“The Magelands” is a series of fantasy fiction novels by the bestselling author of fantasy fiction novels Christopher Mitchell.
The author has said that his first memory is the death of Elvis which his grandmother said was because he had eaten too many cakes. He also told him that their garden was the home of several fairies and he believed her in those assertions too.
It was from the many stories his grandmother told that he began to develop a love for storytelling. By the time he was twelve years old, Christopher Mitchell began writing his own stories before he moved to pen role-playing games for his friends and his sister to play.
During his late teenage years and in his early twenties, he toiled and sweated over several novel manuscripts but most of these were pretty awful. There were many times when he wanted to give up given the constant rejections.
He wrote almost nothing for about a decade in his thirties if you do not count his post-graduate essays and reports at his day job. When Mitchell turned 40, his wife started pestering him to complete his novel.
One evening, he retired to his study ad started writing what would later become the “Magelands” series.
The author published “The Queen’s Executioner,” his debut novel and the first of the “Magelands” series in 2019.
The series of novels now has more than ten titles with a lot more in the pipeline. The series of novels has also spawned the “Magelands Origins” and the “Magelands Eternal Siege” series of novels.
Christopher Mitchell is thankful that he has a supportive wife who encourages him to write his novels. He usually releases about six titles every year.
At any given time, he is usually in the process of drafting a novel in one or more of the “Mageland” series and its spinoffs while editing and publishing another. The “Magelands Eternal Siege” series has so far proved to be his most popular with sixteen titles by 2023.
He currently makes his home in Scotland with his family where he, unfortunately, cannot get his desserts but the lochs, glens, and mountains more than make up for it. He is also a huge lover of Greek Tragedies and particularly “Euripides” but also loves reading fantasy, science and history, and anything about the Beatles.
The “Mageland” series is a set of novels that follow the life and times of mages from different lands who are bound by destiny as lovers, enemies, and friends.
The series is set in the Magelands which are five lands with distinct cultures, people, and environments. The lead characters in the series are different kinds of mages who come with different talents and skill sets.
There is the flow mage from Arakhanah named Sheila; Killop who is the sibling to the fire mage introduced in the prequel; an older councilor from Rahain named Laodoc and lastly Daphne, who finds himself roped into shady dealings while feeling from her own lands.
The “Magelands” series of novels comes with a whirlwind of circumstances and events coupled with danger, angst, and drama to make for explosive plots and raging storylines.
“The Queen’s Executioner” is the first novel of the “Magelands” series of novels. It introduces the mages who come together to battle for control of a world and face an ultimate test to determine the fate of the Magelands.
This work is set in a land named Rahain where everyone is expendable and the mage-born rule. It is here that an assassin, a politician, and a slave find themselves unexpected heroes who have the power to bring down the republic.
A slave named Killop has a secret, even though no one knows that the renegade Fire Mage is his sister. She is being hunted by the Rahain and if she is captured thousands of people could die.
Laodoc is a politician that has a great love for his country and over the years, he has come to hate many of the ancient traditions. He is now at risk of losing his career, his family, and his liberty to fight for his strongly held beliefs.
On the other hand is Daphne Holdfast, a Battle Mage who is on the run. She is employed as a killer for hire in Rahain but she is biding her time until she can return home and clear her name.
But then she has a chance meeting with Killop and this changes everything. Things get even more interesting when the Rahain border is inundated with more than half a million migrants bringing along their newly crowned queen and her sister who is a Dark Mage.
The second novel of the “Magelands” series of novels is “The Severed City.” Killop has just managed to escape from the Rahain dungeons and run into the mountains.
All he wants is to embark on his search for Daphne, even as his people cry for a leader who will break their chains of servitude. He needs to make a choice between leaving Rahaim to go looking for the woman he loves and ignoring their pleas.
The reality is that his people are in real danger of being destroyed and only he can lead them in their fight for freedom if he stays. Time is running out and he will not be able to do both.
On the other hand is a woman named Keira who is alone and shackled, guarded by soldiers. She is imprisoned in a ruined city that she had been forced to destroy.
The King of Holdings has condemned Kira as a war criminal and now is reviled by the world. For her Rahain captors, she is a prized weapon but she is determined to escape no matter the cost.
The third novel of the “Magelands” series of novels is “Needs of the Empire.”
Daphne Holdfast finds herself yet again on the run as she has been branded an enemy by the Emperor and the church. She has been forced to run away from the Imperial City with Karalyn her young daughter whose powers as a mage have been manifesting.
Daphne and her daughter will be traveling to the land of Rahain which is in turmoil after it was invaded and occupied by forces of the Alliance.
Meanwhile, missionaries of the Holdings persuasion have been converting newly freed Rahain masses, even as toppled elites are fomenting rebellion against the newly installed government.
This means Daphne and her daughter will need to go on a dangerous quest to Slateford, a safe haven that is under the rule of Killop, a Kellach Brigdomin who is also her daughter’s father.
What Daphne wants is to get back with her family but her path is blocked by one of the most powerful mages in the world.
