Martha Keyes is an award-winning inspirational, historical romance, and general romance fiction author from Vineyard Utah.
Martha was born, brought up, and educated in Utah which is a place that will always be in her heart, even though she escapes from time to time to travel the world.
Her life has been a winding journey as she took quite the roundabout path to discover her great passion.
Aside from being quite the reader, her path would lead her toward taking French Studies for her bachelor’s degree and then a Public Health master’s degree both at Brigham Young University.
What is interesting is that after all that she still felt the artistic pull and would become a full-time photographer, even as she moonlighted as a writer whenever she got the time.
Keyes published “Wyndcross,” her first novel, and the debut of the “Families of Dorset” series of novels in 2019.
She now has more than twenty works of fiction to her name among them collections of short stories, novellas, single-standing novels, several series, and contributions to series by other authors.
When she is not writing her novels, she can be found looking for travel deals, honing her photography skills, and spending time with her husband and her two toddler boys.
As for how she got into writing, Martha Keyes has said that she has always been motivated and fascinated with word crafting. However, it was not until a few years back that she thought she needed to begin penning her own stories.
At some point, she was reading a novel and thought “I could write something like this” and hence decided to go for it. But it was not that easy and she ate humble pie for a long time since writing fiction is not that easy and she had a lot to learn.
Keyes had for years been reading regency romances for entertainment and particularly the works of Georgette Heyer. As such, when she decided to pen her own novels, all she was getting ideas for were Regency romances.
She finds some kind of fascination in high society from the Regency period that she thinks makes for some maddening and oftentimes fun challenges.
She began writing her novel during NaNoWriMo in 2015 and remembers that she got a lot of discouragement from her family that never believed she could publish her manuscript.
With 50,000 words by the end of the month, she pushed publish on Kindle about three years later.
Martha Keyes has said that she decided on self-publishing and Kindle after she got so frustrated with getting far too many rejections when she tried publishing the traditional way.
By the time she was writing, she did not know anything about self-publishing but by the time she was done writing, she had heard of indie publishing. Nonetheless, she decided to query agents even though she had not done her homework before doing so.
She had sent too many unfinished manuscripts and no one was biting when she ran into a writing community on Reddit.
Martha was advised to finish her manuscript and finally started getting replies asking her to tweak parts of her writing and realized her manuscript needed a lot of work.
Given that most agents will not accept resubmissions even after editing and rewriting, she decided to learn herself publishing. Moreover, she wanted more control over her writing the covers, and marketing.
Things would crystalize when she joined the Facebook group “Writing Gals,” where she got all the resources she needed to finally become a published author and she has never looked back since.
“The Art of Victory” by Martha Keyes introduces a young headstrong woman named Diana, who tends to have impulses that often leave her in hot water.
Nonetheless, she is not the typical fool, even if she rushes in where one would be expected to tread lightly.
Attempting to win the uncle of her friend Lucy to allow her friend to marry the man she loves, she finds herself dealing with a man who beats her by miles in the dark arts of scheming.
However, Diana has the advantage of having been taken through “The Art of War” by Sun Tzu. She is well versed in the tactical strategies of the age-old work which she uses enthusiastically against Russell.
Russell loves their battles and says he admires her but is he being sincere or could it all be part of his strategy to beat her? Diana has had the experience of being burned and would prefer not to be used and manipulated given how painful it is.
It is an entertaining story of Diana’s journey who makes some very good decisions and some that will make you cringe.
Martha Keyes’s novel “A Confirmed Rake” is another sweet romance in “The Donovans” series of novels.
When Rebecca Russell’s brother gets married, she thinks she finally has the chance to leave the isolated and reclusive home of her grandfather and find herself in the wide world.
Still, when she starts courting embarrassment and making all manner of blunders due to her inexperience, the only person that can help her is the irritable and brooding brother of her chaperone.
Valentine Donovan has a reputation for having mountains of gambling debts and being a notorious rake.
He is relying on charity from his father who gives it with strings attached and he can only hope that the Admiralty Court will grant him some relief.
His father has been putting more pressure on him and asks that he shows proof that he changed his ways if he is to get any more money from him.
When he meets the naive and engaging young woman who is his sister’s friend he comes up with a plan that will convince his father of his changed ways.
But it seems that he was totally unprepared for Rebecca who is a master manipulator and strategist who increasingly puts all manner of onerous requests to him.
“Battling the Bluestocking” by Martha Keyes is a thrilling Regency romance fiction work that tells the story of Phineas Donovan.
Fresh from Cambridge, he is a very sharp man who has just been employed as a live-in tutor for the son of Lord Bettencourt, who is offering a very generous salary.
If he proves how valuable he can be, he may just earn his employer’s patronage which may make him a vicar. If he gets the latter position, he may be able to pursue his intellectual pursuits in relative peace and comfort.
In her informed but humble opinion, Lady Sara Dannevile is even smarter and she thinks should be the one tutoring her younger brother rather than Donovan.
Sarah works hard to undermine the man but he is a plucky fellow who has a very dreadfully unsophisticated hobby that he keeps secret.
If she learns of this secret she could use it against him and finally convince her father that she deserves more than being treated as bait for a proper match.
But the problem is that there is a danger of being drawn into the unsophistication that is Mr. Donovan.
