Martin Archer
Author Martin Archer is best known for writing the “Company of Archers” series of novels, and he has also written the “Soldier’s Wars” series as well as a stand alone novel. His work is from the thriller and historical genres. Archer’s debut novel, “Soldiers and Marines”, also the first novel in his “Soldier’s Wars” series, was released in the year 2014.

Martin writes books about different military men who fight in different wars in different time periods.

Martin began his career in writing after he finished his education from the Queens Mary University of London. He writes because of his passion for writing, a profession that he says he cherishes.

“The Archers” is the first novel in the “Company of Archers” series, which was released in the year 2014. Arrows fly, swords clash, and churchmen and nobles alike get culled out of their coin, and the Venetians and the French get blamed for things they are not at all responsible for.

There is an Englishman that rises up through the ranks to be a company of archers’ captain. Then he leads all of its survivors back to England from the ongoing crusade waged by King Richard. Due to the intense fighting, not every archer makes it back. A few of the serfs and free men do make it back, and have now become hardened veterans looking to improve their own lot in the world.

“The Archer’s Castle” is the second novel in the “Company of Archers” series, which was released in the year 2014. George, Thomas, and William are finally able to arrive in feudal England with the remaining archers and have gotten embroiled with the Earl of Cornwall in a war that will forever change England.

The story telling in this one has not dipped even a little bit, and were equally as hooked this time, too. The book serves as light reading and moves along briskly.

“The Archer’s Return” is the third novel in the “Company of Archers” series, which was released in the year 2015. William leaves George (his son) and Thomas (William’s brother) back in England while he goes back to the ports of the Holy Land with his company’s ranks and galleys newly filled with some recruited archers. They have armed themselves with long bows and bladed pikes, so he can earn coins for his family and men by helping out the refugees escape from the victorious Saracens.

They are carrying pilgrims and merchants between all of the different crusader ports. The entire time, they go against Moorish pirates, who have been dominating the Barbary Coast and the Mediterranean Sea.

This book is well written and very exciting. Martin Archer is an author with an interesting style. The main characters’ personal stories are really emerging and becoming fleshed out further. Fans enjoyed the section on the system of surnames coming into existence.

“The Archer’s War” is the fourth novel in the “Company of Archers” series, which was released in the year 2015. Blood gets spilled, battles follow, and ladies are won and lost while William and Thomas return from the crusades. They find out that King Richard has appointed someone else to be the Earl of Cornwall.

Readers found this to be another novel from this series that made it tough to put down, and sets a brisk pace. Archer describes everyone preparing for battle nicely, and how plans get screwed up due to little things.

“Rescuing the Hostages” is the fifth novel in the “Company of Archers” series, which was released in the year 2015. William, along with the new recruits and the survivors of the company of archers, has a successful raid of Tunis on their return from England to the Holy Land.

Instead of continuing their journey to the Holy Land’s ports so they can get their bread and coin while they transport desperate refugees and pilgrims to safety, they head to Constantinople. While here, they attack the dwindling Byzantine fleet in order to save some of their fellow archers who were captured and have been held for ransom. They are attempting to reap a lot of devastation and destruction in order to turn the tables and get paid to leave.

Here is an action-packed novel that readers found to be some fantastic reading. Fans enjoy seeing the atmosphere and flavor from these times that Martin creates.

“Kings and Crusaders” is the sixth novel in the “Company of Archers” series, which was released in the year 2015. John is about to be crowned king, after Richard dies. Excitement and action occur as Pope Innocent III orders yet another crusade to free Jerusalem as well as the towns of the Holy Land.

Thomas, William’s priest brother, and the archers become involved after the Pope asks for Thomas to help out one of his assistants to carry a “cease and desist” notice to the crusaders. This is a letter that some of the leaders of the crusaders and their Venetian allies know all about. They are all willing to start a war in an effort to keep the notice from being delivered.

Martin Archer delivers simply brilliant and compelling reads time after time, with this just being the latest example. Each of the characters are complex and there are enough turns and twists to keep you guessing the entire time.

“The Archer’s Gold” is the seventh novel in the “Company of Archers” series, which was released in the year 2015. It is the year 1203. John has succeeded Richard the Lionhearted as the King of England. That is when Thomas gets captured as he is trying to deliver a letter written by the Pope to the gathering crusaders who are trying to liberate Jerusalem from the Saracens once again.

The gritty realities of the period as well as the action, fighting, and betrayal are constant while William takes his galleys and Marines to Constantinople to try to rescue his brother.

Readers enjoy Martin Archer’s style of writing, and they cannot get enough of these stories and the world they are set in.

One Response to “Martin Archer”

Best and most readable series I have ever read. Archer writes in UK English so be prepared for slightly different spellings such as neighbours instead of neighbors. Over all – six stars. His Cage’s Crew should be a TV series.
