About Lou Cameron
Creating a powerful legacy within his lifetime, the American novelist and comic-book author Lou Cameron was a highly respected artist and writer. Producing a number of well received works, he had a strong sense-of-humour running throughout his stories, and he was never short of material. With a deep imagination, there was plenty to work with, and he’d always make sure to say something through his novels, infusing much of his own personality within it all.
Over the course of his long and illustrious writing career, he’d also come to use a number of different pen-names as well. These would include Tabor Evans, Ramsay Thorne, Julie Cameron, and Mary Manning, to name just a few of them. With a strong body of work left behind, he was the creator of just over three hundred novels, as his work is still enjoyed to this day.

Early and Personal Life:
Born 1924 in San Francisco, Lou Cameron was born and raised by his vaudeville performer parents, Lou Cameron Sr., and Ruth Marvin Cameron. Interested in comics from a young age, Cameron would illustrate and write, pursuits which would come to define him greatly in the years to follow. Illustrating a number of comics prior to becoming a full-time writer as well, he’d gain a strong appreciation for the form.
Serving during the Second World War, Cameron would spend some time in U.S. Army in their 2nd Armoured Division. This would provide him with a lot of material to work with, as his work was hugely inspired by his own life, despite his focus on genre fiction. Creating a style that was very much his own, his stories would stand-out, as he’d progress from illustration to writing.

Establishing a distinctively muscular style, his work would become easy to identify, being entirely idiosyncratic to him. Putting a lot of himself into his stories too, he’d really pave the way in the field, especially when it came to building pseudonym based brands. His work was packed with action, and he wasn’t afraid to take it forwards in terms of not shying away from violence.

This sense of gritty realism that ran throughout his work would prove to be hugely influential, leaving a strong impact on the literary scene. Whether it be Western or Horror, his work is still respected to this day, with a large number of new up-and-coming writers following in his footsteps. As more and more readers discover his work every day, this will carry on into the foreseeable future for quite some time to come.
Writing Career:
In 1958 Lou Cameron would have one of his first short-stories published, which was titled ‘The Last G.I.’ and it was set in a nuclear apocalypse. This was brought out in the ‘Real War’ magazine at the time, and would feature American soldiers attempting to survive the nuclear fallout. It was gritty and realistic, something which would come to define the work of Cameron over the course of his long and illustrious career.

Prior to this he would illustrate for a variety of different comics, many notably being horror comics, including the ‘Classics Illustrated’ comic-book series. Wry and to-the-point, his work had a strain of cynicism to it, giving it a strong grounded feel that was extremely down to earth. His approach to work showed his extremely versatile nature, as he was able to apply himself to most things, including high-quality art and writing, along with more sensationalist pulp material.

Another facet of Cameron’s writing career was that of his novelizations of films, as he’d adapt many popular Hollywood cinema releases of the time for their official novels. He’d also do the same for a number of television programs at the time too, working alongside the scripts and screenplays. This would also work the other way as well, as there’d be film adaptations of his own novels, including the 2004 release of ‘La Furet’, based on his novel ‘The Subway Stalker’.

Receiving numerous awards over the course of his writing career, he was also not without critical acclaim either. Winning the Golden Spur for his book ‘The Spirit Horses’, many of these awards would be for his Westerns, of which there were plenty. Standing the test of time, he was one of the most prolific authors of his generation, continually working, and always willing to adapt.

Hell Raider
Published through the Piccadilly Publishing label, this would be the ninth in the series of Captain Gringo Western novels. Providing another fast-paced action adventure for its intrepid hero, it really doesn’t hold back on the all out violence. It does follow on from the other stories that came previously, but it can be read on its own as a stand-alone novel.

There are cannibals and piranha waiting for Captain Gringo down deep within the jungles and rivers of Brazil. With a price on his head and only a deadly assignment to take it off, the captain has an almost impossible task ahead of him. Heading into border bandit controlled territory his life is on the line, and he’s going to have to do everything in his power in order to get out alive. What will become of him deep down in Brazil? Who is behind the international conspiracy lying in wait? Will he manage to get out as the Hell Raider?

Angel’s Flight
Whilst this was originally marked down as a crime novel, it focuses on the world of Jazz with plenty of noir undertones. A stand-alone title, it was somewhat of a more serious entry from Lou Cameron, using the lingo of the be-bop movement to create its low-key mood. This proved to be an interesting take on the genre, and would show another side for the highly versatile author.

Ben Parker is a be-bop musician looking to make his way to the top of the game, fighting to make a name for himself. Working up from the smoke filled clubs, it takes place in the world of Jazz, as he has big dreams and huge ambition. Progressing through a seedy underworld, he has to navigate the shadier aspects of the crime ridden nightlife, all while bumping heads with the equally ambitious fellow musician Johnny Angel. Who are the key players in this adventure? Where will their journey take them? To what heights will they all see from Angel’s flight?
