Lumberjanes Series

The cartoonists’ Noelle Stevenson, Faith Erin Hicks and Kat Leyh, along with writers’ Grace Ellis, Shannon Watters, have been working together for quite some time now. American artists, they complement each others styles, creating work alongside one another, whilst also getting the best out of each other. This has lead to some of the most iconic and enduring comic-book series that are currently being published to date. Not only that, but they also manage to bring each of their own idiosyncratic personalities into their work, whilst also winning awards at the same time. Combining action and fantasy, they manage to draw in readers from all over the world looking to find something new, fresh and exciting. Working in animation too, they’re no strangers to creating vibrant, colorful and flashy visuals that immediately grab the readers’ attention too. Writing for television as well, many of them have worked across a variety of different mediums, finding their different voices and styles. This has worked to great effect, especially when it comes to creating their own comic-book series, with their own characters and arcs. A long-running comic book series that showcases their talent extremely well is that of their Lumberjanes collection of books. Combining action and fantasy, it is a fun and engaging series of books, each with their own unique adventures and stories. Set in a summer Scout camp, it sees a group of girls spend the summer there, as they deal with a number of mysteries, many of a supernatural nature. The characters featured are Molly, Ripley, Jo, Mal and April, as they all form lasting bonds and friendships over the course of the books. Winning awards, it’s a series that is highly accessible to all ages, with its female centric set of characters and writing, making it something new and interesting in the world of comic-books.

With a total of fifty-three books in total so far and counting, this is a series that has the potential to run on indefinitely. Starting out in 2014 it has come a long way in a relatively short amount of time, with plenty of writers and artists contributing to the many stories over its entire duration. There are also collected editions, including the omnibus volumes, of which there are ten so far, along with the ‘Lumberjanes To The Max’ bumper editions collating each of the volumes, totalling four volumes so far. All of this has lead to a strong following, with scores of readers worldwide awaiting each subsequent release with eagerness and anticipation.

Beware of the Kitten Holy

Originally published through the ‘BOOM! Box’ imprint, this was the first omnibus edition of the Lumberjacks series. Collecting together the first four issues of the series, it managed to introduce its readers to its vastly inventive world for the first time. Released on the 7th of April in 2015, it really makes the most of its subject matter, taking the readers on a complete journey throughout.

Dealing with all the themes typically found within the young coming-of-age arc, these stories find themselves looking at the trials and tribulations of growing up. They manage this with a sense-of-humour and wit quite unlike any other as well, along with having a lot of surreal fun along the way. Set in the American wilderness, it really makes the most of its location too, really giving a feel for the world of the ‘Hardcore-Lady Types’ summer camp. This sees the camp almost becoming a character in of itself, as it manages to come to life off of the page for the reader. The protagonists also feel extremely well developed, as they definitely manage to come alive too, each with their own distinctive personality.

Taking place at none other than Miss Qiunzilla Thiskwin Penniquiqul Thistle Crumpets’ summer camp for girls of a sturdier disposition, not everything is entirely as it seems. With a whole variety of different surreal events underway, it would appear that many mysteries are currently befalling the camp. Featuring anagrams, three-eyed foxes and secret caves, it would appear that there’s a whole host of mysteries for the girls to uncover. Looking to make the most of their summer, the girls aim to really get involved in the summer camp and all the supernatural shenanigans that it has to solve. Will they be able to uncover it all? What mysteries will befall them? Can they cope when they’re told to beware of Kitten Holy?

Friendship to the Max

Released in 2015 on the 13th of October this time, this would follow on from the last title, creating the next step in the Lumberjanes series. Published through the ‘BOOM! Box’ publishing house once more, it collects the next four issues of five through to eight. This sees it maintaining its original momentum, giving the readers more of what they’ve now come to expect from the series overall.

Taking a look at getting older, this continues to examine the girls friendships and how they cope with the world around them. This is done with a sense of fun once more too, whilst giving them a whole host of exciting and inventive storylines and mysteries to solve too. Once again bringing the setting of the Hardcore Lady-Types summer camp to the forefront, it manages to develop its world even further than before. Along with this, it also manages to create a highly creative juxtaposition between the American wilderness and the more fantastical elements that await the characters themselves. The characters are also developed further once more, taking an even more insightful look into who they are, allowing the reader to feel as if they really know each of them by the end.

Heading to the Hardcore-Lady Types summer camp once again, the girls will this time find a whole host of new adventures to contend with. Featuring Mal, April, Jo, Ripley and Molly, they’re faced with all manner of monsters, magic and friendship bracelets, as the bond between them continues to grow. Dealing with raptors and sibling rivalries, they’re going to be tested to the full extent of their talents this time round. Not only that, but they’re going to have to cope with a variety of different mysteries too, keeping their wits about them throughout. Will they manage to deal with it all? Can they uncover all the mysteries again? What happens when they test their friendship to the max?

The Lumberjanes Series

As a series this really excels in female oriented storytelling for young women, whilst creating something entirely new all of its own in the process. Focusing on them and how they solve mysteries over the course of the series, it really allows the characters to come alive as the arcs progress. With future film adaptations in the pipeline it’s easy to see why this has become such a popular series, with plenty more titles set to follow. Not only that, but it’s a series that open to everyone, regardless of who they are or where they’re from, all due to its large degree of accessibility.
