Liz Tolsma is a christian and historical fiction author that loves to say that is passionate about her writing, about God and about her family. She published her debut novel in 2011 and is glad that she gets to work her dream job every day.
There is nothing she loves better than sitting in her comfortable office chair and letting her imagination run wild. Tolsma is also very much involved in the writing community and often helps aspiring authors hone their writing skills and embark on the journey to publishing.
The reason she so loves her family perhaps has to do with the fact that she married her high school sweetheart and together they have three beautiful children that they adopted.
Brian their eldest was adopted from Vietnam as a five month old, Allyssa the youngest came from South Korea as a three month old, while Jonalyn their eldest was adopted from the Philippines as a five year old. They all live together as one big family in rural Wisconsin.
Tolsma made her writing debut with the award winning “Snow on the Tulips” that she published in 2013. She has also had some of her work published in the “Rails to Love Collection.”
Liz has also spoken on different stages on a variety of topics such as living with courage, writing, adoption, family and marriage. She is the owner and editor of “Write Direction Editing,” where she watches and mentors clients growing in their writing.
She has spent much of her life in Wisconsin, where she still lives with her husband and children in a house right next to a farm field. Her son is a US marine while her two daughters are still in high school. When Tolsma is not writing her novels she can be found camping, reading, kayaking, walking, and working in her garden.
Liz Tolsma is a staunch Christian and she does not remember a time when she was not in love with Jesus. She grew up in a Christian home and learned about the religion from a very young age.
She has said that through her life or writing, she hopes that she can touch people so that they can come to know the bounty and richness of God’s mercy and love. Tolsma loves to think that her Christian life is woven into how her characters speak, think and act.
Tolsma usually shows in the character struggles that challenges are part of the Christian walk even as she shows that sin is the foremost cause of pain in the world. One of the most common themes in her writing is the sovereignty of God, which she comes back to again and again.
She usually asserts that the best way to live in the world is to trust fully and place your hope in the perfect plan of God.
As for why she loves writing, she has said it is because she has too many stories in her head wanting to be told that she gets the drive to put them on paper. She is usually surprised when the novels she writes end up becoming bestsellers.
“Snow on the Tulips” by Liz Tolsma is a novel set in a time of unprecedented fear and darkness. The lead is a woman named Cornelia that is at a crossroads as she has to decide if risking her own life to save a stranger is worth it.
The Nazi occupation of Holland is in its twilight years but the occupiers have taken everything she held precious. But then Gerrit Laninga, a man that has a deep sense of patriotism and is also very religious, asks for her help.
Just like everyone, she is terrified of the Nazis but most of all she does not want to imagine the pain she would feel if she fell in love with Gerrit and lost him. He is one of the foremost members of the Dutch Resistance and has been on the Nazi most wanted list for months.
When he comes to her house asking for shelter, she finds him kind and strong and is drawn to him. But she refuses to contact the local resistance on his behalf. Gerrit is determined to continue with the resistance even if it puts Cornelia and her family in danger.
Things get interesting when his plan goes awry and he has to depend on her to save his life. She will need to learn to depend on love and summon enough courage to protect the man she has come to love deeply.
Will their love get a chance to bloom or will her new love be snatched away before then?
Liz Tolsma’s “Daisies are Forever” is the story of Gisela, a woman who holds on to love and hope despite the odds against her living in a country ravaged by war. She is an American that was living with Ella Reinhardt, her cousin in eastern Germany when the Russians invaded.
They can find safety in Berlin but Ella, who is a nurse, refuses to leave and asks Gisela to take her two young daughters with her.
On the journey to Berlin, she stumbles into an escaped British prisoner of war Mitch Edwards. To protect the man, she pretends to be his wife as the Germans are very suspicious about his identity.
But then Kurt, a German soldier who is the most suspicious, starts developing feelings for Gisela and tries to find the truth. The characters come to realize that some things are forever even if destruction is all around.
“Remember the Lilies” by Liz Tolsma is the story of Rand and Irene who need to find common ground to survive despite coming from two very different walks of life. Irene grew up with her aunt Anita and spent much of her childhood in the jungle working as a missionary.
But she now finds herself alongside hundreds others at Santo Tomas in the Philippines, where they are the prisoners of the Japanese.
They are safe at the internment camp and together with her aunt, they are kept busy delivering censored messages to the prisoners of war. While she has it easier, Irene prays that the war will end so that she can have her life back.
On the other hand is Rand, a rich American playboy whose attempts to escape from the prison camp has put his life and those of other prisoners in jeopardy. When Aunt Anita and Rand meet at the hospital, he tells them more of his story and she is so taken by it and him that she is set on saving his family.
But outside the hospital, the danger only worsens even as life inside could not be any worse. Will Irene be able to find his family before they are lost to him forever. Will they be able to find common ground so that they can face their common fears together?
