Combining high-octane action and fantasy has been a field of expertise for the American author Max Gladstone for some time now. Creating exciting suspense fueled long-running series, he works at getting his readers invested in the characters and action and keeping them there. Pacing his stories out over a course of books as well, he has been able to master the serialized form of storytelling too, something which has gone a long way to securing his success as an award winning novelist.
Early and Personal Life
Born on the 28th of May in 1984, the future fantasy author to be Max Gladstone was born and raised in America. With a life-long affinity for the fantasy genre, he immersed himself in all the fantastical worlds that the form had to offer him. This would, in turn, inspire him to start building worlds of his own, whilst he would also put experiences of his own into his work as well.
Attending Yale University he would later go on to study Chinese, which was after going to St. Andrew’s-Sewanee School in Tennessee. All of this would give him the background that he needed to continue his learning as an author, as he gained the academic tools necessary to carry on. It would also allow him to focus on his love of writing in his spare time, concentrating on progressing himself as a writer.
Later going on to work in China, he spent some time working as a teacher there, as he worked in Anhui in one of the more rural areas there. This was from 2006 to 2008, followed by working for a car magazine as a translator, all of which would give him experience within the field. Gaining the experience required, he would finally become a writer, allowing him to achieve the dream he’d always wanted.
Currently working from his home in Cambridge, Massachusetts, he continues to work as a highly successful author. Not only that, but he is also working with role-playing games companies, as his imagination is highly sought after within the industry. A clear and confident writer, he will carry on producing work for many years to come, as he continues to develop his already impressive legacy.
Writing Career
His first book was brought out in 2012, with the novel ‘Three Parts Dead’, which was released through the ‘Tor Books’ outlet. Setting up his infamous ‘Craft Sequence’ series of novels, it was met with a positive reception, as he garnered acclaim straight away. This would allow him to become a household name in no time at all, as he would quickly follow it up with a succession of sequels.
Over the years he has produced a number of series, as he is a master of the serialized format over a long period of time. Whilst the chronological order may not fit the publication order of franchises such as his ‘Craft Sequence’, they still feel complete and whole. Approaching them with a sense of grandeur, he also has the ‘Bookburners’ franchise, which he releases in the format of seasons.
Working within interactive fiction too, he manages to incorporate the reader and ‘player’ into his ever expansive worlds. Setting up projects with companies such as ‘Palzo Publishing’ he is currently working on a ‘Pathfinder Roleplaying Game’ which is expected to follow in the future. This has allowed him to develop the worlds that he creates, establishing himself as a clear and prolific presence within the role-playing industry as well.
Winning awards for his work too, he has managed to gain favorable reviews, as well as being an international bestseller. Nominated for a ‘John W. Campbell Award for Best New Writer’ in 2013 for his 2012 debut novel, he made a considerable impact with his first release. Appreciated both at home and abroad, he is able to bring his stories to a worldwide audience, due to the universal appeal and nature of his work.
As an author Max Gladstone has come a long way in almost no time at all, as he’s brought out books at a rapid pace. A clear proponent of the urban fantasy genre and fantasy in general, he is a much sought after voice within the industry. This something that’s expected to continue for some time yet, with a lot more books set to follow in the near future.
Last First Snow
The fourth in the ongoing ‘Craft Sequence’ series of novels, this jumps straight into the action immediately wasting no time at all. Picking up from where the last one left off, it manages to build upon the story that came before, whilst also developing it in the process. Brought out initially in 2015, it was first released on the 14th of July through the ‘Tor Books’ publishing label to much acclaim.
Still bearing the scars of liberation some forty years on from the God Wars, Dresediel Lex resides in Skittersill, a poor district strewn with remnants of the old order. With the King in Red hiring Elayne Kevarian from the Craft firm called the Kelethres, along with others, it would seem that they have their work cut out for them after the people rise up in protest. This leads them to the take up a position of bargaining, as Elayne and Temoc find that they are opening up old wounds from the past. Will they quell the anger of the people? How will Lex factor into all of this? When is the last first snow?
The Angelus Guns
Brought out through the ‘Tor Books’ publishing label once more, this was originally released in 2014 on the 16th of July. Working as a stand-alone title, it manages to create a self-contained world that isn’t part of an ongoing series of books. With a loyal following of fans already eagerly awaiting, it shows a clearly well developed and confident author at the height of his writing career.
Searching for her missing brother, a soldier that is angel like goes on the hunt amidst a celestial Civil War. Set in a somewhat futuristic world, it sees the story of a brother and sister, as the brother leaves home, with the brother going after him. Terrified of what may happen to him during the war, she finds that she must search for him in order to stop herself from worrying too much about him. Will she be able to find him? Can they survive the war? What will become of the Angelus Guns?
