Megan McDonald is American author of children books. She is famously known for her series of books which focus on Judy Moody, a third-grade girl. The series is written for grade three and four. The author has also written lots of picture books for younger children and continues to write.
McDonald was born 1959 in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania to Mary Louise and John McDonald. She is the youngest of five girls, and this served as her inspiration for The Sisters Club. She graduated with a B.A degree in 1981 from Oberlin College and in 1985 she graduated with an M.L.S from University of Pittsburgh.
She started her career as a children’s librarian, working for Adams Memorial Library, Carnegie Library of Pittsburgh and Minneapolis Public Library. Her first novel Is This a House for Hermit Crab was inspired by her patrons always asking her to find a story that she had told children at a library.
McDonald is married to the love of her life Richard Haynes and resides in Sebastopol, California. Some of her novels have been adapted into films, for instance, Judy Moody and the Not Bummer Summer was adapted into a movie by the same name and premiered in 2011. The film was directed by John Schultz and featured Jordan Beatty who played the role of Judy Moody. Subsequently, McDonald wrote a television screenplay in collaboration with Kathy Waugh, award winning writer famously known for the television series Curious George, Arthur, and Big and Small.
Judy Moody
Judy Mood is the first novel in Judy Moody series by Megan McDonald. The books pick up by introducing us to Judy Moody a third-grade pupil struggling to find good mood while she deals with her school projects, her little brother, and the friendship as well.
The novel is divided into episodic chapters which are entertaining. The book tells the little protagonist started her third grade. Most of the young readers will sympathize with Judy moods and frustrations over the class project and her attempts at friendship from the paste-eating pupils. As a lead character, you will notice that Judy is a no girly girl, but rather she is opinionated and determined.
Her relationship with her smaller brother Stink is somehow divided between animosity and friendship and her friendship with her classmates is authentic. Plenty of the illustrations that the author attempts bring Judy personality to life. The book size and style combined with lots of kid humor makes it a great read for the readers who are getting started with chapter books.
One of the thing that you will appreciate about this novel is that the lead character, Judy is eventually portrayed in such a manner that she could serve as a role model for the teen girls. For instance, she wishes to be a doctor someday, and her role model is Elizabeth Blackwell, the first woman doctor in the USA. She collects original items such as Bad-Aids, scabs, dead moths and she is not afraid of holding toads. In other words, she is a realistic representation of 8/9-year-old girls. The author does an excellent job by using the first book in the series to introduce the readers to Judy via the Me Collage Project.
Judy Moody Gets Famous
In the second book in the Judy Moody series by Megan McDonald, we find Judy Moody desperately trying to be famous. Her classmate, Jessica Finch, had won a spelling bee, and in response, Judy saw that this had got Jessica fame and so she wanted the same as well. So she tries to make up a lie regarding an ancient cherry, she also attempts to have a pet that performs a trick and also efforts to break a world record, but unfortunately, this ends all wrong for the ambitious Judy and still does not make her famous.
One day, she accidentally steps on her friend’s finger and ends up breaking it. They take her friend to the hospital and while in the hospital she meets a girl who had undergone a heart transplant. While playing with the girl in the playroom, Judy notices that all the toys that the hospital had been all broken and ended up stealing the dolls and takes them home to repair them. Subsequently, she sends them back to the hospital anonymously so that the children at the hospital to play with.
Later an article is featured in the paper about a Phantom Doll Doctor, but Judy and her family know who did it but the hospital never does, and thus she becomes famous without her name having to be featured everywhere.
The second book in Judy Moody series by Megan McDonald is a great read for young readers. The novel has a great and vigorous message for teens about being famous and undertaking things that will benefit others and not for personal fame.
Judy Moody Saves the World
In the third series installment, Judy Moody returns, and this time she is ready to take on the world. It starts with the Strip contest, and the Judy dreams that she would one day see her very own bandage design used to cover thousands of scraped knees. However, when her Save the World idea only gets an recognition mention, Judy realizes that it is high time that she set her goals to something much bigger than anything else.
Class 3T is learning about the environment and the sorrounding, and Judy is happy to find out more about the damage of the endangered species, the rain forest, and her family nasty recycling habits. Now she is in a mood to get the planet back into shape. The third series installment is a representation of what kids are capable of doing. Judy hears about how the environment can change the world and then suddenly an opportunity comes up where Judy has the chance to create her own unique Crazy Strips Bandaid design hoping that she will emerge the winner of an of brand new roller blades. However, this changes when she later learns that her brother won the prize and thus came with another way to save the world.
This is an excellent and fun to read story for children and has a great moral lesson that shows the children can save the world despite how young they can be.
