Melissa Yi
Melissa Yi is an emergency doctor, working ten to fourteen hour shifts, at two different hospitals, 24/7. She once worked in Ontario and Quebec, however the licensing fees became too much. And the state of Quebec medicine can be challenging, like she’s mentioned a time or two in the “Hope Sze” series.

As a writer, she writes about whatever strikes her fancy. Medicine-wise she will write about everything from articles for the Medical Post to medical mysteries. However for fiction, she writes everything from suspense to romance to picture books. From baby books to werewolves.

A few things that Melissa loves include Fringe festivals, eating (both quantity and quality), Earth, yoga, justice, traveling, and reading.

“Code Blues” is the first novel in the “Hope Sze Medical Mystery” series and was released in the year 2011. Dr. Hope Sze arrives in Montreal with three simple goals. One is to try pain au chocolat, two is survive her family medicine residency, and three is to go on a date sometime in the next two years. Then she finds a doctor’s body in the locker room.

She attempts to solve his murder, and two men dive right in to help her. The one guy that has charm to burn, and the guy that makes her melt doesn’t have an alibi. Code Blues. Because medicine can be murder.

Readers found themselves becoming captivated right from the beginning, and were enmeshed in this medical drama that kept them up nights. From Yi’s vivid descriptions, it is easy to imagine the dilapidated hospital in Montreal and the conflicted people, who struggle with relationships and boundaries. The murder of one beloved doctor sets into motion a riveting narrative that takes quite a few unexpected turns and twists. Hope is a relatable character: self-doubting, makes bad choices, and hopeful, yet is loyal.

“Notorious D. O. C.” is the second novel in the “Hope Sze Medical Mystery” series and was released in the year 2011. A mom that burns for justice. The one doctor that cannot say no. And the killer that is lying in wait.

Dr. Hope Sze solved her very first murder case just a week ago, and almost got strangled for it. Now she only wants to pass her psychiatry rotation. No more Sherlock Holmes-ing for her. Ever again.

Until her first psych patient tells her that her daughter is dead and that someone killed her. Hope just can’t walk away from this grieving mom. Yet how can she solve a murder that has stumped Montreal’s police department for the past eight years? Sifting through this cold case, she recruits a couple of intelligent and hot guys to their cause, one is a doctor that might represent her future and the other is her ex-boyfriend. But while they draw ever-closer to the truth, the murderer shifts out of the shadows.

This is one psychopath that has been waiting eight long years to kill again. Now Hope has to protect both herself, as well as two innocent men and a mom that yearns for retribution.

“Terminally Ill” is the third novel in the “Hope Sze Medical Mystery” series and was released in the year 2013. Magic? Dr. Hope stays away from magic. However when “Elvis the Escape King” chains and nails himself into a coffin and lowers himself down into Montreal’s St. Lawrence River, he’s unable to break free. So Hope restarts his heart and saves him. Now Elvis is demanding to know who it was that sabotaged his stunt.

Hope hung her amateur detective badge up two months prior, so that she could tend to cancer patients on palliative care. Her only cases are case studies on over-stuffed emergency rooms and pain. Which gets a little bit boring. She could escape from Montreal at any time now. She could transfer to Ottawa to join Ryan, her beloved ex-boyfriend. It would mean an end to unspeakable Montreal drivers and the stymied medical care. No more working with Dr. Tucker, an infuriating yet charming man.

Hope the Escape Artist could afford to act generous. As a parting gift to Montreal, the city of murderers and festivals, she might be able to help Elvis out. Just asking some questions isn’t going to hurt anybody. Right?

“Stockholm Syndrome” is the fourth novel in the “Hope Sze Medical Mystery” series and was released in the year 2015. One woman in labor. Two doctors. One murderer.

A killer has infiltrated the obstetrics ward of one Montreal hospital right before Christmas, taking a pregnant woman and a resident doctor hostage at gunpoint. Dr. Hope Sze struggles to deliver her patient’s baby with death in the air and blood on the floor.

When Dr. Tucker attempts to rescue their small crew, just to end up being hostage material with them, Hope’s heart may break, even before the kidnapper can drill a bullet right through her skull.

“Human Remains” is the fifth novel in the “Hope Sze Medical Mystery” series and was released in the year 2017. When Dr. Hope Sze attends an Ottawa stem cell lab for a peaceful month of research, she finds a dead guy in the snow. He is but the first in a series of corpses, both at home and around the entire globe. This time, the killer doesn’t know any conscience or borders.

Hope has to extricate all of them, as she is caught between the guy that saved her life, and the one that helps her rebuild it, and the murderer on an intercontinental rampage.

“Cain and Abel” is the first novel in the “Gone Fishing” series and was released in the year 2014. Wanted: some inner peace. Signed, Hope Sze, the “Dective Doctor” that is sick of solving murders.

Hope has successfully gotten out of the crime-ridden city of Montreal. Gone fishing with her father for his birthday. Long gone girl, trading in sirens for crimson maple leaves and misty lakes.

It is set to be a perfect family fun day, until her mom, who is never the sharpest scalpel in the neighborhood, drags crazy uncle Leonard, turning Black Donald Lake into a very dark place.
