Mark Mills is a published British author. Born in Geneva, Switzerland on August 6, 1963, he is largely known for writing novels and screenplays.

He attended Cambridge University and graduated in 1986. He has resided in Italy and France and has taken the time to write things for the screen. To this effect, the first screenplay that he wrote was the short film, ‘One Night Stand’. It was BAFTA-nominated and the 1993 film starred Jemma Redgrave and James Purefoy. It also led to Mills receiving a Best Screenplay award in 1995 from the Angers European First Film Festival.

The author’s debut novel was titled The Whaleboat House, a title that it assumed upon a reissue. Its first title was ‘Amagansett’. The 2004 book led to the Crime Writers’ Association giving him an award for the Best Crime Novel by a Debut Author that same year.

Mark kept the momentum going by releasing his second novel, The Savage Garden. The book did fairly well as it became a number one bestseller and was selected as a Richard and Judy Summer Read. His third novel The Information Officer came out in 2009.

Mark is married. He shares two children with his partner and they reside in Oxford.

The project is to write a scholarly monograph that tackles a famous garden that was constructed in the sixteenth century. The garden is dedicated to the memory of the dead wife of Signor Docci and is a strange world that includes grottoes, statues, meandering rills, and classical inscriptions.

During the three weeks that he has taken at the villa, Adam starts to suspect something. He thinks that the garden may not just be a beautiful tribute but is full of clues to a murder, encrypted through the iconography of the garden. The student believes that even though Signor Docci has been dead for a long time, he is the one responsible for killing his wife.

More than just taking out his wife, Signor Docci has worked hard to fill up her memorial garden with some pointers that indicate the method and the motive of what he has done. This is what Adam has come to believe, but is he correct in his assessment?

He has an evolving relationship with the lady of the house, Signora Docci. She is somewhere in her seventies and her health is not the best that it could be. Through this relationship Adam ends up discovering clues to another potential murder that could have happened– although this is one that is more recent.

It turns out that the oldest son of the signora was shot by Nazi officers while on the villa’s third floor. Her husband has now passed away, but at the time he was insistent that the area should be sealed and forever preserved. Just as the garden was, the rooms of that third floor are still in place, frozen in the same state that they previously existed in.

Adam starts diving into this subject more and starts to suspect that the summer project he has been assigned to work on was a setup. Is he just an average student who is finding clues or is he about to find out that Signora Docci is using him so that she herself will be able to discover the real meaning of the dark, murderous past of the villa?
