Marion Zimmer Bradley aka Eleanor was born on 3rd June in the year 1930. She was born in Albany, New York in the United States of America. She was an American writer who wrote books mainly dwelling on fantasy, science fiction, historical fantasy and also science fantasy books. Marion was well known for the Arthurian fiction novel she wrote called the “The Mist of Avalon” and also “The Darkover Series”.
Marion started to develop an interest in writing as early as the age of 17. She knew at this early age that she could become a very talented writer. During this era, Marion was always fascinated by writing science fiction articles and this made it possible for her to start her own amateur science fiction magazine. During this time, she had not even finished her high school education. She was too practical to think as a young woman, her lifetime work entailed writing. Though the moment she finished her high school education, she joined the New York State College with her main intention being to become a teacher.
In the year 1949, she sold her very first sci-fi story that she had published and the same year, Marion Zimmer got married to Robert Alden Bradley who was the love of her life. She later began her professional writing career three years later after her first sold-out. She managed to sell yet another story magazine on sci-fi to the magazine Vortex Science Fiction. As a result of her marriage, she put a halt to her career plans and in the 1950s he gave birth to a son. She sacrificed most of her time in taking care of her son during this time. Despite her desire to write and publish her books, she was not able to publish any of her books until the year 1961. This is the time she released the sci-fi novel “The Door through Space”. The novel opened Marion’s floodgate as in the year 1962 alone, her byline appeared on five different volumes of which three of the volumes were under her name. The other two volumes works under various pseudonyms.
Marion attended Hardin Simmons University that is located in Texas where she was studying Bachelor of Arts in Psychology, Spanish and English. She completed her education and graduated from the same University in the year 1964. A year later from the time she graduated, she secured a job at the University of California where she did graduate work until the year 1967. During all this time, she never forgot her career as she continued writing, composing short but interesting stories and experimenting on things majorly dealing with science fiction and science fantasy elements.
Marion Zimmer Bradley was a co-founder of spiritual organization, which was the center of Non-Traditional Religion. She has gained a lot of popularity posthumously as a result of the accusations that have been levied against her. Walter H. Breen who was her husband by then, convicted her as a sex offender. Her own daughter Moira Greyland also accused her of child sexual abuse. Her first son David R. Bradley and also her brother Paul Edwin Zimmer also followed her footsteps and became published science fiction and science fantasy authors.
On 25th September the year 1999, Marion Zimmer Bradley died at the Alta Bates Hospital. This just came a few days after she was admitted in the same hospital suffering from a fatal heart attack. She left two sons David and Patrick, one daughter Moira Stern and two grandchildren.
She died at Alta Bates Hospital a few days after suffering a fatal heart attack, and is survived by her sons David Bradley and Patrick Breen, her daughter Moira Stern, and two grandchildren.
The book series of Marion Zimmer Bradley
The series the Mist of Avalon
The novel is based on the rise and fall of the Camelot. Bradley takes on the best characters and gives them new dimension and depth. The novel is written in a feminine perspective. The king and the Camelot’s knights have a mission of going to wars and battles and ensuring the security of the realm and the city. They also dwell in chivalric honor focusing. The women in this novel have a completely different priorities.
The story revolved around a much maligned Morgaine who is the priestess of the Avalon and Gwenhwyfar who is the Christian princess and also Camelot’s future queen. It is so interesting how the tales told by men changes when viewed through the woman’s eyes and experiences, though Arthurian legends are presented here. It also talks about the religious and political conflicts that exist between the new Christianity and the old ways of worshiping goddess. Though Christianity appears to taking control over the land, believers of every religion tries to take control of the throne. Morgaine receives a bad rap in the civilization of Christianity simply because she is a Druid High princess.
The Darkover series
The series is a sci-fi and science fantasy chronology the normally consist of short stories set in the world full of fictions and several novels as speculated by Marion Bradley. The chronology uses the designations of the time period that Mario first provided as the readers guide to darkover. The hundred kingdom and Ages of Chaos are some of the eras.
Marion constantly refer back to the Ages of chaos though only a few books were set during this particular era. During the era, the original colonist descendants have find a way to organize themselves into feudal-type society. This society have the ability to determine the individuals who are commoners and the ones who make up the aristocracy. The laran-based weaponry and technology marks the period’s level of creativity, accompanied by the creation of towers, domination of social and political life. Also settlements found in remote areas where those having exceptional laran abilities find their shelter and even trained. Due to these advancements, there is an emergence of constant civil war that make the Darkovans to be determined in exterminating themselves. The Ages of Chaos begins after 1000 years after the planet is colonized and last for about 1000 years as the darkover Concordance Walter Breen indicates.
