Lucie Brownlee describes herself as an author as well as a semi-professional Geordie. She is a Sunday Times bestseller, an alumna of the Richard & Judy Book Club, and is a self-proclaimed netball legend.
She is interested in writing fiction, memoir and script and teaches at Faber Academy. Lucie is also a creative producer for New Writing North’s school program.
Life After You is a 2014 memoir by Lucie Brownlee. Raw and honest, this is the type of memoir that will stir deep emotions in the reader. It is a powerful recollection of the author’s own life that will have readers engrossed from start to finish, and perhaps reaching for some tissues at times. This is the debut from Lucie Brownlee dealing with the topic that no one likes to talk about and her entry into a very specific club– widowhood.
Lucie was young and she was married, which made the sudden loss of her spouse all the more difficult. Her husband was young as well and they both seemed in good health. She was never going to be emotionally prepared for what happened.
She describes her husband’s passing in great detail, describing how they were together in bed when he ‘crashed on to the pillow next to me, heavy as a felled oak’. Lucie describes how she slapped him and told him to wake up, and her daughter came to the doorway because of all the commotion and was crying and trying to see what was going on inside.
In that moment, Lucie told her the adult lie that everything was all right, even though it wasn’t. It was a crisis and one that she had no way of knowing was on its way. There was no time to process because it was happening right then.
The author comments on how sudden death can be so rude. It can come in and take your husband from you without giving any warning. It often does not have the decency to even knock, it just enters and does what it wants.
They were 37 years old and Lucie could have never predicted that her husband would have simply dropped dead while making love one night. Lucie is now dealing with a new life, one that she never wanted and never chose. It simply presented itself to her. She never thought that this would be the life that she was living and turned to writing as a way to talk about her grief.
The result is this memoir, Life After You. It is an impressive work that will hit home whether you yourself have lost a spouse or whether you have never gone through it. Emotional and heartfelt, this is an honest read that nonfiction fans and memoir fans especially will want to pick up. Check out Life After You by Lucie Brownlee to follow along with every word.
