Marjorie M. Liu was born in Philadelphia and grew up in Seattle. She has lived in numerous Midwest cities, as well as Shanghai, Beijing, and Tokyo. Her mom is an American of Scottish, Irish, and French descent, while her dad is Taiwanese. She developed an early love of reading, from books like the “Little House on the Prairie” series by Laura Ingalls Wilder to the works of Charles de Lint, Robert Louis Stevenson, Jorge Luis Borges, and Joseph Campbell.

Marjorie majored in East Asian Languages and Cultures and minored in Biomedical Ethics at Lawrence University in Appleton, Wisconsin. During her undergrad years, she worked on her web design skills by designing this fan site called “The Wolverine and Jubilee” page after she discovered so many X-Men fan sites which she admired. Even though she’d never read comics as a child, she was familiar with the X-Men through the animated TV show and through fan fiction. Marjorie bought Wolverine and X-Men comic books for reference for her fanfic from Powerhouse Comics in Appleton. Writing this fanfic helped her improve her storytelling abilities.

She is a New York Times bestselling novelist, comic book writer, and attorney. Her “Monstress” series of graphic novels have won multiple British Fantasy Awards, Hugo Awards, five Eisner Awards, the Harvey Award, making Liu the first ever woman (and woman of color) to win an Eisner in the Best Writer category. She has taught comic book writing at MIT.

Marjorie’s fiction has received the Romantic Times Reviewers’ Choice Award twice for “The Mortal Bone” (the sixth “Hunter Kiss” novel) and “Tiger Eye” (first “Dirk and Steele” novel).

“Tiger Eye” is the first novel in the “Dirk & Steele” series and was released in 2005. The guy looks totally out of place in Dela Reese’s Beijing hotel room, like the tragic hero of some epic story, poignant and exotic. He is nothing at all from her world, neither his variegated hair nor his feline yellow eyes. But Dela has danced through the echo of his very soul, and she knows that this warrior would obey her.

“Shadow Touch” is the second novel in the “Dirk & Steele” series and was released in 2006. Elena Baxter is able to work miracles just with her fingers. “The Red Heart of Jade” is the third novel in the “Dirk & Steele” series and was released in 2006. The grisly murders are only the start. Dean Campbell, a clairvoyant former cop, gets sent in to investigate. He works with Dirk & Steele Detective Agency, this global association of more-than-human women and men. Psychics, shapeshifters, and other paranormals, Dean and the rest of his peers have devoted themselves to protecting life. However there are those that live to destroy.

In Taipei, he finds the remains of women and men that have been burned-alive, reduced to just ash and bone, which reveal a pattern much more deadly than any he has ever foreseen. Somebody knows Dean’s secret. And they know even more, about a power which can change the whole world, and about a woman that is able to complete him: Mirabelle Lee, the childhood sweetheart that he had once believed to be dead. All that remains now, was searing pain and blinding light, a purifying fire, and potent passion. Underneath all of it is The Red Heart of Jade.

“The Iron Hunt” is the first novel in the “Hunter Kiss” series and was released in 2008. During the day, her tattoos are her armor. At night, they unwind from her body in order to take on forms of their own, demons of the flesh which are turned into flesh. This is the only family that Maxine Kiss (demon hunter) has ever known. It is the only way to truly live, and the exact way that she will die. For one day her demons are going to abandon her for her daughter to assure their own personal survival, leaving Maxine helpless against her enemies.

However such is the way of Earth’s final protector, who is the only one that stands up between humanity and all the demons that are breaking out from behind the prison veil. This is a life that lacks love, revels in death, until the one moment (and a single man) changes everything.
