Early and Personal Life
Lisa Kleypas was always a keen reader with a strong interest mainly in the romance fiction genre. After graduating from Wellesley College with a degree in political science, she decided she wanted to take up writing with the help of her supportive parents.
It didn’t take her long to get published though as, at the age of 21, she brought out her first novel after just two months. During this time she was also named ‘Miss Massachusetts’ by the Miss America beauty pageant, which she won with a song she wrote herself. Originally she was more focused on historical romance novels, but this was to change during a 1998 flood of her Texas home.
In this flood both her and her mother ended up buying some romance novels to ease the transition and stress. It was then because of this in 2006 that she decided to turn towards and focus on the romance genre. She still intends to go back to historical romance in the near future.
For the time being though she is happy having reached the top of the bestseller lists on numerous occasion, with a number of awards to her name as well. Currently she resides in Washington with her two children and her husband.
Writing Career
From an early age Lisa Kleypas always had an interest in writing, but it wasn’t until after her graduation in 1987 that this dream became a reality, with the publication of her first novel ‘Where Passion Leads’. After that there was no turning back and she quickly followed this book up with the next novel in the series ‘Forever My Love’ in 1988.
These were to become a part of her initial ‘Berkley-Faulkner’ series of novels. In 1992 she followed up with the ‘Only Vallerand’ collection, after which she wrote six other series. It was then in 1998 that she had the revelation following a flood of her home, whereby she took up the decision to write solely romance fiction instead of historical romance.
Although she made the announcement in 2006 that she’d be focusing upon this genre, she does have plans to return to historical fiction in the near future. The year of 1998 saw her gain her first award for best sales growth with the ‘Waldenbooks Award’. After this she has had over eleven other awards during the preceding years as she continues to build upon her name and reputation.
In 2012 she saw a film adaptation of her work with the TV movie ‘Christmas With Holly’, taken from the 2010 novel ‘Christmas at Friday Harbor’. From this she continues to go from strength-to-strength, as her reputation as a romantic author grows. Much more is expected from Lisa Kleypas in the future as she builds upon her career and ever increasing popularity.
Midnight Angel
The first in the Stokehurst series that Lisa Kleypas brought out in 1995, this was to be one of two historically themed novels concerning the exploits of the Stokehurst family. This one sees the protagonist, a one Lord Lucas Stokehurst, captivated by the mesmerizing ‘Miss Karen Billings’ with her regal beauty and gentle grace.
It is then that he takes the opportunity of bringing her into his home as he looks to have her path cross with his. As a widower himself, he quickly places her as a governess for his young daughter. With an air of mystery surrounding her though, nobody is entirely sure who she is or exactly where she came from, as she finds herself in the home and the lives of the lord and his daughter.
Her name isn’t her true one though, and she has a somewhat criminal past that she can’t remember after being put to the gallows. Escaping she’s trying to put it all behind her, but it seems that it’s all catching up as she seeks shelter with the lord. It is now up to him to provide her with the sanctuary that she needs, whilst defying time honored conventions and traditions just to be with her.
Fighting off vengeful forces, they must both struggle to maintain their true love in the hope of starting afresh once more. Can they ever put the past behind them and be happy once again starting from scratch? Will the past overcome and drag them back to where they were before? What are the secrets they hold and what is the crime that she supposedly committed in her troubled past?
Mine Till Midnight
This marks the first novel in ‘The Hathaways’ series, a collection of five novels in total from Lisa Kleypas with her typical genre of historically themed romance. Regarding the Hathaways, a family who are suddenly elevated into the ranks of aristocracy thanks to a large inheritance, Kleypas introduces the novel’s heroine in the form of Amelia Hathaway.
Before it seemed to be a lot easier when she was simply tending to her siblings needs. Now she must deal with this fortune, which has placed a weight upon their shoulders. Not only has she been thrust into the upper echelons of society, she also finds that she’s attracted to one Cam Rohan, a tall, dark and handsome stranger.
Following this they are both immediately consumed with their desire for one another. Whilst he’s wealthy beyond belief, Cam wants to give it all up and return to his roots becoming a gypsy once again, where life is seemingly simpler and easier.
When Amelia comes to him for his assistance he initially intends to simply help her out and be on his way, but then they both get caught up in one another as they struggle with their desires.
Will he ever consider marriage, despite his dreams of the simple life? Can they overcome the trials and tribulations of upper-class society as they come together? What will become of their relationship within the eyes and judgement of those around them?
