Mel Odom is a popular author born in 1957 and best known for producing novelizations of well-known movies and television series.
+Biography
Mel Odom writes science fiction and fantasy. The author attended Byng High School in Oklahoma and East Central University. Graduating with a degree in English, Odom has an extensive bibliography, which is surprising seeing as he doesn’t exactly write full-time.
The author is also a teacher at a Writing Program at the University of Oklahoma.
+Literary Career
Odom graduated from high school in 1976. By 1988, he had sold his first book. For the next ten years, he wrote at an alarming rate, producing dozens of books in the process. Though none of them made any real splash, at least until he finally introduced ‘Forgotten Realms’ to readers in 1998. He then moved on to the ‘Threat from the Sea’ series, climbing in status and renown as a result.
Mel Odom is described as a science fiction and fantasy writer. However, the author has explored so many fields and aspects within those two genres that it isn’t surprising to find that his bibliography has such broad appeal.
From game-based fiction to horror, action, adventure and even comics, Odom has experimented with almost every facet of science fiction and fantasy, and he is bound to venture into even more unique territories as the years go by.
Where his books have failed to find the right target, his novelizations of movies like Blade, xXX, and Tomb Raider have allowed him to capitalize on a pre-existing fan base. His original novels of shows like Buffy the Vampire Slayer have proven particularly popular, spreading his name into corners of the world that might have otherwise never read his work.
Those readers who are not all that familiar with Mel Odom’s body of work have come to appreciate him for fantasy novels from which he has garnered more critical acclaim than his action, adventure and science fiction works.
People speak frequently of ‘The Rover’, a fantasy novel that took the Alex Award home in 2002. The book was appreciated for targeting adult readers even while appealing to younger audiences. Comparisons with the Lord of the Rings were quite rife at one point, specifically comparisons with the world that J.R.R Tolkien created. If winning the hearts and minds of hardcore fantasy enthusiasts and even movie and Television fanatics wasn’t enough, Odom went so far as to entice Christian readers with his spin-off of the ‘Left Behind’ series.
Mel Odom is a very well-rounded writer. He seems determined to try his hand at as many aspects of the literary arena as possible, though he still restricts his efforts to the science fiction and fantasy genres.
Mel Odom has a wife and five children.
+Exodus
2038 finds London in ruins. The once great city is no more. The world is no longer what it was, not since a gash was torn through the fabric of reality, joining with the darkened sky to bring about the dawn of a new era.
Demons now walk the earth, and they are every bit the nightmare humans envision. Mankind is forced to go underground in order to survive.
However, not everyone was completely caught aware when the world ended.
Some saw the advent of the darkness and the opportunity it would present to change man’s standing on the food chain. And now they have begun to emerge from the shadows, coming together, combining magical spells with futuristic weapons to bring the demons to heel.
There was a time when all anyone could talk about was the Hellgate/London MORPG. However, the hype for the concept has since faded, and you do not need to understand the game in order to read this book.
Mel Odom is one of those authors that has little patience for slowly easing readers into his world. Rather, he throws readers right into the mayhem and madness of London on fire and in the process of being invaded by monsters.
Standing up to the demons are the Templar, knights that use futuristic technology to fight on behalf of mankind. Odom quickly drags readers into the various Hellgate territories even while pursuing the stories of a Knights Templar struggling against impossible odds and a young man with powers he doesn’t quite understand.
Odom does a great job of blending science fiction and fantasy. His world definitely comes to life, though the pace can get somewhat erratic at times. The characters are interesting enough to explore, especially their backgrounds and the destinies that await them. One has to appreciate Odom for writing a story that maintains such incredible tension from the beginning to the end.
+Crossings (Buffy the Vampire Slayer)
After the death of their mother, Buffy and Dawn struggle to find a semblance of normalcy. Buffy doesn’t want to become the parent that she knows Dawn needs. It doesn’t help that the two keep fighting.
It is probably because of her personal distractions that Buffy fails to notice the bizarre behavior overtaking the video-game enthusiasts around her. When one of Xander’s friends goes a little crazy outside a theater, Anya and Xander decide to investigate. They trace all the strange goings-on of the town to a new video game.
It falls on Buffy to solve the mystery and save Sunnydale from a demon from an alternate universe.
This book is a novelization of the ‘Buffy the Vampire Slayer’ Television show, and it should satisfy the cravings and desires of fans of the Joss Whedon creation. The book tells a story set within Season Five of the show.
Things pick up shortly after Joyce Summers’ death. Buffy has to deal with a new video game that seems to be turning beta testers insane. Mel Odom does a great job of capturing the spirit of the Television Show.
All the characters are perfectly represented, with Odom translating their unique voices from the small screen to paper. The combination of Virtual Reality Gaming and Demons is a perfect fit for the Buffy universe. The fact that the book’s cover features Anya and Xander is a little misleading, though.
The characters do not have nearly as large a role as the book cover might suggest.
