One among the initial novels written by Melanie Dickerson includes the very famous ‘The Healer’s Apprentice’, which was published in the year 2010 by the Zondervan publishers. The novel is based on the lives of the main characters, Rose Roemer, Lord Hamlin and Lord Rupert Gerstenberg. The plot of the novel is set in Saxony, Germany during the time of 1386. The novel starts with the introduction of Rose Roemer, who gets appointed at the Hagenheim Castle as a healer’s apprentice. She is basically the daughter of a woodcutter and the opportunity of becoming an apprentice at the Castle seems very rare for a woodcutter’s daughter. Even though Rose does not feel the easiness in dealing with blood and wounds, she is determined to prove her worth and make everyone believe that she can be a capable healer’s apprentice.

She does not have much choice as she would have to return home and marry the aging bachelor that her mother has chosen for her, if she fails to prove her capability. The guy is disgusting and bloated merchant, who make Rose feel ill whenever she sees the sight of him. Soon, the future Duke of Hagenheim, Lord Hamlin gets injured and it is Rose, who is chosen to attend him and heal his wounds quickly. As she begins to work on his wounds in order to heal them, she experiences certain motions that she had never felt before. She gets attracted towards Lord Hamlin but somehow manages to keep herself from him. Rose often wonders if Lpord Hamlin also feels the same way. However, the two are forbidden to fall in love with each other as Lord Hamlin is about to get married to a mysterious young woman who is kept away from the sight of others. Saddened by the turn of events in her life, Rose hopes that things turn in her favor.

As her life spins with confusion, she must take the first step and begin her journey to discover her true self and meet her destiny. The novel went on to win some prestigious awards like the OKRWA National Award for the Best First Book in the year 2010. It was also nominated for the Christy Award under the Young Adult category in the year 2011. Another novel written by Melanie Dickerson was titled ‘The Fairest Beauty’ and was published by the Zondervan publishers in the year 2013. Just like the first novel, this novel too is set in the Medieval Europe during the time of the fourteenth century. The novel deals with the lives of the central characters named Gabe, Valten, Sophie and Lord Hamlin. The opening line of the novel reads, A daring rescue, A difficult choice, which gives the idea of love and hardships that the characters face in the novel. The plot of the novel opens up with the introduction of Sophie, who seems pretty unhappy because of her jealous stepmother. She desperately wants to get away from her and believes that escaping is the only way that she can be happy in her life.

Soon, everything turns upside down when a young man called Gabe comes to meet Sophie from the Hagenheim Castle. He tells her that she is betrothed to his elder brother. Sophie sees the opportunity as her only chance to get freedom, but does not feel like believing Gabe in relation to her safety. Gabe had gone to meet Sophie without the consent of his parents, who seem to be worried. He was fascinated by the looks and inner beauty of Sophie, however, he knew that she was his elder brother’s future wife and that he was also going to marry someone else. Hence, there was no question of romance between the two. Later, they reach the Cottage of the Seven to find any help. There they realize that their feelings towards each other had grown. They have to get past the difficult task of protecting themselves from the dangers around them as well as from developing a romantic relationship between themselves.
