Extra Yarn
In ExtraYarn, the readers are introduced to Anabelle, a girl who lives in an extremely cold and colorless world. In the cold town, everything is covered with soot and snow. One fine day, Anabelle comes across a box of colorful yarn and decides to knit a sweater. When Annabelle finished knitting the sweater, she began knitting one for her dog as well. In fact, Annabelle’s extremely colorful yarn does not appear to be ending anytime soon. Thus, Anabelle decides to knit and knit, until everyone in the town has a sweater for the cold season. Later on, the archduke decides to offer Annabelle ten million dollars in exchange for her box of yarn. However, Annabelle declines the offer and thus, he resorts to other measures. The archduke hires a team of robbers to break into Annabelle’s house and steal the box for him.
The robbers are successful with the raid and take the box of yarn to the archduke. However, once he had the box of yarn in his hands, things do not go as he had expected. What is the archduke going to do next, because things have not gone as he had hoped them to? Extra Yarn is a book about staying real to one’s belief and not letting people bring you down. The art has been brilliantly done while the message has been expertly delivered. Furthermore, this is a story about what may happen, when a person makes up their minds about effecting positive changes. Extra Yarn is a narrative about the positive influence of one person irrespective of the position, age and experience especially when they set their heart and minds to a specific cause. In the book, the readers will get to see what happens to the people, who may try to harm people whose intentions are pure and good. It is a narrative of how the good that one does and eventually how it comes back to them in ways that they never expected.
Author Barnett’s simple text conjures a narrative that is not only, thought-provoking but also meaningful as well. Annabelle’s tale will undeniably compel the readers to mainly think about what they can do to ensure that they make the world a much better place. Teachers and students are going to definitely have a lot to discuss after the end of Extra Yarn. The illustrations in Extra Yarn were done by Jon Klassen and undeniably bring the book to life. The one-dimension illustrations brilliantly reveal the gloominess of Annabel’s life.
Sam and Dave Dig-A-Hole
Klassen and Mac Barnett have once again delivered another incredible picture book. In Sam and Dave Dig-A-Hole, author Mac Barnett introduces the readers to Sam and Dave, two buddies. One Monday morning, Sam and Dave decide that they should dig a hole. The two agree that they will not stop digging until they land on something incredible. As the Sam and Dave continue to dig, they keep on missing jewels by just a few inches. From time to time, Sam and Dave stop to have animal cookies and chocolate milk. Once they notice that they are yet to land anything spectacular, Sam and Dave decide to change the direction of their digging. However, as Sam and Dave make the turn, they miss something spectacular by a few inches.
Before they went for their dig, Sam and Dave took their dog. The dog tries to inform them, that there is something beneath the surface, but Dave and Sam decide not to listen to the dog. When Sam and Dave were tired, they decided to take a nap, and the dog continued with the digging. Suddenly, Sam and Dave fall in the hole and enter into a rather completely different world. Most children love to dig with the hope of finding something precious. Author Mac Barnett ensures that he keeps his text extremely simple and straightforward. In the process, he allows the humor in the perceptiveness of the dog and the near misses of the book’s illustrations. It is the frank delivery of the author, which makes the humor within the illustrations to work. Klassen’s illustrations re extremely wonderful. Readers are going to appreciate the manner in which Klassen allows all the characters to look out from within the pages to the readers.
The Terrible Two
The Terrible Two is the first installment in the Terrible Two book series by author Mac Barnett. In the Terrible Two author, Mac Barnett introduces the readers to Miles who is a new student in Yawnee. Yawnee is a town that is extremely popular for its cows. Miles hates the fact that he was forced to move from his old town, where he was extremely popular. In Yawnee, Miles was known as the town’s Prankster. In Miles’s first day in school, he realizes that the Prankster title already belonged to another student. The student who was known as the Prankster had managed to park the principal’s car across the hallway, thereby preventing the students from accessing their classes.
Apart from learning that his title already belonged to another student, Miles is also paired up with the school helper, Niles. Miles finds Niles to be extremely annoying. Each time, Miles tries to pull new pranks, the school’s prankster keeps on preventing the pranks. With that said, will Miles manage to earn his old reputation back? With that said, the Terrible Two is a hilarious book. It is not only witty but also self-aware without necessarily being over the top. Kervin Connell’s illustrations were exceptionally done and add humor to the narrative. Overall, the Terrible Two is a light-hearted read that has been filled with several magical moments.
