Michelle Hodkin was born and raised in South Florida USA, she attended college in New York and followed on to law school in Michigan. Michelle began to write her Mara Dyer series when she was twenty-seven, she sold the it aged twenty-eight and saw it published by Simon & Schuster Books for Young Readers when she was twenty-nine. The first book in Ms Hodkins series was titled ‘The Unbecoming of Mara Dyer’ which was swiftly followed by ‘The Evolution of Mara Dyer’ and now readers are awaiting the final in the trilogy which is currently being written and due out soon: ‘The Retribution of Mara Dyer’.

The Mara Dyer series is based on true events and personal experiences to the author. Overnight Michelle Hodkin says she turned from a lawyer to an author due to a client who came to her for legal assistance, regarding an accident her daughter had. The side of law they needed help with was not in Ms Hodkins field and so she couldn’t assist, however, she never forgot the case and over a year later something clicked where she felt that the girl needed to be found and have her story heard; Michelle describes this as a ‘lightening experience’ and she put pen to paper straight away. She was struck by the experience of seeing the girl for the last time, as they left, when she turned to look at Michelle and gave a look of a girl who is truly haunted; Ms Hodkin felt there was a lot more to this person and she wanted to know more.

Michelle Hodkin began writing and didn’t stop for several hours, the story came naturally and Mara Dyer came to life in the first book: The Unbecoming of Mara Dyer. To ensure her book was written well and had the correct psychological issues covered, Ms Hodkin researched many disorders such as PTSD as well as more life-long ailments like schizophrenia to justify her characters in the most appropriate manner. Of course, being a paranormal and haunting thriller, the characters do not suffer with anything in our world but for the essence of the story this had to be covered; and it had to be covered well with more of this coming through in the second book: ‘The Evolution of Mara Dyer’. Ms Hodkins says that she uses music to help her write and ‘nail the mood’. Speaking of the musician Fiona Apple, Ms Hodkins say’s that listening to her music while writing her books, especially the first in the series, really helped her at points when she experienced writers block. She would write with her iTunes playing to remind her of personal memories and feelings which could be incorporated through the characters in the book.

In the first book: ‘The Unbecoming of Mara Dyer’, the main character, Mara awakes in a hospital bed after suffering a tragic accident which took the lives of three of her friends; Jude, Claire and Rachel. Curiously though, Mara Dyer comes out of the accident physically unharmed. Following the accident Mara and her family decide to relocate to a new town, with the intention to put the traumatic events behind them – but it’s soon discovered that distance is not the answer. Mara begins to experience a catalogue of mysterious events all around her and she begins to wonder if there was more to the accident than simple unfortunateness; wrong place, wrong time. Mara starts to lose her sanity and see’s her world begin to crumble; people around her die, she witnesses ghosts, experiences blackouts, hallucinations and the world seems like it’s against her. Out of the shadows comes Noah, to follow is romance, passion and comfort for Mara in a world where that’s been seriously lacking.

The intense, mystery and twists between Mara and Noah, as well as Mara and the rest of the world becoming even more apparent in Michelle Hodkins second book: ‘The Evolution of Mara Dyer’. When penning her series Ms Hodkin says that she had no target audience in mind, but the sexiness, the paranormal activities and the intensity have been embraced by adolescent readers who are now the majority of Ms Hodkins fan base. The follow up is more fast paced and full of revelations, creepiness and romance to keep readers unable to put the book down. Maras sanity is really put to the test to the extent where even she has doubts about her mental state, you see her family come more into play with some relationships blossoming in a beautiful way such as that between Mara and Daniel; her older brother. Mara and Noah also become more well matched and their relationship is one which is mutually beneficial.

Michelle Hodkins writes for all, although the genre is primarily paranormal there’s many different leads such as romance, inspiration, hope and real life which will strike a chord with anyone. Ms Hodkins has been praised around the world for her writing abilities by many New York Times Best Sellers, MTV, Romantic Times and Booklist to name a few. Her recommendations mention words such as; Deep, dark, passionate, thrilling, captivating and funny.

Ms Hodkins is an author who communicates with her fans regularly, as well as her own website where she is contactable she is also a regular user of social networking sites such as Tumblr and Good Reads. Many authors can only be approached through managers or hired help but Michelle likes to interact with fans and readers; answer questions, welcome feedback and thank fans for their support.

There are currently talks about whether the series will be turned into a movie, this is something the author is greatly excited about although ultimately it won’t be her decision she has actors in mind for who she’d like to play the characters; saying that British actress Kaya Scodelario would be perfect in the role for Mara Dyer and that ‘tall British ‘floppy haired’ actors aren’t in short supply to suit the role of Noah’. Michelle Hodkin did have a lot to do with the trailer for the books, which has been greatly received worldwide, showing the main characters: Mara and Noah, in various states of embrace creating a feel of passion, intensity and romance which transpires through the pages of the novels.
