Mary Joseph Dunn also known as Jo Beverley was born in Lancashire England in the year 1947. At 11 years, Mary was sent to an all-girls boarding school, the Layton Hill Convent, located in Black pool. At 16 years, she wrote her very first romance novel, which had a medieval setting and was completed in installments in exercise books. At Keele University in Staffordshire, Mary Jo studied American Studies and History. After graduating from Keele University, Mary quickly secured a job as a youth employment officer. She worked as a youth employment officer until the year 1976.

In the year 1976, Mary moved to Canada, where her husband had been invited to participate in a post-graduate research at the University of Dalhouse in Halfax. Once she discovered that her professional qualification was not useful in the Canadian market, Mary decided to develop an early interest in writing. Many of the rogue characters who were to later on appear in her books were created in an early manuscript which was entitled A Regency Rape. At this specific point, Mary did not have a fixed awareness of the extremely narrower literary boundaries that were drawn by traditional regency romantic novels, thus she in turn created a hybrid.

The precursor to the Regency novel had a cast, which was exceedingly unique. While respecting the intensity and scope of the genre, Mary went ahead to create exceedingly unique characters. At this point Beverly was yet to be published, since she had devoted her time and energy to take care of her kids. Additionally, she had also decided to participate in woman centered childbirth movement. Participating in this movement, inspired her to write about child birth in her novels and also portray them as accurately as possible.

The pivotal point in her career as an author came when she attended a talk by Janet Adams, The State of Romance that was held at the Beaconsfield Library in the year 1984. In the same year, Mary’s family moved to Ottawa where she becae a founding member of ORWA Ottawa Romance Writers Association. In the year 1988, Mary who was also a member of science fiction just as she was for romance became a finalist in L. Ron Hubbard writers contest. In the same year, Beverly sold her very first novel. While looking for success in science fiction genre, Beverly introduced speculative writing to her books, though some of this type of writing also appeared in most of her romance books and novellas.

In the year 2012, Beverly survived a fight with cancer and in the last four years, she did not have any of the cancer cells in her system. Unfortunately, the cancer came back and this time it spread more quickly. On 23 May this year, Mary met her unfortunate death. Beverly died in Yorkshire, England in a care home, which was once used as a convent. Her friend, Charlie and her husband were all at her side when she died.

Many of her works have been translated into several languages and have also won her many awards such as the RITA’s awards, two career achievements by the Romantic times, A Golden Leaf Award and a Reader’s Choice Award. Currently, Beverly is the only Canadian romance author to be inducted into the Romance Writers of America.
