Michael Phillips is a bestselling American author that has written several dozen fiction and nonfiction books. Phillips is a staunch Christian whose faith has drastically impacted the books he’s written.
Phillips is known more for the effort he has injected into trying to revive interest in George MacDonald, a 19th Century Scottish author than he is for his own works.
+Biography
Michael Phillips was born in 1946 to Denver Phillips, a WWII Air Corps Veteran; his mother was Eloise. Phillips took his first breath in Arcata, a small northern California University town. That is also where he spent most of his childhood.
His resume includes stints at Humboldt State College where he not only pursued athletics (Track and Field) but also graduated with a degree in Physics, Math, and Languages.
Phillips also pursued further studies in Education and history, though his childhood and young adult life were impacted more by his religious ancestry than anything else.
Michael Phillips can trace his line back to Quaker Immigrants in New Jersey in the 1600s. The men and women in his household followed the Protestant tradition when the author was growing up.
By the time Phillips was old enough to make his own decisions with regards to religion, the charismatic movement had begun to take root in his community. That was in the 1960s.
Even though he had such a strong Christian lineage, Michael Phillips was already a young adult in his twenties when he first had a personal encounter with God. Phillips was in Germany in 1969 when he read the literary work of Thomas Kelly, a Quaker.
The words of Kelly awakened in Phillips a desire to pursue a stronger relationship with Jesus Christ. He also concluded that God was driving him to pursue a very specific direction.
Phillips began to pray diligently, asking God to make clear his purpose in life. During that period, the author read a wide variety of religious books each of which strengthened his faith and showed him how best to live up to the standards of the God he served.
After seeing how drastically his own life had been changed by the written word, Phillips eventually came to the startling realization that his future lay in the publishing industry. He realized that he had been given a gift for opening the eyes of Christians and non-Christians alike to the important things of God via his writing.
And he was fortunate to encounter a woman in Judy Carter who believed in his vision and encouraged him to seek the purpose God had placed on his heart. Judy was born in 1949 to WII veterans. She also had deep Quaker roots.
So she was best placed to understand and relate to Michael Phillips’ struggles with Christianity. The pair grew up at a time when being Christian wasn’t hip or cool. Christian youth groups were small and anyone who identified themselves as a Christian, especially in school, often encountered social exile.
Despite these hurdles, both Judy and Phillips found faith in God. Then they found one another at Humboldt State. Realizing that they both shared a desire to spread the word of God, they spearheaded several activities at Humboldt State College which created a Christian evangelical culture on the school grounds.
They married in 1971 and eventually took steps to open One Way Book Shop, an establishment of humble beginnings designed to provide Christian literature to students which eventually grew to become an essential component of the Humboldt County Christian Community.
Considering the effort he injected into exploring physics and research at an early age, it took him a while to change tracks and to find peace in teaching and missionary work.
Over time, Michael Phillips and Judy have become prominent members of the Global Christian Community.
Phillips’ foray into publishing began when his wife fell pregnant and he decided to write a book not only detailing her joys and trials during that time but also the birth of their twin sons.
But his true passion was always George Macdonald. Phillips discovered the author in the 1970s. Not only was he moved by Macdonald’s literary work but Phillips was shocked to learn that the ancient Scottish author’s fiction was completely inaccessible and unavailable.
Dismayed by the prospect of watching the works of such an inspirational author disappear from history, Michael Phillips made it his mission to reintroduce MacDonald’s work to the world.
He did this by editing older versions of the Victorian writer’s books and eliminating the heavy Scottish components, making them accessible to modern readers.
Besides cutting many of Macdonald’s books down in size and producing new editions of original Macdonald works that met contemporary publishing standards, Phillips also proceeded to produce his own original works which built upon the ideas of George Macdonald, not to mention emphasizing some of the author’s more relevant opinions.
It took Phillips more than two decades to drag George Macdonald back into the public conscious. This was as he wrote completely new fiction and nonfiction that pushed spiritual values which he believed were sorely lacking in contemporary fiction.
+The Heather Hills of Stonewycke
Maggie Duncan is a seventeen-year-old straddling the gulf between childhood and womanhood. She loves her father as much as any dutiful daughter would but she also hates the fervor with which he pursues money and power; fervor that has made him cruel.

Maggie hopes to find some solace in the arms of a man with a difficult past but even his love will prove ineffective in giving Maggie happiness unless she can learn to embrace forgiveness.
+Flight from Stonewycke

Correction and Thanks
I’m grateful for this great resource! It has helped me so many times not accidentally read a sequel out of order.
Correction: a number of reviewers on Amazon mention that Heather Song is the sequel to Angel Harp. Both are listed above as stand alone novels.
Thanks for the heads up Jon, much appreciated. I’ll update that right away.
I am looking for the first book when the little girl was running in the meadow, and lived a charm life, then all changed. I cannot remember the title of this early book, Thank You
Who gets this email? I hope it is the wonderful author I couldn’t put the Shenandoah Sisters down!!! I’ve read all my life and never found such a storyline
I struggle to keep my 98 yr old Mom with books on Audio since ahe has macular regeneration and was a voracious reader all her life. The first 2 books of this series have been recorded but, alas, the final 2 books have not been. She would Love this series. Is there anyway you can urge the recording of these last 2 books?! Thank you.
I also really enjoyed the Shenandoah Sisters Series. I am thrilled to have read them at the recommendation of a good friend at church. The author, Phillips, made this experience so real that I felt as though I could drive a buggy or ride a horse right up to Rosewood Plantation for a visit. As you maybe have guessed, my housework and cooking sure suffered!!!
I really enjoyed the Shenandoah Sisters series. I have read all four books twice.
Will there be a 5th book??? Like When Mayme marries Jeremiah. Or when Katie marries Deputy Paxton?
