Lydia Kang is an American published author of fiction.
She attended Columbia University as well as New York University School of Medicine. She would go on to work a residency and a chief residency, completing both in New York City at Bellevue Hospital. Now she is not just a writer but a practicing physician. One of her passions is helping other writers to go for medical accuracy when it comes to their fiction.
She has had her work published in a variety of places from JAMA to the Canadian Medical Association Journal to Great Weather for Media, among others. The author’s first published novel came out in 2013 with the release of Control, her first in a fictional series by the same name. It would be followed by a sequel titled Catalyst.
The author is a big believer in science but also believes in knocking on wood. She loves salt and would choose it over chocolate. She describes herself as a full-time family member and is married. She has three children with her husband and they reside in Omaha. She describes herself as being like an ant in that she may be small but she is very strong. She is willing to be a lifelong friend of anyone that offers her snacks.
Lydia Kang is the creator and the author of the Control series. The first novel in this series carries the same name and made its debut in 2013. The second book Catalyst would be published two years later in 2015. This is an engaging youth fantasy series that can be enjoyed by anyone and the twists and turns keep on coming in this science fiction and fantasy blend! James Dashner, author of the popular book The Maze Runner, states that it blew him away and all of the twists made it ‘a thrilling ride’. If you are a fan of Maze Runner or Uglies, be sure to check this series out for yourself.
Control is the first novel in the series by the same name. This is a science fiction laced foray into a unique world set in the future that will have readers turning the page wanting more!
The year is 2150, and a lot has changed from the past. This is a world where so much is possible. Cars are automatic, people can go out to the nightclubs and experience a wild night thanks to such party supplements as auditory ecstasy, and if you’re walking on the street the odds are good that you might run into a man sporting four arms instead of two.
Society has changed quite a bit as well. There are humans with genetic alterations that are seen as mistakes, and much of society wants to simply forget that they ever existed. But can those who exist forced into the margins of society find their way into being not freaks but heroes?
In this story, readers get to meet the main character of Zel. She may not have always gotten along perfectly with her overprotective father, but at least he was there. Then a horrible crash means that her father’s life is gone in an instant thanks to the accident. But it’s not just Zel that loses a parent. Dylia, her little sister, has lost him as well.
The two struggle to cope with their new status as orphans and try to handle their new sense of grief. The sadness and adjusting to it all threatens to overwhelm them. Zel knows that she has to look out for Dylia and be the protector in her life. Dyl deserves that from her, and Zel is working hard and thinking, trying to come up with a plan to help them both.
The last thing that she anticipates is strangers showing up and taking her sister. The people have sensory weapons that they never saw coming. Just like that, Zel has gone from losing her father permanently to losing her sister too. Any trace of the life that they once shared is now totally gone. Now Zel is sent to a safe house meant for teens without her sister.
The house is unusual, not for the residence but for the people inside of it. The teenagers that live there are not similar to any teens that she’s seen before. According to law they should not even technically exist, but they do. They also seem to have unusual gifts. One is an angry young man that’s been through a lot and has the potential to help her get back to her sister and be reunited once more.
With the help of technology, their gifts, and this new friend, Zel might be able to retrieve her sister from her kidnappers. They’ll be slow to give her up on their own, however, since they believe that Dyl’s DNA might hide a secret encoded in it. Can Zel achieve the seemingly impossible feat of getting her sister back? Read this compelling novel to find out!
Catalyst is the compelling second novel in the Control series by author Lydia Kang. This complex story will have you reading all the way through as you race to find out what happens in the end.
What does it mean to be a person in the future? It depends on who you ask. For Zel, she’s lost everything familiar in the course of a year. The future seems doubtful, and her safety and a boy she’s fallen for, as well as her father, are all gone.
She did manage to reunite with her sister, and they’ve come to bond with a group of genetic outcasts and become very close. They all must make a run for it when neural gun-wielding men show up at their safe house. They decide their best shot is to try and get to Chicago to find safe haven.
But when Zel thinks she hears Cy’s whisper, it starts to get in her head. She goes off course to look for him, but may be surprised at what she finds. It turns out as well that their mutations may be more than they think and gives them doubts about ever being accepted by the world. What will happen? Read this book to find out!
