Mark Newhouse is a reputed author of historical fiction, suspense, and thriller stories. He hails from The Villages, Florida, United States, and is particularly famous for writing The Devil’s Bookkeepers novel series. The first book of this series is the winner of the Gold Medal in the historical fiction category and has been labeled as the Best Book of the Year by the Association of Florida Writers. Newhouse has set this novel in the Holocaust ghetto that his parents had survived along with a few others. In addition to this series, Newhouse has also penned several middle-grade comic/mystery books. They include The Case of the Disastrous Dragon, The Case of the Crazy Chickenscratches, and Welcome to Monstrovia. Recently, he has written and published a few mystery books, audiobooks, books on economics and marketing, and some bilingual legal suspense stories.

Author Newhouse says that he considers himself honored to know that his stories and books have won prestigious literary awards. He also feels proud to know that people have given rave reviews to his historical fiction stories about gripping suspense and love set in the time of Holocaust terror. Newhouse has described the lives of several men who risked their lives to record the events around them as the Nazi threat continued to increase. He has shown how those men are forced to make tough decisions for the sake of the safety of their loved ones. All three of those books are inspired by real events that were recorded in Yale University Press’ The Chronicle of the Lodz Ghetto in 1984. The events were also narrated to Newhouse by his parents, who were among the few lucky ones to have survived. Newhouse’s award-winning children’s novels have a mixed style of Sherlock Holmes, Perry Mason, and Harry Potter. They feature children who have the knack for solving problems with the help of their courage and smartness.

The intention of author Newhouse behind writing such books is that he wants every kid to have a firm belief in their dreams and always strive to achieve their goals. While Newhouse was growing up, his parents had separated. He was bullied in school and his neighborhood. This forced him to make notes about what he felt at that time. And with time, he found his interest in telling stories through his writing. Newhouse has described a similar story of bullying in one of his books in which a troubled boy goes through incredible dangers while living in a secret region of the United States. He doesn’t let his troublesome condition come in the way of his work as he joins his uncle, a lawyer by profession, in solving cases.

In another book, he has depicted a brave girl defending a ferocious monster to prevent a disaster. He has described a situation where the girl goes through a difficult time after her parents get divorced, just like his situation when he was small. In the Rockhound Science Mystery novels, Newhouse has described several special children, who use fun experiments in their science labs, like developing ice pops, to catch crooks. Author Newhouse claims to not being good at drawing. So, he employs the service of Dan Taylor for giving colorful illustrations in his books. He likes to hear from his readers. When some of them send fan letters to him, it fills his day with more happiness. Newhouse expects all those who like his work to give kind reviews on whatever platforms they can to help in the promotion of his books and make them more successful. Currently, he is at work on another exciting novel and is expected to make it available to the public soon. Newhouse has high hopes with this book and all the other to come in the future.

The debut book of The Devil’s Bookkeeper series written by author Mark Newhouse is entitled ‘The Noose’. It was released in 2019 by the NCG Key publication. This historical fiction novel features the primary characters in the form of Chaim Rumkowski, Benjamin Ostrowski, Miriam Ostrowski, and several others. Newhouse has set the plot in Lodz Ghetto. While describing the story, the author takes the readers into the Lodz Ghetto and mentions the feeling of being enclosed in there for many years without the knowledge of what is going to happen next. He has used some real characters such as Rumkowski. Newhouse has depicted him doing the same things that he actually did. When readers see Rumkowski from their perspective and understanding of history, he appears to be either completely wrong or completely right. But, Newhouse believes he is just a simple man who did what he did for his survival.

Benjamin Ostrowski is introduced as an engineer, who lives in the ghetto with his wife named Miriam. The story is narrated from his point of view. Chaim Rumkowski selected Benjamin along with several others to put the Ghetto’s record on paper so that the world would come to know about it eventually. Every night, Benjamin and other men would fill pages in the record and Rumkowski would approve them. The men often wondered what he was up to. They didn’t how he planned for them to write about the events with the Nazis present everywhere and keeping a close watch on them. Ben considered this job to be a highly risky one.

Others also thought that it put them and their families at a high risk of losing their lives if the Nazis found out what they were up to. This novel ends with a lot of questions in the mind of readers, which are eventually answered in the subsequent books. Many authors believe that this book gives an emotionally riveting description of how life was in the ghetto. It affected them greatly and made their hearts filled with sorrow for the people who went through such testing times. The critics felt that this novel is emotionally charged and has the power to move anyone reading it. It shows what desperate attempts people are forced to make in desperate times.

The next installment of the series is called ‘The Noose Tightens’. This book continues to tell the story of the survival of the ghetto’s residents. Benjamin Ostrowski comes to be known as the numbers man among the record keepers. He is in charge of writing the daily count of deaths and the reason behind all those deaths. According to his entries, it seems that more number of people died due to exhaustion, starvation, heart attacks, and close to the barbed-wire fencing. The story then gives a personal account of Benjamin Ostrowski, who begins to think that his wife is indulging in an affair with one of his younger colleagues. This realization breaks him from within as he loves both of them.

The only reason he continues to live with Miriam and not confront her is his young daughter. Later, Miriam starts working in a warehouse as a part-timer, where she learns about the horrors faced by Jews in the neighboring ghettos. When she informs Benjamin about what she has witnessed, he begins to find a way to get Miriam and his daughter out of there. Benjamin’s friend, Singer, provides him assistance in executing this plan to succeed.
