Maria Luis is an American romance books author who has won herself a place as one of the Amazon Top 25 Bestselling Authors. She is a big fan of nature, books, dogs, and anything pretty, and by day she works as a historian specializing in 14th-century London and 19th-century New Orleans. But what do the two eras have in common? There is nothing much except scandals, diseases, and crime, which are some of Maria’s favourite topics. When not doing her research through archives, you will find Maria writing a sassy romance with strong alphas and beautiful women to sweep the alphas off their feet. Her favourite book is Scandal in Spring, authored by Lisa Kleypas.

Maria has established herself as one of the most popular authors in the romance genre. In her Road to Fire book, the first in the Broken Crown series, Maria presents an intriguing tale of murder, lies, and intrigue. She’s a genius whose brilliance shines throughout the pages of this book. Maria beautifully and vividly paints this beautiful, dark and twisted tale in such exquisite detail, allowing you to read and imagine yourself amid the romantic crisis. Her writing will send you into the story such that the world around you ceases to exist.
The universe she created will suck you in right from the start and never let you go until the end. And when you’ve thought you got it all figured out will serve you with a surprising and yet shocking twist you never anticipated. She’s designed a political landscape so treacherous and yet fragile against a backdrop of famous England torn apart and on the verge of a civil war, and yet in the midst of it all buds a romance of two unlikely souls.

The main characters in the series debut book are Saxon, a cold, distant, but safely guarded man. He is stubborn, grumpy and infuriating, and these traits make the perfect recipe for the ideal hero. You will fall in love with him as fast as Isla. Saxon is a conflicted man with conflicting loyalty and moral compass. Regardless of these shortcomings, his focus and determination is unwavering to the point that he often underestimates Isla’s capability to be as cold and ruthless as him, which makes him misjudge her right from the start.
On the other hand, Isla is a strong, sassy, vengeful woman. Like Saxon, she is also stubborn, plagued by grief and tragedy. She is responsible for protecting her siblings and taking care of them after their parent’s deaths. She understands her obligation and won’t let anything stand in the way, and not even falling in love can stand in the way. She is a badass, and though she isn’t perfect and has moments of naivety, she often makes irrational decisions that place her in trouble; she is quite tough and passionate. She is one of the few relatable and true heroines you will ever read.

Maria Luis doesn’t disappoint and repeatedly surprises the reader with endless twists and turns. When you thought you had something figured out, something else different happens. No doubt this story will hook you into its intricate web of lies and deception. It’s a true masterpiece, an extraordinary tale of lies and deceit spiced up with dark yet red-hot romance.

However, it must be noted that this book starts slowly and builds up through the chapters. The slow bit part of it is worth it as it allows the readers to get all the information in the later chapters. It’s a complicated tale with many layers, and the author introduces so much throughout the story. While it may seem overwhelming initially, you must take in all that the author gives, allowing you to be well informed about what is to come. Once you get all the information, you will immensely enjoy seeing things unfold against your expectations, thanks to the twists and turns. Maria’s descriptiveness of the city of London is beyond that of a standard setting. The city comes alive thanks to the vivid description, becoming yet another character in the story.

Say You’ll Be Mine is the first book in Maria Luis NOLA Heart series. We meet the heroine Shaelyn Laurence whose thought of ever returning to New Orleans never crossed her mind. It’s been over a decade since she has been home, and she hopes to make the trip as temporary as possible this time. Shaelyn plans to arrive, get her granny on the mend, and leave immediately. By doing so, she hopes she will have eluded her high school boyfriend- why she left Louisiana. But she doesn’t know that New Orleans isn’t big enough to hide from anyone, especially when it comes to hiding from your first love.

Meet detective Brady Taylor. He had lost hope of ever meeting Shaelyn after leaving town 12 years ago. Coming face to face with a woman he’s always loved, even in his absence, sends a jolt into his system. For years, Brady only focused on his career and gave up on women, his friends, and football. With a promotion just around the corner, distractions are the last thing he would want, but Shaelyn isn’t just a distraction. Seeing her brings back the past and lots of what-ifs for the future. But what would happen when they’ve both moved on? Brady shouldn’t pursue her romance when he’s got a promotion hanging on the line; after all, career advancement is what he’s always wanted for months. But with Shaelyn back in town, will he let her leave as he did once, or does he believe in second chances?

Brady is such a relatable character. He’s charming, loving, caring and stubborn but, like Shae, so vulnerable, flawed, and complex. His family also expects a lot from him; in their eyes, he thinks he’s disappointing. Brady always wanted to be a cop, bringing family pieces of their loved ones. That was not a path his family would choose for him. That’s why he wants to prove that he belongs and determines the right direction.

The story is engaging with beautiful scenery, which is very appreciable. The fact that the heroine got lost along the way and suffered a lot from past trauma brings some depth to her actions, even if they are games. Of cat and mouse with Brady tired me a little.
In conclusion, we have a beautiful light romance, funny and full of passion that will satisfy fans of the genre and bad boys. It’s an excellent read to decompress, which wasn’t necessarily something I needed.
