Mason Cross is a Scottish author of fiction. He is the author of the Carter Blake series, which features the debut thriller novel The Killing Season, released in 2014. There are more books in the series and this first novel was followed up by The Samaritan, The Time to Kill (also known by the alternate title Winterlong) and Don’t Look for Me.

He has also published some short stories in the crime genre which have found audiences through publications such as First Edition and Scribble. Mason Cross’s short story “A Living” made the shortlist for the Quick Reads Get Britain Reading Award. It was also published in the Sun Book of Short Stories. Cross is also the author of the fiction novel Presumed Dead, due to be released in 2018.

The Killing Season is the first book in the Carter Blake series. Fans of crime and action drama will love this pulse-pounding action adventure! Bestselling author Lisa Gardner called this new main character from Mason Cross one of “the best new series characters” since the debut of Jack Reacher and praised Cross’s “no holds barred” dive into a plot that is “an adrenaline rush”. She advises readers to be prepared to be turning the pages of this debut novel into the night.

As you might have guessed, the main character in this series is called Carter Blake. But he quickly explains to the readers that his real name is not, in fact, the name that has been given. It’s the assumed name of a man who has a wide array of talents that normal citizens do not. One of those skills includes finding people who have gone off the grid in an attempt to avoid being found.

It all starts with Caleb Wardell. He is known to many others as the Chicago Sniper. He was in prison and lined up on death row to be executed. However, he manages to escape just two weeks before he is due to be executed by the state. The F.B.I. has no idea what to do, so they call upon the man that is known as Carter Blake to help them out and track down the Chicago Sniper. Little do they know that the case is somewhat personal as Wardell actually knows Blake.

Blake won’t be taking on this case alone. He’s going to be paired with special agent Elaine Banner. She’s an ambitious woman of a middling age that is managing to balance life working as a single mother and her career, which is doing quite well. She and Blake are charged with taking the Sniper down as he makes his way across the country. Even worse, they’ve gotten word that he might be just killing people at random.

Just when they are starting to feel that they are making headway in the case, Banner and Blake are forcibly sidelined from pursuing the case. It doesn’t make any sense, but they are banned from pursuing Wardell by the same Bureau that called him up to do so. Banner and Blake charge ahead anyway and are doing their best to guess where the killer might go next.

These two agents won’t be swayed from the case, but will they survive the nest of corruption and lies that they uncover as they go deeper? It’s time for Blake to break the rules and take on the bureau if he is going to ever have a chance of stopping Wardell dead in his tracks— and exposing a conspiracy that is too big to be believed. Can they find the man who is wreaking havoc on America, or will the bureau stop them before they can really bring a murderer to justice?

Pick up this fast-paced novel for yourself to find out how Blake and Banner do as they navigate the various twists and turns of the case. It’s the first in a number of exciting Carter Blake novels from author Mason Cross, and you won’t know how it ends until you check it out for yourself!

The Samaritan is the second book in the Carter Blake series. It was released in 2015. There’s no rest for the wicked in this gripping second novel from Mason Cross. The L.A.P.D. has more than their fair share of cases to attend to, and when the body of a woman turns up, Detective Jessica Allen figures this is just another crime in the state of California.

But this isn’t just any regular body you might be called to check out while on the job. Found in the wooded area of the Santa Monica Mountains, the corpse of what used to be a young woman is mutilated. This was no accident. Jessica Allen has seen this type of crime before. The only thing about it is, it was over two years ago and it was all the way over on the other part of the country. She wants to think they’re related, but is it logical to do so?

It turns out that there is a serial killer on the loose. At any given time, there are a number of serial killers active in the United States, but every once in a while one gets into the news when they get sloppy or very active. The most dangerous killers operate under the radar. That is just how sadistic killer The Samaritan has been operating for a decade at least.

The serial killer makes a pattern of selecting his victims, and they’re all the same: female drivers on the road on their own in vehicles that have broken down. He likely pulls over and pretends that he is trying to see if they need aid. Then, of course, they wind up dead. For this reason, the media quickly dubs him The Samaritan, after ‘the good Samaritan’. The police start an investigation into the matter, but with few leads and a killer that never leaves a trace of DNA, they quickly come up against a wall.

That is until Carter Blake comes onto the scene. The unique manhunter has shown up to give his services over to help and try to stop the killer. Blake is experienced in dealing with these scenarios and thinking like the men he is tracking down. He might be just what they need to predict the moves that the Samaritan will make.

Allen and her coworkers are suspicious of Blake at first. In their eyes, he seems a little bit creepy himself. But as the amount of people killed accelerates, they’re going to need Blake if they’re ever going to stop the killer. Can they do it? Pick up The Samaritan to find out!

Hi Lisa – Winterlong is listed above along with its alternate title The Time To Kill. Una Fuga Sospetta is just the Spanish title for The Killing Season.
