Michael Marshall Smith is an English author of fiction, bestselling novelist, and screenwriter. He was born in Cheshire in 1965. His first novel was titled Only Forward and was the winner of two big literary awards. His second novel was titled Spares. He works on screenplays for feature films and has worked on the BBC adaptation of Weaveworld. Michael Marshall Smith has not only worked in the writing world and television world with a pilot television series– he also has done two comedy series on the radio.
Smith’s novel One of Us were actually both optioned to become films by Warner Brothers. The books of the Straw Men trilogy were bestsellers on an international level. His stories are also in two volumes.
Raised in the United States and the UK, his parents were academics and his family moved to Illinois at a young age. They moved when Smith was young to South Africa, then Australia, and then again to England. He went to the Chigwell School and later went to King’s College at Cambridge.
He became a writer and performer under the name of Michael Rutger for a cult hit BBC Radio 4 series. He also wrote material for the Dare to Believe, a comedy, from 2002 to 2004. His first short story won a British Fantasy Award.
His second novel was Spares and DreamWorks wanted to make it into a movie. However, even though they bought the rights they ultimately lapsed. However, DreamWorks did make a movie called The Island starring Ewan McGregor and Scarlett Johannson but Michael Marshall Smith did not think it would be worth it to go after legal action for the similarities in the plot. He does not think a movie based on Spares will be made now, however.
His short story was announced to be made into a feature film in 2006. Smith was both a producer and a co-screenwriter for the movie. Michael Marshall Smith launched his own small virtual press in 2012 called Ememess Press. He also has a television series coming out on BBC America called Intruders. It is based on his 2007 novel titled The Intruders.
He has also written several other successful standalone novels. He is also the author of the Emermess Collection, which has 9 issues in it. He uses a pen name of Michael Marshall when it comes to his modern novels and Michael Marshall Smith as his pen name for novels in the genre of horror and science fiction. His works have appeared in chapbooks and he has written several novellas and his short stories are included in several anthologies. Michael Marshall Smith currently lives with his wife and his son in Santa Cruz, California.
Only Forward came out in 1994. It involved the main character of Stark. He is someone that lives in The City. That is what the huge conglomeration of neighborhoods are called. They all have their own curiosities and govern themselves, and Stark is a troubleshooter. He lives in Colour. This neighborhood has the unique quirk of having computers that coordinate the street light colors to match those of the clothes that the people are wearing.
Next to Colour is the neighborhood of Sound. There you cannot make any noise; it is expressly forbidden. People there have to be totally silent. Nearby is Ffnaph and people there do the unique thing of spending all of their time jumping on trampolines and doing their best to try and touch the sky. Then in the neighborhood of Red, it seems like just about anything can happen and a lot of the time it does. That place is total chaos.
Close to all of the neighborhoods because, it is at the center is the neighborhood that is, of course, called the Centre. This is somewhere where the people live and are very cunning. The community there is made up of Actioneers. They would backstab their own grandmother to get ahead. All they want in life is to achieve, and they are divided into different areas and subsections that focus on things like results (all that matters in that subsection).
He has to find a man that he thinks has been kidnapped– Actioneer extraordinaire Fell Alkland. Stark is probably one of the only people around that could find him, but in order to do this, he must go to the weird places of the city and all the different neighborhoods. On top of that, he must face the secrets of his past that he has been avoiding facing for a very long time. Can Stark face up to his demons and save Fell Alkland or will they both fall prey to the strangeness of the city? Read Only Forward for yourself and find out!
Smith’s second novel is called Spares. The main character in this second novel from Smith is named Jack. He lives in a world that is advanced to the point where people are doing more than just thinking ahead when it comes to organ transplants. They’re actually making clones of themselves that walk around with their parts. And if you ever need a kidney, they’re there.
Clones are the health insurance of the future. But little do these doppelgangers know that they were made specifically to provide body parts for wealthy people that look just like them– but got there first. Without the need for the security blanket of their organs, these clones wouldn’t even exist.
It’s a strange system, and most of the clones have no idea of their true purpose or reason for existing. Jack Randall is as far down the burned out chain as you can be and has dropped out of nearly everything known to man. He is overdrawn and tired of life but works on Spares Farm as a caretaker, jaded to the max. When he finds himself on the lam along with a spare clone, he finds that he just might still have a choice in life and have a chance to make a difference at last. This thrilling science fiction novel is well worth a read, so pick it up and check out the full story for yourself!
