The Affairs of the Falcons is the debut full length fictional novel from a phenomenal new author in the literary world, Melissa Rivero. If you love interesting stories that are full of details and color and show you a new world, then check out this intriguing premiere story from this author!

By picking up this novel, readers get to meet Ana Falcon for the first time. She is married to Lucho, her husband, and they have two children together. The kids are still very young, and the couple have decided that they need to do what they have to in order to get out of the country for good.

Ana and Lucho live in Peru with their children, but it is becoming increasingly clear that they cannot stay there forever. It will end up being far too dangerous to remain in their home country of Peru due to the political as well as economic problems and strife that are going on there. Staying only means that they are risking things getting worse and running into real problems, such as starvation or violence.

Ana and Lucho simply cannot take the chance and stay in Peru. They have to look for a new life wherever they can. This is a story about a woman and a man that are willing to do whatever they can in order to provide for their children and keep their family going in a strange new place where they don’t know all of the rules.

They are able to make it to New York and have a shot at starting a new life. It is the start of the nineties and things are going well with the American economy. But the fact of the matter is that Ana does not have the same opportunity to take advantage of the current state of prosperity that so many others seem to be experiencing. She has come over as undocumented and this is a true fact that is getting in the way of her economic chances at making it.

The fact that Ana is undocumented means that her choices are limited. Her family has less opportunity and as a result Ana ends up becoming in debt to Mama, which is what the loan shark calls herself. She also works her job at a factory and is quickly becoming exhausted by the long length of the shifts working there. It is not an easy job.

Everything is hard and making a life for her family in the United States is not easy for Ana. She would have hoped that the country would have been the answer to all of the problems that they left behind in Peru, but it seems that everyday life is not easy here for those who have immigrated and especially those who are undocumented.

She also has to deal with other social factors and the fact that they do not have their own home. Ana has to contend with the criticism that she is getting from the cousin of her husband. He is making it more than clear that the family may not be staying there much longer in the spare room. Sooner or later they are going to have to vacate the room and find someplace to live.

On top of that, the situation is stirring up attention from the loan shark’s husband as well. Mama’s spouse is becoming involved and the pressure from the situation is quickly starting to be unmanageable. Ana feels the stress of the situation and is starting to feel very desperate about the entire thing. She wants to keep her family together, but she finds herself in just as risky a position as she did back in South America.

Her husband is now having dreams that they will be able to go back to Peru. For her part, Ana is wondering whether it will ever be safe or prosperous for their family in any country. It seems that no matter where they go, the odds are stacked against them. She is also having to struggle with the memory of the demons that she thought she was able to finally leave behind.

Ana has a deep determination to try and do what she can to make it in the United States. Whatever she can do to put herself and her family ahead without damaging her soul, she is going to do. Lucho wants to go back, and she wants to remain. However, her energy and her spirit are admittedly running thin. How much more can she stand? How is she going to be able to make sacrifices again and again without being able to fold in and give up?

Ana wants to do what she can to provide for her children and protect her husband and the kids in the process. Just what lines will she be willing to step over in order to do it? How many sacrifices is she capable of before she finally breaks?

Life is tough in this new world, and Ana is already in a sticky situation. If she doesn’t play it right, her new life could go up in flames. Will she be able to make it in America? Or is going back to Peru in defeat to face what remains there inevitably going to be her only option?

This is a fascinating novel about one woman’s strength, a determination to create a life, and the immigrant experience in America. Check out this book and catch all of the magic of this debut work from Rivero for yourself!
