Mariah Fredericks is the author of the Jane Prescott series of fiction. The first book came out in 2018 and the sequel quickly followed. If you’ve been searching for a great murder mystery book to read, check out this awesome series!
A Death of No Importance is the first book in the Jane Prescott series. In this debut novel, readers get the chance to meet the main character for the first time. Jane is a maid in New York, and the year is 1910. She works in a household in the city that is decidedly upper crust.
She makes a pretty good living and has gotten far thanks to her dedication to serving as an art form. As a ladies’ maid, she serves families and individuals that live at the upper echelons of society in New York in the twentieth century. The key is to be invisible and to go unnoticed entirely but to appear when needed. It’s a job that takes a surprisingly sharp mind and the ability to be judicious as well as quick.
Like most that serve wealthy families in their homes, she sees quite a bit. Perhaps even more than the glamorous clients that she works for would realize. They get so used to having the help around and so much goes on that it can’t be helped that maids such as herself hear what’s going on and know a fair amount.
Jane’s current mistress is named Charlotte Benchley. Everyone in her family is surprised when she suddenly gets engaged to Norrie Newsome, who is known for being a playboy among society circles. Even though her family does not seem to understand the pairing, Jane has served Charlotte a long time and could see how the engagement would have developed among the two.
She also sees what the engagement and impending marriage would have meant to both of their families. Jane never sees the death of Charlotte’s love coming. He is murdered in a most gruesome fashion, and now the maid that no one pays attention to might just end up being the one person that is able to put the pieces together.
She is the one that might just be able to figure out the individual that might have had the motive to want Norrie to be dead. However, this could be anyone, from the family that he would have joined into through legal union or some other figures. These could be the men that survived a tragic mine accident in a mine that was owned by the Newsomes. Or the anarchists in the city rising up during a time of industrial revolution that grow tired of elitists being able to use their money get away with just about anything.
This is a novel that recounts a time in American history as well as a fictional murder mystery. Can this humble maid be the one person to figure out who it was that killed her mistress’s man? Pick up a copy of this engaging, gripping mystery book for yourself to find out!
Death of a New American is the second book in the Jane Prescott series by author Mariah Fredericks. If you loved the first novel in the series, then check out this sequel for yourself and see what all of the fuss is about!
By now readers have already met Jane Prescott, who works as a maid in New York City. The year is now 1912 instead of 1910, and the entire area is in shock. Like the rest of the country. New Yorkers are reeling after hearing the news about the Titanic sinking. Some even know people that were affected by the disaster.
Amid this tragedy, Jane is making her way to Long Island, traveling with the Benchleys. The purpose is to be present for the wedding of their daughter. At a relative’s mansion, Louise will become wed in holy matrimony to William Tyler. The Tylers together make the type of elegant couple that you only read about or glimpse in person once in a great while.
The handsome couple share many passions and love pursuing adventure and travel. Of the Tylers, Charles is notorious because he was the one to put down the famed Italian mafia running in New York. The mafia went by the name of the Black Hand.
Now he has settled down some, easing into the life of domestic bliss along with Alva, his wife. The visitors have begun streaming in from the city and are starting to adjust to the way that the household is run. They are planning the wedding that is coming up and everyone is excited. Jane gets along with the nanny of the Tyler children. Her name is Sofia.
Sofia is Italian American and a composed young woman. Everything is going along fine, until Sofia is murdered. It was a spring night and the maid is woken up suddenly by a scream coming from the nearby nursery room. When she goes in, she finds Sofia dead and a locked window wide open.
The family thinks that this could be the attempt of a kidnapping gone wrong. Maybe the intruder wanted their baby and the nanny intercepted what would have been a warning for Charles Tyler. When Jane’s help is requested by Michael Behan, a journalist and friend, she is intrigued and takes the case.
This maid may be just the person to find out what’s really going on. Does this family have something to hide? Can Jane catch a killer? Read this book to find out!
