Lisa Fiedler is a renowned American writer of historical fiction, young adult, children’s fiction, and fantasy novels. She is particularly famous for writing the Mouseheart Trilogy series and the Gabriel Gale’s Ages of Oz series. Additionally, she has penned several standalone books. Fiedler has also contributed to the series of other authors, including the Poison Apple series, Marry-Kate and Ashley Starring series, and Sabrina, the Teenage Witch series. Two of the most famous novels penned by Fiedler are the retelling of Shakespearean stories, called Romeo’s Ex and Dating Hamlet. She has written both these books from the point of view of the female lead.
Author Fiedler spends most of her time writing novels for young adults and children. She has two homes, one each in Rhode Island and Connecticut. Fiedler divides her time between her two residences. Her happy family is comprised of her loving and patient husband, their beloved and beautiful daughter, and a couple of lovely golden retrievers. As a writer, Fiedler is interested in writing for both young readers and teens. She finds it quite easy to switch between the two genres. The typical approach that she follows while writing any novel is finding the character first and then deciding what the characters need to say. It is followed by throwing the characters into the plot and working out the way as the story proceeds further.
The main difference in her stories is in the way she treats the humor for different genres. Fiedler likes to think that she is extremely funny when she tries to be. Writing humor for kids and teens really tests her expertise. Fiedler finds it a little more challenging to write for teens because she feels that teens straddle two worlds. Previously, Fiedler never used to make an outline of a story, but she has started to do it now. Mostly, she writes from her office. It is one place that she always wants to be. Her desk inspires her to come up with exciting new stories every now and then. Usually, she uses her mornings to write as she believes it is the best time of the day to bring out something creative.
A habit that Fiedler usually follows while writing her stories is listening to music. She is a big fan of old music. While writing Mouseheart, Fiedler had the support of her imaginative and wise editor named Ruta Rimas. Her support helped her to explore new themes, characters, and settings. Rimas and Fiedler worked closely while creating all the three novels of the series. Fiedler likes to give the credit of setting her story around a rat to Ruta Rimas as she was the one who came up with the idea and helped her in describing the setting.
When Fiedler was small, her mother used to read out to her. It helped her to develop an interest in reading from a very young age. It was in the third grade that she came across Harriet The Spy and became a fan of the book. Later, she discovered Edward Eager’s magic-themed novels and loved them as well. The Knight’s Castle was her most favorite. During her teenage years, Fiedler started reading the works of S.E. Hinton and Judy Blume. They motivated her to take up writing her own stories and made her determined to make a career in the field of writing and publishing.
A fantastic novel series written by author Lisa Fiedler is known as the Mouseheart series. It features the central characters in the roles of Hopper, Felina, Zucker, Firren, Ace, Pinkie, Pup, and several others. All these characters are depicted in the form of rats and cats. Fiedler has set this animal adventure series in Brooklyn. She has depicted a glorious utopian civilization of rats called Atlantia, located below Brooklyn’s bustling streets. Hopper is introduced at the beginning of the adventure series as an ordinary mouse. The debut book of this series is entitled ‘Mouseheart’. It was released by Margaret K. McElderry’s publication in 2014. Initially, it is depicted that Hopper is an ordinary mouse, who escapes from the pet shop where he was held captive. Shortly after, he finds himself running through the deep untamed tangles of the transit tunnels located below the city’s bustling cities.
Hopper takes a sigh of relief only after reaching his glorious utopian civilization of Atlantia. After arriving in Atlantia, Hopper realizes that nothing is what it appears to be. In spite of receiving a royal treatment, he longs to meet his siblings, who were lost during the escape attempt. Also, there is a constant threat from the rebels, who seem to be adamant in destroying the entire city. Another thing that bothers Hopper very much is the presence of cats everywhere in civilization. However, it makes him wonder as to why the cats do not cause any harm to any of the citizens of Atlantia. Later, Hopper finds himself caught in the middle of a colossal fight that crosses species and generations. With the raging of the clashes, extraordinary, deadly, and terrible secrets are revealed about Atlantia. When Hopper learns about the painful secrets related to his friends and his civilization, he feels saddened. He wonders what he can to safeguard his civilization and ensure the safety of his people in such a difficult time.
The second installment of this series is known as ‘Hopper’s Destiny’. It was also published in 2015 by the Margaret K McElderry publication. This novel opens by mentioning that Hopper has come to know that he is not just an ordinary mouse from a pet shop. After the destruction of most of the Atlantia civilization and the dethronement of Titus, Hopper joins Firren, Zucker, and other Rangers in rebuilding the civilization. He knows that it is extremely difficult to bring back Atlantia on its feet. To make matters worse, it is learned that the evil feral Queen Felina has started recruiting a new set of street cats to cause more trouble. If a peace accord is not put in place soon, it will result in the killing of many innocent rats at the hands of the street cats. On the other hand, the siblings of Hopper are busy in their own quests. Pinkie has begun a coup, while Pup seems to have lost his innocence, making Hopper worried about him. As Hopper gets the support of a few new allies that include a funny cat called Ace, he wonders if he can ensure the safety of the tunnels and fulfilled an unimagined destiny.
