Lyn Andrews
Lyn Andrews was born in September of 1943, and is the pseudonym of novelist Lynda M. Andrews. She was born and raised in the Liverpool suburb of Fazakerley. She’s the daughter of a cop and a hairdresser. Her dad died on D-Day when Lyn was just 9 months old. When she was 3 her mom married Frank Moore, who became Lyn’s dad.

She went to the Convent of Notre Dame at Everton Valley where she didn’t excel at English yet had a passion for literature and history, eventually earning 5 O-levels.

Then she trained as a short hand typist at a well rated commercial college in Colquitt Street. After she graduated she became a secretary at the Lily Cups company in Aintree and married Robert (a policeman from Fazakerley). At the time that she was living in Fazakerley, she never did any writing nor did she want to be a writer.

Lyn quit her job after about three years at Lily Cups once she got pregnant. Giving birth to triplets, two sons (Keith and Paul) and a daughter (Helen), she raised her family and began publishing novels.

She was shortlisted for the Romantic Novel of the Year Award in 1993. She is one of the top 100 bestselling authors in all of the UK, hitting Number 1 on the Sunday Times paperback bestseller list, and is a popular novelist in the North of England.

“The White Empress” is the first stand alone novel and was released in 1989. Cat Cleary was a sixteen year old Irish ‘slummy’, filled with hope. She’d arrived in Liverpool to seek and make her fortune, and be somebody in this world.

Joe Calligan, who is the young steam-packet deckhand that had stopped her from going overboard, didn’t have the heart to tell her that Liverpool was filled with people tramping the streets looking for work. But he believed she was the loveliest girl that he had ever seen, and could not bear to see her get crushed into the life of the Liverpool slums.

Then Cat saw the White Empress, the gigantic luxury liner all set to sail across the oceans, and from then on her ambition was born, to be Chief Stewardess on the world’s great liner. In spite of her lack of education, her poverty, her family background, Cat set out to realize her incredible dream.

“The Sisters O’Donnell” is the second stand alone novel and was released in 1990. New lives. New start. New troubles.

Throughout County Tipperary the three sisters were known as the Sisters O’Donnell. They each have red hair, but had very little else in common. Together they move to Liverpool during the 1920s in order to make a new life for themselves, even though each of the sisters intends to go about it in their own way. Mary-Kate wants to find herself a husband, Gina wants to be a star of the theater, and Bridget (gentle and shy) only wants to escape from the troubles.

However once they get to Liverpool they realize that fortune and fame are just as thin on the ground as is work. Their money’s running out rather quickly. These sisters have got a long way to go before they fulfill their dreams. Are the bonds of sisterhood going to be enough to hold them together?

“Liverpool Lou” is the third stand alone novel and was released in 1991. Is she going to find the happiness she deserves?

This is an engrossing Merseyside saga that spans two world wars, and follows a young woman as she attempts to make her own way in the world, despite her aunt’s determination to control her.

Babsey has always worked hard in order to provide for her family; she runs a greengrocers publicly and a money lending business in private. She makes sure that her family doesn’t mix with some of the rougher people in the neighborhood, considering herself to be a cut above the local community. Once Louisa (her niece) needs a home, because her mom’s dead and her dad’s at sea, Babsey does her duty and brings the girl into her home.

However Louisa simply doesn’t fit in with Babsey’s plans. Life under Aunt Babsey’s roof is comfortable, Louisa is acutely aware of all the desperate poverty surrounding her. And, while growing up into a thoughtful young woman, the harsh realities of betrayal and love, death and war, make her determined to find her own way.

Louisa is eventually going to made famous throughout her city, known forever as Liverpool Lou. And she may find love along the way.

This is a brilliant story that had readers in tears. It’s exactly what you would expect from Lyn Andrews: full of lifelike characters and good background information.

“Ellan Vannin” is the fourth stand alone novel and was released in 1991. An orphaned kid faces hardship, yet will not give up until happiness is in her grasp.

“Ellan Vannin” is an unforgettable story about a young woman that falls in love, despite having lost and loved already. Life’s not easy for the widowed George Vannin and his young daughter, yet somehow George has raised the kid all alone and Ellan adores her dad.

Ellan is just ten years old once the shaft at Foxdale Mine collapses, and her dad never comes back up. From then on she lives with her Aunt Maud, who is a dour woman with a quick temper. Her husband died in a mining accident as well, and she never forgave the family up at the Big House for their part in this tragedy.

Once Ellan gets offered a chance to better herself at the Big House, Aunt Maud savagely forbids it. Ellan’s opportunity is yet to come still, however she’s got a long way to go before she can find the happiness that she deserves.

This is a lovely story. You truly share in Ellan’s ups and downs throughout her life feeling as though you were right there with her. It kept readers’ attention even though the story is a light one. These characters seem so real that it is tough to believe this is fiction.
