Lisa Schroeder is an author of young adult and children’s novels best known for the “Its Raining Cupcakes” series and the “Charmed Life” series. While she attended elementary school in Salem, she loved going to the Salem Public Library where she would devour all manner of books. She would then go to Lebanon Union High School and then proceeded to study Business Administration at Oregon State University. Once she got her degree, she worked in human resources for several years before she quit to become a full-time author. She has been writing since she was a girl and she wrote and illustrated a short story named “The Lion’s Valentine” that her grandmother gave back to her more than 3 decades later. However, she did start writing seriously in 2003 and by 2005 she had sold her first picture book. However, it took a lot of rejections before she sold her first novel in 2007. She had always wanted to become an author ever since she was a child that spent all her time at the library. Books allowed her to make new friends, visit new places and feel less alone even when she was having a hard time. She wanted to write novels that connect teens and kids and have the novels do things for them that they have done for her throughout her life.

When she is not working on her novels, she has a lot of hobbies. A lot of the time you will find her walking the neighborhood listening to podcasts or music, traveling, reading, watching movies and baking yummy things. She has traveled all across North America and took a trip to Paris in 2017. Her favorite band is “Lifehouse” though she also listens to the likes of James Bay and Matt Nathanson. She has asserted that she cannot imagine living without music as she finds it inspirational, especially when she needs to write. Her favorite movie is “The Sound of Music.” She currently lives on the outskirts of Portland Oregon. While she loves living in Oregon given its green beauty she does sometimes get tired of the February rains and just wants the sun to come out. She is married and has two kids.

Lisa Schroeder writes some of the best young adult and children’s novels with unbelievable storylines and fantastic characterization. While many children’s and young adult books tend to have a lot of fluff, she manages to make all her novels full of realism and lessons for her audience. She did start out with single standing novels when she punished her first novel “I Heart You, You Haunt Me” in 2008 but now has two series to her name. She started writing the popular “Its Raining Cupcakes” in 2010 and started work on the “Charmed Life” Series in 2014. She writes novels for kids and teens in a very realistic way that tells stories that show how to deal with family issues. Her characters are not dealing with death, divorce or anything drastic but just normal family issues that preteens and teens go through in life. They are realistic situations that call for the child to stand up for some value, be there for a friend or make a sacrifice. For instance, she mixes things up with moral dilemmas such as when Sophie in “Sprinkles and Secrets” has to decide whether to follow her dream of becoming a model when the commercial is likely going to put her best friend’s family out of business. It is not only about the moral dilemmas as Schroeder also throws in cooking recipes, some book club and musical action for the characters. All in all they are enjoyable novels for middle-grade girls as they are relatable and easy to read with a lot of real-life lessons and fun. Overall her characters face some difficult decisions and then learn from their mistakes which helps them grow. While they are not flawless and make mistakes, they eventually make things right.

“Its Raining Cupcakes” is the first novel of the Its Raining Cupcakes trilogy that was Lisa Schroeder’s first attempt at a series. It is a thoughtful and fun mother-daughter narrative that tells of accepting responsibility, growing up and finding a way to make one’s aspirations come true. Isabel’s family is set on starting a cupcake business in Willow Oregon, and she has to help them get the business up and running though she feels trapped in the town. Her mother has little spirit and is ready to give up when she learns that a popular cake shop franchise is planning to set up in town. Isabel needs to stay more than ever as without her support, her mother will easily surrender her dream. But by staying, she may just be endangering her dream of traveling away from the small town of willow and entering a baking contest. It does not help that Sophie her best friend seems to be exceptional at almost everything she does and is also interested in going for the baking contest. One of the best lessons from the novel is the fact that Isabel and her mother come to the realization that considering each other feelings is critical, even as they fight not to give up on dreams that each of them has. They realize that they can face up to their problems as a team as long as they are open with each other.

“Sprinkles and Secrets” the second novel of the Its Raining Cup Cakes series is the story of 12-year-old Sophie, who lives with her little brother and parents in Willow Oregon. Isabel her best friend has always been the best at baking and her family just opened the local cake shop “Its Raining Cupcakes.” Sophie’s many talents could take her places including the likes of Hollywood or Broadway. She gets her break when a counselor from the theater camp she attended calls her with news that a talent agency just signed her up. In fact, they have already organized an audition for her on an upcoming local television commercial. But she is not so thrilled when she learns that she will be auditioning for a “Beatrice’s Brownies” commercial, which is the biggest competition for “Its Raining Cupcakes.” She has a huge dilemma on her hands – should she take the opportunity to further her career and hope another comes along or go ahead and grab it and risk ruining her relationship with Isabel. It a great story about friendship, forgiveness, and honesty among friends. Sophie manages to come up with an amazing solution that shows that friends can always find a way to work things out.

“Frosting and Friendship” the third novel of the Its Raining Cupcakes series is about Lily Hubbard a twelve-year-old that cannot bake to save her life. Her cakes tend to lean, her cookies are salty and everything else is overcooked. When she is invited to join “The Baking Bookworms,” a mother-daughter book club she is terrified yet at the same time excited. It would seem that she is the only one that cannot bake in her family. But she is very good with music and is now forming a band to audition for “Spring Fling” the school annual event. Lily now needs to balance her priorities given that Isabel one of her best friends from the Baking Bookworms needs her help in planning a surprise party for Sophie a mutual friend. They need to make a mouthwatering, show-stopping thirteenth birthday cake for their friend. Lily is soon knee-deep in sheet music and sugar as she juggles arranging the party of the year and her responsibility to her bandmates.
