Michael A Stackpole is a graphic novelist, game designer, screenwriter, podcaster, computer game designer, and award-winning novelist. Stackpole was born to Janet and Jim Stackpole in 1957 in Wasau Wisconsin, though he only spent six months there before his parents moved the family back to Vermont as his father was doing his residency in the state. His parent had two other children in Kerin who would become a lawyer, and Patrick who would become a military officer. The varied careers in his family mean he has access to the best of military, legal, and medical advice for his novels. As a teenager, his rebellion against his parents was getting a transistor radio on which he listened to Boston Bruins hockey games when he should have been doing his homework. In 1975, he graduated from Rice Memorial High School before he got his bachelor’s in History from the University of Vermont. By 1977, he had written his debut gaming project that he would then sell to Flying Buffalo Incorporated. A few years later, he moved to Arizona as he wanted to enjoy the sunny climate and Mexican food. For most of his adult life, he has been living in Arizona except for a few months when he consulted for Coleco Industries in Hartford, Connecticut.
Since 1977, he worked for several gaming companies as the designer of role-playing games. He was also engaged in the writing of industry magazine articles over the years. During this time, there were allegations by the likes of Patricia Pulling and several players that said that people were being driven to suicide, murder, and Satanism that they believed were inserted into the game “Dungeons & Dragons.” They believed that these were occult elements intentionally inserted into the game and maybe even part of a massive demonic ritual abuse scheme. Stackpole decided to research the legal cases where death or injury had been attributed to the game. His research found the evidence provided was very weak. He showed that even if the results showed any links to the games, the research showed that people who played role-playing games tended to be less suicidal or violent than the general public. By 1980, he was working for Interplay Productions and Coleco, where he designed the best-selling popular game titled “Bard’s Tale III.”
Michael A Stackpole’s debut fiction was “Talion: Revenant,” a fantasy fiction novel that he finished writing in 1986 though the manuscript he had written would not get accepted for publishing until 1997. According to the editors at Bantam Books, the manuscript at 175,000 words was too long given that he was an unknown author. Nonetheless, they asserted that it was an engaging story though they stalled on publishing it for more than a decade. It was not until 1997 that Anne Lesley Groell reworked the manuscript and got the novel published. In 1987 he got a job with FASA and it was during this time that he began writing the novels with a BattleTech universe setting and it was not long before he was a bestselling author in the genre. Some of his novels set in the BattleTech universe would later be used as the inspiration for an animated series aired on TV. Given that he was one of the most popular authors in fantasy fan fiction, Bantam Books contracted him to write several novels set in the Star Wars Universe. He has also written several fantasy and science fiction titles such as the “Tunnels and Trolls,” “Dark Conspiracy,” “Realms of Chaos,” “DragonCrown War,” “Age Of Discovery,” “Merlin Bloodstone Mystery,” “Trick Molloy Mysteries,” “Crown Colonies,” “Homeland Security Services,” “In Hero Years” among several single standing novels. Most of his novels break conventions of the genre and introduce elements such as firearms that some may not deem a positive development. Given his contributions to the fantasy and science fiction genre, Stackpole got a main asteroid belt named in his honor.
“The Dark Glory War” by Michael A. Stackpole is set in a time of war and prophecy, where four young men come of age. It is a thrilling story set in a world that has to deal with a seemingly invincible enemy. It is the Moon Month, a sacred season of the year when four young men are expected to wear the masks that would mark them out as initiates into adulthood. It is a time of romance, festival testing, ritual, and a celebration all rolled into one. But for Hawkins Tarrant and his friends Nay, Rounce, and Leigh, they find that the test has become a desperate struggle for survival. They have to deal with the advance force of an invading army that is set to overrun Oriosa their homeland. The turning point in their lives will come when they come across a legendary weapon that gives the wielder so much power that they become almost invincible. But the magic weapon soon becomes more of a curse than a blessing as it signals the start of a catastrophic battle with prehistoric foes. In the face of terrible battles and calamitous sorceries, the youths will finally attain manhood though death may come first.
Michael A Stackpole’s “Fortress Draconis” is set in the city of Yslin that was once upon a time one of the greatest human cities. It had been devastated and now has the Dimandowns a dark heart at its center. When an orphaned young thief from the city tries to show his worth to his master by stealing some valuable from his neighbors he finds himself entangled in a web of prophecy. He also meets a shadowy human warrior named Kedyn’s Crow and a Vorgquelf named Resolute who seeks to redeem his home in the islands that had been taken away from him. The two believe Will will be critical in the fight against the northern tyrant named Chytrine that had made herself the empress. But not everyone believes in Will in a world ton by magic and war as they are involved in their internecine struggles. Only Chytrine is clever enough to see that Will could change everything and thus she sends her best people to destroy the man. Yet even as he is tested, there has arisen a new generation of warriors ready to do everything in their power to right the wrongs of the past.
“When Dragons Rage” by Michael A Stackpole is the unforgettable story of a world divided by desire, war, magic, and betrayal. The tyrant Chytrine has sent her armies North in the quest to take over the world using a campaign of sorcery and bloodshed. Kingdoms and cities are getting toppled while her agents are actively looking for the DragonCrown that would make her invincible once it is found. The Prince of Okrannel, the determined and beautiful Alexia struggles to save a mysterious human warrior named Kedyn Crow that had been accused of treachery. In her quest, she finds help from a motley crew that includes the exiled Vorquel named Resolute who is looking for revenge and a mage named Kerrigan Reese who potential is yet to be realized and an orphaned thief from Yslin who may be an innocent victim or the fulfillment of an old prophecy. Alexia and her allies will have to draw upon all their magic and courage if they are to defeat the tyrant.
