Max Lucado was born in San Antonio, Texas on January 11, 1955 and was the youngest of four kids to Thelma and Jack Lucado. He grew up in Andrews, Texas and his childhood was both simple and idyllic. His dad worked in an oil field, as his mom served as a nurse.

During his childhood, he was chased or was chasing Dee, his beloved brother. Once he was a teen, his rebellion began. Max started wondering if there was more to life than chasing girls and parties after a specific drunken night. He believes now if Jesus had not changed his heart around, alcoholism would have been a part of his future.

He went to Abilene Christian University and got an undergraduate degree in Mass Communication. During his time as a student at Abilene, he worked to pay his way through college by going door-to-door with the Southwestern Advantage entrepreneurial program.

At first, his goal was to become a lawyer, but a mission trip and a required Bible course at the school made him change his mind and he decided instead to become a missionary. This required him to have at least two years experience ministering at a church and get a graduate degree in Biblical and Bible Studies. He would later get a master’s in this field.

Upon graduating, he became an associate minister in Miami Florida at Central Church of Christ. Responsibilities when he started included penning a column for the church’s newsletter and overseeing one of the singles’ groups. He spent two years in Miami before he moved he and his new bride, named Denalyn Lucado to Brazil in order to become full-time missionaries. His father died in the year 1987 from Lou Gehrig’s disease, and after the couple had spent five years in Brazil, he moved his family back to the states so that he would be closer to his mom.

He is a writer and author, and he says that he pens books for people who do not read books. Max’s books have still sold one hundred million copies over 54 languages worldwide. He is also a preacher at Oak Hills Church, formerly the Oak Hills Church of Christ in San Antonio, Texas.

He has won the Charles “Kip” Jordon Gold Medallion Christian Book of the Year award for “When God Whispers Your Name”, “Just Like Jesus”, and “In the Grip of Grace”. His work appears regularly on bestseller lists, including the New York Times Bestseller List.

His first book, called “On the Anvil” was released in the year 1985, and has been sharing the promises of God in articles, media interviews, sermons, and books.

“You Are Speical” is the first novel in the “Wemmicksville” series and was released in the year 1997. Max was interested in helping kids understand their own value, from God’s perspective rather than his own. Wemmicksville is a land that was created by the “God” figure of the story, called Eli. He creates each Wemmick in this town special, each one with its own personality and look.

Each video and story is a brand new adventure with the people of Wemmicksville. The central character is Punchinello, and he is joined by his friends Chip, Lucia, and Splint. Punchinello strays from Eli and he begins to start having problems. Only when Punchinello sticks close to Eli does he really see how he should walk through life in Wemmicksville.

Eli helps Punchinello understand just how special he is, no matter what the other Wemmicks might think. Kids will learn an important lesson, it doesn’t matter how the world views them, God really loves them like they are.

This book does a great job of teaching lessons, and making readers realize they are special and not to judge anybody else. Some have read the book many times, and cry each and every time.

“You Are Mine” is the second novel in the “Wemmicksville” series and was released in the year 2001. Finally, all of Wemmicksville are saying Punchinello is a good Wemmick. This is something he has always wanted to hear. In his efforts to please the crowd, he forgets what Eli has taught him. When others begin collecting balls and boxes, Punchinello decides that he wants to have some as well.

They make him feel very good, until he remembers how his arms hurt from holding all of them. Until he remembers just how tired he is from working to buy more of them. He gets into Eli’s workshop and gets reminded of how much he has given up to have all of those balls and boxes.

Once more at Eli’s knee, Punchinello hears the words that he needs most, that he is special because he is Eli’s not due to things he has.

“If Only I Had a Green Nose” is the third novel in the “Wemmicksville” series and was released in the year 2002. A green nose. Why that’s preposterous, Punchinello thought. It would do nothing to make him stronger, faster, or any smarter. It would just make him greener, not to mention the fact that he would look even more like the rest of the Wemmicks. Why would he ever want that when he certainly already knows that Eli made them all different for a reason?

When Punchinello quits visiting Eli on a regular basis, he doesn’t think a painted nose is so foolish any longer. Now more than ever, Punchinello needs his maker to say that he will always help Punchinello be who he was made to be. Like Punchinello, we all would like to fit in. Just to be accepted by the rest of the crowd. At times, that could mean we either have to act and look like the others, or risk rejection.

Punchinello’s hard earned lesson teaches the reader how important to be exactly who we were made to be, and why that even matters. The book helps you remember two things: there is one that is always going to help you be just you and you were made to be unique for a good reason.
