Her Dutch roots and rural Pennsylvania spirit fuse as a concept in the Plain People… An old farmhouse situated in a valley where she lives with her husband; during winter, they travel to their vacation house in South Carolina… She enjoys reading, gardening, baking, taking care of her six grandchildren… And writing books, as the number is close to fifty seven… She used to write short stories and articles when magazine fiction was still convertible… Now it is Amish books and romantic suspense she concentrates on… A cup of Earl Grey tea is an integral component of the requisites without which she can’t start writing… Those are some of the details and aspects of Marta Perry’s background, daily activities and lifestyle.
She developed an interest in mysteries when she was eight, and read about Nancy Drew. It was then when Marta realized that might be her aspiration, and why not ambition, to write challenging stories one day. Till now, her favorite books are the classic mysteries of British origin.
Perry used to combine her writing with her career as a director of Christian Education. Her first writing was directed to children’s stories, incorporated in the curriculum of Sunday schools.
She finds the different genres she switches from one to the other as a refreshing exercise.
For her fiction writing, Perry received the Maroon and Gold Pen Award in 2004. Her books enjoy different prestigious awards.
Marta Perry describes her well-crafted style as setting a romantic story as a focus against the background of either a suspense or inspirational romance. She is also fascinated by historical fiction, and this is materialized in the series Keepers of the Promise. A challenging mixture in the books of the series is a storyline of a past event with a present reference.
Real people have vaguely an effect on Marta’s conceiving the characters. She usually makes them up, subject to her imagination, starting the plot with a faced problem that is followed by a fight to survive. And love often merges into the tissue of the story. Ideas for her books, however, may stem from real situations and be provoked by impressions of places which she visits, like, for ex., the interior of the Victorian Italianate. She brings a specific message in her books that people run through trials to become what God wants them to be by drawing lessons.
Allison Standish from Perry’s Where Secrets Sleep starts breathing new life after the betrayal of the beloved man. Her only asset is the inherited property of her grandmother. Clubs, music, and other city challenges are lacking, and settling down in a small environment collides with Allison’s taste for life. Her greatest fear is to be deserted by someone she is in love with. Trust is what she seeks for. And a genuine desire to build her own happiness, relying on herself and her true potential. Grabbing an interest in the small community where she starts searching for new horizons, Allison absorbs information about the Amish quilts – she tries to adjust to the life and atmosphere of the small town.
Rebecca Fisher, a heroine from Perry’s The Forgiven, is an Amish. She is chosen by her grandmother to tell the stories of their Amish family. Exploring them in her granny’s diaries, Rebecca gets inspiration from her life experience during World War II, and integrates her courage in her own life and perspectives. Her dream is to be the woman of strength alike her grandmother, and to develop that quality in her two kids, having an early loss of their father. It is Rebecca’s faith that keeps her moving ahead.
Among Perry’s full-length series set in the Lancaster County environment, Fallen in Plain Sight examines the specific clash between the life and mentality of the Amish community and the external world; between idyllic life and exogenous challenges. Courage and strength to overcome difficult periods and accidents are gained from the family and community support, as well as from the strong belief and devotion. It is Perry’s pure provocation to the reader to set the story in the suspense framework and contrast it with the peaceful Amish way of living. It also adds value to the intriguing nature of the storytelling, behaviors and solutions.
In Murder in Plain Sight, as an Amish Suspense #1 book, Perry elaborates on the details in the background of her characters, and the approach provides the reader with further understanding of their specifics. Some experts refer to Perry as phenomenal at the dialogues and descriptions she develops. The insight into the customs, twists and turns hold the attention till the final page. The authenticity of both English and Amish culture surprises as well-laced with mystery and romance.
Marta Perry admits that she prefers writing a 400-page novel than a shorter form like a novella, because she feels like hard-wired to generate ideas and produce her fiction.
She loves collecting books. The passion has started with a Nancy Drew book and the Dana Girls, and the colored covers, still lining up on Marta’s shelves, scream out for attention. As if the story never ends and once a book has been finished, the next to it waits to be opened…
Perry’s faith plays strong in her writing – it is God’s guidance of the process. That is one of her main messages to the readers: to feel love and think about its power to overcome fragility and past misfortune.
Marta likes sharing recipes, and for next Easter she recommends preparing the snow flurries on Easter Saturday. She preserves recipes in handwriting in her special box. She loves describing how she catches up on the pleasures during winter – for example, to spread out a jigsaw puzzle of an Amish scene on the coffee table and fix the pieces. This is a peaceful Amish setting, miles away from the sense for suspense. Marta Perry, however, enjoys over six million book copies, and the only way to feel the antagonism between a peace of mind and the violent outside world is to embark on a book of hers.
