Lynn Painter
One of Lynn Painter’s claims to fame is being able to cram a whole cupcake in her open mouth. A dubious skill, for sure, but one she is proud of. She’s quirky, fun, and highly energetic. These traits are an asset in her writing because they color and influence her work and makes it enjoyable for all of us.
Better Than the Movies is Ms. Painter’s first offering to those who love the Chick-Lit genre for YA and adults.
Liz Buxbaum is your average high school senior. She has girlfriends, boy problems, a dad who really tries but really kinda fails, and her childhood crush has recently moved back to town. Sadly, Liz isn’t average in one very important way. Her mom passed away when she was young.
Mom was a rom-com writer; happily-ever-after and hopeless romance is in Liz’s genes. Liz and her mom would cuddle up with snacks and watch Bridgette Jone’s Diary and other fun romance movies while mom would dish out advice for her future like “never, ever go for the bad boys”. But Mom is gone now and she’s on her own and so confused. She never dreamed her mom won’t be there for dress shopping for the prom, helping her with her hair, taking her picture, and waiting up for her. Liz is determined to try to be normal and make the best of it.
Prom is coming and Liz has made a deal with Wes, her tormenting devil-of-the-boy next door, to get her invited to the party where her crush is going to be. If she could just get in front of Michael she knew she could get him to invite her to the prom.
Ms. Painter brings us another riotous YA Rom-Com with The Do-Over. Emile Hornby is spending Valentine’s Day, self-soothing with a quart of Ben & Jerry’s, chocolate, of course. The whole day was a dump including losing a much needed scholarship, hearing her parents are splitting up, and she totally caught her boyfriend cheating on her. On Valentine’s Day! Self-soothing with with consolation ice cream was all she could do. So she goes to bed feeling horrible about her life.
When Emile wakes up in the morning she’s not sick from chocolate and it’s Valentine’s Day all over again. It’s like that dumb movie, she’s watching Josh cheat on her again day after day.
After four days of this stupidity, she decides what the heck. Today is the Day of No Consequences (DONC). She’s going to, for once, please herself and let it fly because what the heck, tomorrow she can start all over.
Emile goes crazy and lets her crazy impulses lead the way! She takes her dad’s Porsche for a joyride and gets it impounded, she tells her creepy boss what a nasty-mouth jerk he is, she gets a tattoo that says JOSH SUCKS, she gets into a crazy make-out session with her lab-partner in his truck.
The next morning she wakes up with fuzzy memories of her DONC. To her horror, Emile realizes her DONC was not without consequences. The universe has ended her predictable repetition of Valentine’s Day and she wakes to the horror of finding out now she’s in deep trouble. She’s having to answer some serious consequences for her frolic of DONC.
A fun Rom-Com for the adult fans of Ms. Painter’s writing is Mr. Wrong Number. Olivia sets her bar high this time by burning her dumper of an ex-boyfriend’s letters while chugging wine and burns down her apartment building. Intending to leave town with her life savings in cash, she hadn’t put in a new bank, now smoldering along with all her other possessions, she’s forced to move back in with family. They already thought she was a huge screwup and of course now, they’ve been vindicated.
A random misdial gets her a pervert. Texting back and forth, amping up the sexy innuendos, gets Olivia curious about the wrong-number-guy. She has no idea she already know this guy!
Another decidedly adult offering is THE LOVE WAGER. Spoiler Alert: Hallie and Jack get a lot of tacos together. This after she literally crawls away from his apartment, changes everything in her life including her apartment, her hair, her job, and her attitude. She signs up on a new dating app and guess who pops up first. Yeah. You can run but evidently, even if you try your best, you can’t hide from your worst nightmare.
Lynn Painter lives in Omaha, Nebraska and writes YA and Adult romantic comedies. Besides her novel pursuits, she is a contributor to the Omaha World-Herald. She lives with her pack of “wild-children” and her husband. She chugs energy-drinks, reads, writes, and of course, watches a pile of rom-coms.
