Meik Wiking
Meik Wiking is the CEO of the Happiness Research Institute, research associate for Denmark at the World Database of Happiness, and is the founding member of the Latin American Network for Wellbeing and Quality of Life Policies.

He and his research outlets have been featured in over five hundred media outlets, which include: PBS News Hour, CBS, The Washington Post, Huffington Post, BBC, the Atlantic, The Guardian, the Times (London), and Monocle.

Meik has spoken at TEDx, and his books have been translated into more than 35 languages. Meik’s been called The Indiana Jones of Smiles and is probably the World’s happiest man by The Times.

The summer he researched “The Art of Making Happy Memories”, he and his girlfriend were visiting his dad, and he’d asked his dad to plan a “Tour de Wolf”. Because he finds that it’s important to revisit the place where events happened that’ll make you remember them better. It makes good sense, and good fun, to go on a literal walk down memory lane. Either your own or the memory lane of a loved one. A walk around Aarhus, the second largest city in all of Denmark. His dad moved there during the 60s and worked in advertising. Meik wanted to see where his dad lived, worked, and went to get drunk.

That afternoon, they visited the places where he worked, and walked his dad’s walk to work in the mornings.

Then they visited the Theatre Bodega where they’d go to have a pint and their dinner, the streets where the drivers would be waiting outside of the houses, shining the cars in their uniforms. And the pharmacy where his mom worked when his parents met. Meik recalled stories about how she hated the leeches and she was forced to call her boss “Sir Pharmacist”.

He’d heard many of these same stories before, however seeing the places that they took place made these stories get brought to more vivid life. And now some of these memories and stories that his dad are integrated into the shared memory of one lovely summer afternoon walking through Aarhus.

Written with that same warm tone as his phenomenal bestseller “The Little Book of Hygge”, this easy-to-understand tome is going to change the way you think about how you relate to each of your neighbors, the rituals around cooking and eating your dinner, and just when you should book your next vacation. “The Art of Making Memories: How to Create and Remember Happy Moments” is a non-fiction book that was released in 2019. What is the real secret to happiness? Great memories! This time around, Meik shows us exactly how to create memories which make life sweet in such a charming book.

Do you remember your favorite vacation? Your first kiss? The day that you graduated? Or the best meal that you ever had?

Memories are the cornerstones of our very identity, shaping how we act, who we are, and how we feel. Meik has learned that people are much happier if they hold a nostalgic and positive view of their past. However how do we make and keep the memories that bring us any sort of lasting joy?

“The Art of Making Memories” examines exactly how mental images are stored, made, and recalled in our brains, along with the “art of letting go”, why we tend to forget certain moments to make more room for deeper, and more meaningful ones. Meik uses interviews, real life experiments, data, and global surveys to explain the nuances of nostalgia and all the different ways that we form memories around our experiences and recall them. Along the way, it reveals the power that a “first time” has on our recollections, and why a piece of music, a taste, or a smell can unexpectedly conjure up a moment from the past. Meik, ultimately, shows us how we each can create much warmer memories which will stay with us for years to come.

Combining Scandinavian forthrightness with his signature charm, and full of infogrpahics, photographs, and illustrations, and featuring some “Happy Memory Tips”, this is an inspiration meditation and practical handbook that is filled with ideas to help everybody that picks it up to make the memories which will bring us joy throughout our entire lives.
