The Magnificent Devices book series is an acclaimed series of fantasy, science fiction, young adult, Steampunk, and historical novels. It is written by a prominent Canadian-born American writer named Shelley Adina. The series is comprised of a total of 14 books released between 2011 and 2018. Shelley has done the settings of the books in the 19th century alternate Victorian era. It is shown that the combustion engines are flopping and the steam powered devices have the capability to send the adventurous people to other cities and continents. Some of the devices are even capable of transporting people to another world. Shelley Adina has also depicted that the society is divided into two sections. One section is called Wits, which consists of people using their intellect to move forward in life, while the other section is called Bloods that is comprised of people having inheritances. The central character in all the books is shown as Lady Claire Trevelyan.

Shelley has described Claire as a Blood by birth, but she possesses the mind, heart, and soul of a Wit. Because of possessing the mixture of characteristic from both the sections, Claire Trevelyan lands in trouble very often. At the series’ beginning, Claire Trevelyan is introduced as a 17 year old girl, who goes on to become famous as the ‘Lady of Devices’. The setting is done primarily in London. Claire’s father, Viscount St Ives, expects her to learn all the traits of a lady of high status so that he can find a wealthy husband for her. But, Claire realizes that she is not destined to keep herself closed indoors. She goes on to explore her real talents in the chemistry lab.

After her father suffers a huge loss in combustion engine manufacturing, Claire is forced to come down to the mean London streets. She comes across a Royal Society of Engineers’ member named Andrew Malvern, and sets herself on the course of achieving her dreams. She experiences various betrayals and obstacles in her path, but overcomes all of them with the help of her intellect. In addition to Claire Trevelyan, author Adina has mentioned many other important characters in this series, including James Selwyn, Andrew Malvern, Maggie Polgarth, Lizzie Polgarth, Claude Seacombe, Alice Chalmers, Jake, Gloria Meriweather-Astor, Ian Hollys, Hugh Meriweather-Astor, Evan Douglas, Ned Mose, Margrethe Amelia Linden, Emma Makepiece, Peony Churchill, Claude, etc. This series is linked with another successful series of Shelley Adina known as the Mysterious Devices.

Shelley Adina is a noteworthy novelist of romance, Steampunk, and young adult stories. She has penned 24 novels for Harlequin, Hachette, and Warner publications, and around a dozen others for Moonshell Books, which is an independent press owned by her. Other than writing under her original name, Shelley uses the pen name of Adian Senft for writing stories of Amish fiction. Shelley has an MFA from the Seton Hill University, Pennsylvania. She is employed there as an adjunct faculty. Shelley Adina has won the RITA Award by RWA in 2005 and was nominated for it a year later as well. She was also a finalist for the Christy Award in 2009. When Shelley is not busy with her writing projects, she likes to indulge herself in the activities of sewing, gardening, quilting, and rearing her flock of chickens. Shelley says that she has been writing since the age of five. She was very much fascinated by the idea of writing when she was a child. She spent her early years growing up in Canada and then shifted to California, where she found her dream man and married him. Throughout her life, she has been inspired by the works of various prominent authors like Elizabeth Goudge, Nancy Drew, L.M. Montgomery, Cherie Priest, Vannetta Chapman, Suzanne Fisher, Gail Carriger, Connie Willis, Maria Snyder, Scott Green, Troon Harrison, Scott Westerfeld, etc. Shelley is pretty much satisfied with the way she has fared in her writing career. She hopes to keep doing the good work and getting the love of the readers for her stories.

When he is denied official help, Andrew senses a state of urgency with the shattering of friendship bonds and knows that it cannot be ignored. Based on Alice’s description, both Andrew and Claire know a brooding battle is about to take place in Venice. They fear that this evil can bring an end to their flock’s interference.
