Michael Bond is a British children fiction author born in 1926. He is best known for his series of children fiction stories called Paddington Bear, and he published his debut novel in 1958. The author was raised in a reading environment, and that might have inspired him to become a writer. Bond’s father worked in a post office as a manager. He schooled in Presentation College which he did not like because it was his mother’s idea to go there. Although his parents wanted him to go to university, he stopped education at the age of 14 when the Second World War was going on.

He worked in the Royal Air Force and Middlesex Regime of the British army. Michael Bond began writing in 1945 and sold his first story to London Opinion Magazine. He had never liked writing children stories until his agent advised him to start a play for the children after writing several short stories and radio plays. The author wrote short films which include; Simon’s Good Deed and Napoleon Day Out which were shown on the television.

For writing good children literature, bond was selected as the OBE in 1997 and as a Commander of the Order of the British Empire in 2015. He was awarded an Honorary Doctor of Letters in July 2007

A Bear Called Paddington

A Bear Called Paddington is the first book in the Paddington Bear series. The book tells a charming story of Paddington bear who goes to a foreign country without the knowledge of how things work there, but Brown’s family due to their kindness helps him. The couple finds the bear at the Paddington station where he was alone sited on a suitcase holding his hat trying to figure out what to do next after traveling in a lifeboat from Peru to a strange land and surviving on marmalade. The bear’s aunt, who is living in the home of elderly bears, sends him to England hoping that life would be better for him there. The Brown’s take him to their home, feed him, take care of him and assist him when faced by challenges. He has good behavior and is fluent in English which makes many people like him. The bear writes letters in ink, eats marmalade until his stomach is full and interacts with different people. He also participates in a painting competition which he emerges the winner. Although the bear causes some disasters in the house, Mr. and Mrs. Brown see life with more adventurous when the bear is around as compared to earlier days; they have even become more close and stronger than before.
Children and adults can read the book both, and despite that, it was written many years back the story is More About Paddington still relevant and fresh up to date.

More about Paddington

More about Paddington is the second book in the Paddington Bear series which gives more information about the bear. The bear is now settled in the Brown’s home, and we see him celebrating Guy Fawkes Day and Christmas Day by doing some shopping, tries to decorate, doing photography by taking pictures with his old fashioned camera and acting as a detective. Mrs. Bird the housekeeper washes Paddington whenever he gets dirty. Even though he is not at his home, he does not complain much, and he uses the situation at hand to enjoy himself.

The story is charming and truly delightful to read, and Paddington is a likable character who forgives easily whenever he causes troubles. When he messes up a room by putting paste everywhere, he cleans up and apologizes to his hosts. When the bear gets himself in some situation and things always work out in his favor for instance when he untangles the clothing line in the department store and steals; a rich man treats him by offering him a limo ride trip to a store for sweets. Paddington drawings are adorable, and his small frame which looks funny makes you laugh when you think of the troubles he starts. He causes disturbance for the policemen, the cantankerous, sales assistant and Mr. Curry, a needy neighbor.

The book at the end teaches you some British traditions through Paddington and leaves you laughing louder as you flip pages.

Paddington Helps Out

Paddington Helps Out is the third book in the Paddington Bear series where we come across the adventures enjoyed by the bear. The loveable bear experiences first time activities that he has not experienced before they include; a tour to the river, visiting the cinema hall, auction house, launderette and going out for dinner at a high-class restaurant. He also attempts cooking where he ends up chased from the kitchen. He tries making a magazine rack, and while building it, he ends up destroying the kitchen table.

A character named Mr. Curry, Brown’s neighbor, is nice and patient, and the reason why Paddington tempers with his tools is that he has never explained to the bear how bidding is done. Same to the laundry room, the workers there have been with him for quite some time, and they are aware that leaving Paddington there on his own could lead to troubles, but they leave him where he causes some damage.

The bear tries his best to help and take care of the Browns when they get sick by cleaning up the house and preparing meals for them. Even though Paddington’s attempts are good, they end up becoming disastrous, and he is not afraid to try others again since his intentions are good and inspire the people around him although at first, he frustrates them.

The whole story is funny and interesting especially when Paddington gets into troubles which lead to Misunderstandings and some light quarrels which end up not too bad, but he remains still curious about everything. The bear’s adventures turn into misadventures since he seems not to stay away from troubles every time he tries something new. All his mishaps turn out to be funny to read, and you can’t help following the story keenly.
