Michael Wallace is one of America’s best selling authors with writings from different genres including mystery thrillers, suspense and science fiction series. He is best known for his entertaining The Righteous series, Devil’s deep and his science fiction works. Though he started writing stories from a very young age, Michael seriously started thinking about writing as a profession when he was 17 years old.

Early life

His passion for mystery and thriller was kick started at an early age of 12. His mother who worked as a volunteer in a local library saw him read books about dinosaurs after she discovered the boy’s love for pictures on the animal. He would make a book filled with dinosaur pictures where he would write the names of the dinosaurs painstakingly making sure that his spellings were correct. His mother would staple all these together and put them up his shelf. He also liked playing Dungeons and Dragons where at most times, he was the Dungeon master telling make-up stories to his friends,. This was preparing him for the story writing career that he now is in.

The Writing Career

Before he became a fully fledged writer, Michael Wallace did a couple of jobs. All the way from his college days, he did things to get a coin in his pockets. After school, he worked as a software engineer. In this job, he programmed simulators for nuclear submarines. He later on bought an inn in Vermont where he worked a couple of years. By then, he had started giving manuscripts of his works to agents for publishing. As the writing job proved rather promising, Michael left the inn and employed an inn-man as he himself became a full-time author.

Michael’s thriller and mystery series borrow a lot from his experiences in all through from childhood to his present life as an adult. In his childhood, at a tender age of eight, he got lost in the Fiery Furnace when he was hunting lizards. Caught up in a labyrinth of hoodoos and spires in Arch’s National Park, it dawned on him that he must have taken a wrong turn somewhere and he therefore backtracked his way only to come to a gorge that he had not seen before. He was tired, thirsty and dehydrated when the search party found him three hours later. Though the incident did not leave him any shaken with fear, it remained in his memory and was to reappear twenty-five years later as he wrote the first series of The Righteous that has a set up of Blister Creek, Utah. Here he sets up a sandstone labyrinth by the name Witch’s Warts that serves as a focal point of violence.

The place also reminds him of the adventures he and his father had. The two would go into the desert of Southern Utah armed with a guidebook to look for geodes. At one time, they went to a dry canyon and returned with 19th century medicine bottles that had turned lavender color because of the sun. The desert offered so much to discover all the way from arrowheads, topaz, potsherds, snakes and lizards.

At one time, Michael and his brother found a Gila monster that dangerously hissed to scare them off. The two tried to corner it into a can and it was only when they went to call their father that the venomous reptile ran away. This was much to the relief of the mother who was shaken at the thought of what would have befallen them if the reptile attacked. The two had captured a rattlesnake and kept it in a locked cage.

The Righteous series

The series is set in a polygamous cult in the Southern desert of Utah. It borrows a lot from Michael’s upbringing where he was raised in a small town in Utah from a Mormon family. Therefore, the series are religious thrillers more than anything else. Michael based his first book on the FDLS group that was marrying off their under-age girls. He puts his thoughts and feelings about religious views in the main character Jacob

In the first book, Jacob is sent to a medical college to become a doctor so as to come and service the town as their doctor. When he finally comes back, he is given a murder to figure out exactly what caused the death in the village. The villagers don’t want to bring law enforcers into the case since they are an enclosed society that loves to solve their issues internally. So, though they have their speculations about who could have killed, they ask Jacob, an insider to solve the case without having to call in the police.

His sister. Eliza who is barely 17 years is to be married off to an older guy. Though he strongly dislikes this, he is slowly involved in the community’s mindset and way of doing things that he accepts. In book one of The Righteous, Jacob becomes an integral part of his society and behaves, thinks like the rest of the villagers.

In book two however, he tries to pull himself and his wife out of this conservative community especially when his sister gets away from the community. This however is not an easy task. He has his doubts and has fully got immersed in the community’s way of doing things that disentangling himself is not an easy task.

Michael Wallace brings the main characters Jacob and Eliza as siblings chiefly from his family setting. He found himself in a large extended family whereby at each family gathering, he was getting introduced to more and more cousins that he lost count.

The Starship Blackbeard Series

Book one in the series revolves around a military captain James Drake who after fighting an alien race is unfairly sentenced to hard labor in a court ruling. He is a fugitive running away from the Lord Admiral Malthorne. As though that is not enough, a friend of his thinks that the accusations Drake is charged with are true and is therefore anxious to get him to book.

Drake flees. He leads his crew to fight smugglers and pirates to get to his ship. He will then return to Malthorne and destroy the incriminating evidence thereby clearing his name.

Works done

Apart from The Righteous and Starship Blackbeard series, Michael has done the The Devil’s Deep Series and Science &Fiction works. Michael’s works have received great literal acclaim with his readers praising his creativity and the thrill they get reading his works.

Michael is as interesting as the characters in his books. He describes his life as crazy. He has ever traversed the Sahara on a camel back, eaten a guinea pig, licked on his head by a skunk, smuggled refugees from a war-torn zone and milked a cobra off its venomous poison. He speaks English, French and Spanish. His The Righteous book that revolves around religious cults has had him being threatened by members of cults.

Michael loves exploring and discovering new things and experiences. This has greatly contributed to his works as a thriller writer. He does skiing and scuba diving. He has ever participated in a Dengue Fever vaccine study, all in the name of getting an experience of what it feels to be in the medical field. He loves traveling and doing things that will have his adrenaline raise.
