Mark de Castrique is one of the highly renowned authors from The United States, who is famous writing his books based on the mystery, thriller, young adult, and science fiction genres. He is particularly well known for writing the Sam Blackman and Buryin’ Barry Mysteries series. Other than writing novels, author Mark also has experience in the broadcasting and film production. He has even won an Emmy Award for one of his documentary works. Author Mark has formed a company known as Mark et al. As a part of this company, Mark writes and produces video films for both the broadcast and corporate clients. In addition to all this, he also gives consultation for writing the first drafts of any fiction work. Author Mark is married and has a beautiful wife named Linda. The couple has two grown up daughters with whom they divide their time between their homes in Washington D.C., and Nort Carolina. Author Mark began his writing career in the year 2003 with the release of his debut book titled Dangerous Undertaking. This book marked the beginning of his successful Buryin’ Barry mystery series. Following the success of this book, author Mark went on to write a few more books in this series as well as in another novel series. Apart from being a noteworthy author, Mark is a successful playwright, television producer, and public speaker. His excellent works in all these fields have helped him to win the Telly, Emmy, and Clio Awards. Several of his scripted stories have aired on the PBS as well as other commercial network partners. Being a native of the western North Carolina, author Mark likes to set most his mystery books in Asheville and in the surrounding regions of the Appalachian mountains.

Other than the books of his mystery series, Mark has also written a political thriller novel titled ’13th Target’ and a couple of young adult mystery books. The written works of author Mark also include a play called A Dying Business and a couple of short stories. The second short story is a sci-fi thriller called Double Cross of Time and is set in the year 2030. It shows how the scientific discoveries of the present time cause dangerous and surprising consequences in the future. Author Mark was born in Hendersonville, North Carolina. His father used to work as a funeral director and the family used to live on top of a funeral home. Based on this unusual setting, author Mark got the idea to write his successful Barry Clayton series. The idea also helped him to launch his writing career as a mystery author. Altogether, author Mark has written a total of 16 books in his career. Six of them are set in a fictional town called Gainesboro in the North Carolina mountains, 5 in Asheville, and 2 in Washington D.C. The Chicago Tribune has praised author Mark by saying that he has imperative skills of narration and subtle ways of capturing the geography of the setting of his books. He is efficient in capturing both the human and physical elements of geography. Author Mark says that it was time he spent living in Washington that inspired to write the DC thrillers. The elder daughter of Mark, Melissa Thomson, is also an author, who writes a children’s series. His second daughter named Lindsay works as a consultant of communications in Washington, D.C.

The Sam Blackman series written by Mark de Castrique is comprised of a total of 5 books, which were released between the years 2008 and 2015. All the novels in this series feature the chief protagonist as Sam Blackman, who is introduced as an ex-Chief Warrant Officer in the department of the Criminal Investigation Detachment of the United States military. In one of his missions in Iraq, he permanently injured a part of his leg and now lives in Asheville, North Carolina. The first book of the series was released under the title of ‘Blackman’s Coffin’. It was published by the Poisoned Pen Press in the year 2008. Sam Blackman is introduced as an angry man. After losing his leg in Iraq, he outspokenly criticizes the medical treatment given to him and as a result, he gets transferred to a Veteran’s Hospital, located in Asheville. There, he meets a fellow amputee known as Tikima Robertson, who is an ex-marine. She tells Sam that she has some work for him where he can make use of his investigative skills. Tikima also tells him to avoid feeling sorry for his situation and take up this important work for her. However, before Tikima can give information regarding the mission, she is found dead and her body discovered floating in a river. Later, her sister named Nakayla gives a journal to Sam that she finds in the apartment of Tikima. The journal dates back to 1919 and describes the entries made by a 12 year old boy. He has described how his father, who used to work as a funeral director, helped a black man named Elijah Robertson in transporting his relative to Georgia. Elijah was the great-great grandfather of Tikima and he was murdered around 90 years ago in the same manner as Tikima. After learning the whole story, Nakayla and Sam begin to search through the rich history of Asheville in order to find the truth behind Elijah’s murder and its link to the killing of Tikima.

The next book in the intriguing mystery series written by author Mark was published under the title of ‘Fitzgerald Ruse’. It was also released by Poisoned Pen publication in 2009. In the starting sequence of this book, author Mark has shown that Sam Blackman and Nakayla Robertson become partners and they decide to open a detective agency. With this, they hope that they will many mysterious cases to solve in the vast mountainous region of North Carolina. Eventually, they get their first case in which her client is an elderly woman living in a retirement community. She makes an unusual request to Sam. The woman asks Sam Blackman to right wrong that she did around 70 years ago. She tells him that her victim was Scott Fitzgerald and she had committed the crime of stealing a manuscript from him when he used to live in Grove Park Inn. Initially, the task seems simple to Sam and Nakayla. They think that they only have to retrieve the lockbox of the elderly woman, find the manuscript and deliver it to the heirs of Fitzgerald. However, as they move further into the case, they realize that the case is not as easy as it seems. They go through a lot of hardships before finally being able to solve the case.
