Matthew Betley was born in New Jersey in the year 1972, whose parents then moved to Cincinnati, Ohio. Matthew considers Cincinnati to be his home since he spent most of his childhood there but still has affinity for the New York Yankees. Matthew is an alumni of the Miami University in Oxford, Ohio who completed his B.A. form the university majoring in psychology and minors in political science and sociology. Matthew has had a colorful career in various fields since he was out of college.

While still in college as a senior, Matthew worked as an intern in the Public Defender’s office in Washington D.C. As an intern, he used to investigate felonies, mostly murder cases which gave him a first hand formidable experience in the crime world, which Matthew says, could fill up a non-fiction book on its own. Once graduated, Matthew worked in the corporate doing various jobs.

It was 1999 when Matthew Betley joined the Marine Corps, quitting his corporate job. Matthew spent has held a number of positions during his ten year tenure with the Marine Corps as a Marine officer. He was deployed to Djibouti and Fallujah, Iraq after the 9/11 attacks and spend quite a long time in the field. Matthew says that, his first hand battlefield experience in Iraq, has helped him frame an interesting war story, in his first book – Overwatch: A Thriller (The Logon West Thrillers), the first of a series. As the much awaited book launched on the 1st of March, 2016, Matthew Betley was expected to follow along the lines of Robyn Carr and Jack Reacher as another ex-marine, who would later on become a great fiction-writer specializing in the genre.

Matthew Betley said that his inspiration to become a thriller writer came from his experience during his deployment to Iraq. He says that, the war changed life and the deployment shaped him into what he was almost thirteen years after the war ended, when he released his first book. Also, he says that, the inspiration for The Logon West Thrillers series came from his interest to create a strong character, who was far from perfect. He said that he had written extensively about his flaws like his alcoholism, his struggle with PTSD, his failed marriage, etc. in the series.

While talking about his first series, Matthew Betley said that, all he wanted to write was an action packed thriller, a blockbuster that would entertain and grip the readers from the start to finish of the book. Apart from entertaining, he also wanted to include his experience as an ex-Marine and through the story make the reader realise that the world can be a cruel place and awful to live in. He looks to explain this in the eyes of the protagonist – Logan West. He said that he had tried to create an alternate version of the cruel world in his book, where the leaders of the nations have the fortitude and integrity to try hard to make difficult decisions for the sake of the humanity, when they become necessary. He stressed that Overwork is a work of fiction even though it might seem otherwise at first glance.

When asked about his experience of his deployment in Iraq, Matthew Betley said that, he was deployed in Fallujah for most of his tenure in Iraq. However, he had to spend a month in Taji and lived on the Iraqi side. He had spend the late summer in the Anbar Province which became the most dangerous place with a lot of war casualties during his period. He had to struggle to survive the frequent rocket fire and mortar. He had to witness the deaths of several of his friends and recalls the death of a civilian contractor who was killed by a rocket which landed outside the reinforced tent that the contractor was working in. He said that he dedicated his first book to the number of young marines who died during the war and hoped that the origin story of the series did justice to the memory of servicemen who sacrificed their lives in Iraq.

Overwatch, the first book in his planned ‘The Logan West Thrillers’ series was launched on the 1st of March, 2016 and was available as Hardcover and Kindle editions from the day of its launch. The book serves as a great origin story to the start of an awesome thriller series which follows the story of Logan West, an ex-Marine. Logan West has been a Marine officer and had been deployed in Iraq during the 2003 war. Logan has suffered a numbers of problems after his retirement and still struggles with his alcoholism, sufferings from PTSD and his failed marriage. He is caught in a problem when he answers a ringing phone previously owned by a now dead person. He unknowingly triggers an unknown organization into tracking down an Iraqi artifact. He is then contracted by the FBI to assist them stopping the unknown operatives.

Matthew Betley, upon retiring from the Marine Corps, has himself suffered from PTSD and has been alcoholic in the past, when he resorted to alcohol to deal with his depression from the war trauma. He said that when his first book was launched, he had been sober for more than 7 years. While his protagonist shares many of the problems that Matthew faced in the past, he says that his experiences helped him write the book, but the book is a work of fiction and does not reflect his own life in any way. Matthew has always been open about his alcoholism in the past and hopes to inspire many ex-marines who took to alcohol to deal with the depression. He credits his recovery to his time as a Marine, which infused in him a sense of personal accountability and discipline.
Matthew Betley is open about his political views and is a self proclaimed conservative. He says that he loves the work of other notable conservatives such as Rush Limbaugh, Bill Kristol and Charles Krauthammer. He said that he loved and respected anyone with a “rapacious wit and cutting edge sarcasm”.

I seemed to have missed something in this series. In the prologue of Field of Valor, Logan and John are being chased by the secret service, Sarah calls to Logan to say she is pregnant. How do they escape the situation and what book is it in.

I read the first book over watch that I had acquired for free, it was the first of that type of book for me. I loved the book, it seemed like it could have been taken from today’s happenings. I immediately ordered the other three books of the series which I am about to start reading. TBD

I was given the paperback book, Oath of Honor. This is the first book that I have read authored by Matthew Begley. I am 75 and have read many books over the years. This book surpasses all that I have ever read. I could not put it down. I am A Navy Veteran from the sixties and live in New Jersey. I look forward to purchasing his other books and would love to meet him. Perhaps someday he will have A book signing. Thank you Matthew for your service and patriotism to our country. With respect and blessings. Bob Radmore Senior

No discussion wanted. Just a message expressing admiration, and thanks.

These books are, simply put, outstanding. Vince Flynn was just as stunning, and I am so glad you have moved seamlessly into that void. I absorb the lives and sacrifices of the men you write about, because I have, in the past, before 2017, felt despair at what was, and is-happening to threaten this world. (Our country’s representative, who has never run anything, was bowing before tyrants, apologising for the United States of America, for God’s sake.)

So many sick, ideological, brain-frozen humans are doing so many unspeakable things to other humans, that I could barely function. You write of our military men and women, whom I honor with all my heart, and I am the stronger for their efforts to keep the world upright. I know they’re out there, hunting down too many psychopaths willing to commit any atrocity for power.

I used to think religion would lead to the death of this planet. I now think Ideology is the worse poison. It includes religion, of course, but goes beyond, to encompass the political system, as well. Indoctrination of our youth begins in the first grade. I speak from bitter experience.

Thank you, Sir. I offer my deepest respect and appreciation for your service, and now for your message- that our forces are a FORCE to be reckoned with.
I eagerly await your third book. What a talent!
