This book features the chief characters in the roles of Celia Scott, Arthur Scott, Eve, Evee, and Daniel. Author Roy has done the setting of this book’s plot in Kansas and Detroit. At the start of the book’s story, it is shown that Celia Scott and Arthur Scott are husband and wife. In the 20 years of their married, everything looked perfect, except for one thing that keeps Celia Scott bothering all the time. Arthur had a sister named Eve and she had died before Arthur met and married Celia. Following the death of Eve, Arthur left his hometown in Kansas and settled in Detroit. There, he came across Celia and married her. He never looked back, discussed anything, or talked about Eve’s death. And Celia Scott has watched Arthur hiding all these years from the secrets surrounding the death of his sister.

Later, the events from the riots of 1967 begin to haunt Arthur Scott more than his own past. A point comes when he decides that he must go back to his hometown and confront the reality of the death of his sister. Arthur convinces his wife to pack up everything and head back to the same road, Bent Road, where he grew up. He thinks that the time has finally come when he must return to the small town in Kansas, where the mysterious death of Eve took place. After coming to his old house, Arthur Scott and his oldest daughter find it easy to get used to to the rural life. But, Celia and her younger children find it very difficult to adjust to the changed surroundings. Arthur and Celia’s son, Daniel, hopes that Kansas will help him turn into a man one day. He also hopes that Kansas doesn’t turn out to be like Detroit even slightly. Eve hopes of growing up in Kansas and living a good life in the rural side. Celia finds herself grappling with brutality of death and life and loneliness on the farm. Some time later, the family learns that a local girl has vanished mysteriously. She earns her living by tending a bar at a local dive and lives on the Fielding Plantation with her parents. But, doesn’t like coming back at all as she feels haunted by her past.

Also, her father’s sinister crimes at the time when he was the director of a notorious boys’ school, make Lane Fielding feel unwelcomed in the town. Her struggles reach to a new height when Annalee disappears suddenly. Ten days before the disappearance of Annalee, a young student had gone missing. These two back to back disappearances indicate that a serial killer, who used to prey upon the damned town some years back, has come back. And when Lane learns from Talley that she has made an unseemly new friend, she begins to find out whether her daughter’s vanishing is linked to the crimes of her father? The worst fear that comes to Lane’s mind in such a testing situation is that she is surrounded by numerous enemies and thinks that returning to the hometown was the worst decision of her life. As reporters get crowded into the town, police search every nook and corner, and circumstances take disturbing turns, the struggles of Lane Fielding of finding her daughter continue to haunt her.
