Matt Shaw is an English author best known for writing extreme horror stories. He was born in a Winchester hospital and started to become interested in writing from a young age. He got his start writing short stories and screenplays for his own amusement. He kept at it and was finally published at the age of twenty-seven years old. In addition to his writing, he is also a published photographer and cartoonist. Shaw added to his resume in 2018 when he produced and directed his feature feature film, Monster. He then followed that up the next year when he produced and directed his second film, Next Door.
When Shaw was in secondary school he started his journey to a writing career. He would sit home and write books during this time. He attended college and switched from writing books to writing screenplays. His stories were often very dark in tone and Shaw ended up putting himself into therapy because he felt that his thoughts were too dark. The doctors told him to write things down in a mood journal, but he didn’t enjoy that and began writing books again. He wrote about everything that he could think of and eventually that turned into his first self-published novel, Im Fine. He got some good response to that book’s release and decided to adapt some of his old screenplays into novellas as well.
One of Shaw’s main influences is the work of Roald Dahl. The author is most thought of for books like Charlie and the Chocolate Factory, but Shaw admires the darkness that show up in all of his stories as even the children’s books have some darkness to them. He is an even bigger fan of Dahl’s adult work. He believes that it is some great work and that Dahl is a true master of the surprise ending. Matt Shaw is also a fan of the authors Billy Connolly and Rik Mayall who influenced him heavily on the comedy side of his writing.
Matt had an interest way of going about making his first movie. Him and Michael Bray, a fellow author, were close friends who had noticed another author was teasing some big news. The two considered this author to be a bit of a rival so they were worried that it might be a film. Before the other author could make his announcement, the two set out to crowdfund their debut feature to beat him to the punch. Funnily enough, that author wasn’t making a film at all, but the ball was already rolling and they eventually made Monster.
Below Deck: Hell or High Water takes place on a super yacht, the kind that costs more than most people’s house. The guests on this type of yacht are used to the best service, the best food, and the best times. It is set to be the trip of a lifetime and the Captain will do whatever they need to do to ensure that is exactly what it is. The guests leave with smiles on their faces and leave hefty tips for the captain and his staff. It’s questionable if they would be smiling or living big tips that whole time if they knew what they had been eating on their trip. The Captain and his staff prepare their favorite snack for their guest: human meat.
Another extreme horror novel by Matt Shaw is The Call. Jamie Lee makes a reservation at her usual spot for a getaway weekend with the man she has been seeing behind her husband’s back. When she arrives, she hears the phone ringing but doesn’t know who it is. She worries if it is her lover who is running late or maybe something is wrong. The thought puts her mind into overdrive as she doesn’t even know who would have this house number, why they wouldn’t just call her mobile phone. She decides to answer the phone, but it turns out to be a major mistake as it will be the last call she’ll ever answer.
Pieces is another horror novel by Shaw. In this one, Billy Smith is seeing a woman behind his wife’s back, one that he started by paying her for the hour for. Sherry was a sex worker, but the more she saw him, the more her feelings for him grew and started to become real. She believed that he would leave his wife and stopped charging him, instead seeing him as her boyfriend. However, Billy would never leave his wife, especially for someone in her profession. He heads home to his wife one night after seeing Sherry and finds that she is not there. He then gets a mysterious package that contains his wife’s tongue. If he wants to get the rest of her back, he’ll need to follow the trail of clues as more packages come in.
Shaw delved into the world of suspense and supernatural with The Mariana Trench. In this novel, a series of earthquakes have been erupting from deep within the trench, the deepest point on the planet. A team of scientists sets out to find out why and sends a team down into the depths. They are funded by a billionaire who is along for the ride in a specially designed submarine. As they head deeper and deeper into the trench, they have no idea what is waiting for them below. Nightmares in the deep and the world will never quite be the same.
A Roll of the Dice is a unique, choose-your-own adventure style reading experience from Shaw. The book features a main character who has to roll the dice to determine which action he will take, but the readers of the book also roll the dice and go to a different spot based on the roll. A unique story with multiple paths and endings. Readers will be able to get more than one readings and more than one outcome from this story.
