The story follows a flaneuse as she goes around the subcontinent of India. On the way, she is dealing with a lot. She has to deal with not only her past, but the present, which is rocky enough on its own. On top of all of that, she has to contend with her desires in life and what to do about them.

Shalini is shaken up after her mother dies. She is a young woman that hails from Bangalore. Even though she is beautiful and privileged, she is also restless. Her mother has passed away and now she decides that she is going to travel to a remote village in the Himalayas. Perhaps it will be enough to distract her from the fact that she has lost her mother.

Shalini is going to Kashmir, the northern region that is known for being troubled. She does not care if she will end up facing risk there because she is certain that it is going to give her what she needs. Shalini thinks that losing her mother may be connected to the disappearance of another. She is referring to Bashir Ahmed, who disappeared nearly a decade ago and no one ever heard from him again.

Shalini knew this man personally and now she thinks that the Kashmiri salesman had something to do with it. She remembers how he would come to her home during childhood and even though he was charming, she thinks that he is involved somehow. She makes up her mind that she is going to confront him and that is going to be that.

Shalini is able to finally get to the village. But when she gets there, she finds that everything is just a tad more complicated than she originally bargained for. There is a lot going on out here that is different from what she is used to dealing with. There are the politics of the region to contend with, for one thing.

Then there is the local family living there that was nice enough to take her in. They also have a history that is quite tangled and might end up affecting what she is trying to do here. Shalini also has no idea about the stability of the village and how it might end up going while she is a visitor.

It turns out that the village does have a lot of history of its own to contend with. She is not the only one attempting to come to grips with the past. The people in the village seem easily forced to be on the brink. When everything that is going on there starts to turn and the village starts to seem more volatile in nature, that is when she really starts to wonder whether she should have come at all.

It turns out that there is a lot of hate that goes back and extends through the years. Old grudges have been made and in a place such as this, the things that stick are the ones that usually tend to erupt all of those years later. The hatred is so bad that it is constantly on the verge of turning into all out violence on every level and take everyone down with it.

Considering everything that is going on and all of the chaos there, Shalini is going to be put into a tough spot. She is the one that chose to come here, thinking that she had a mission to carry through. But was it all a way of dealing with the loss of her mother? Did she come to this region too soon without really thinking it through as much as she needed to?

Shalini is going to have to face up to the situation and eventually will be put in a position where she has a choice to make. The only thing is that the choices that she ends up making may just end up having huge consequences for others.
