Dashner has penned a number of well-known books, many of which are popular with young adults and children. Bestsellers include his Maze Runner series.

There are many who have a special fascination for the Mortality Doctrine series. He also has become famous for his young adult fantasy series, The 13th Reality.

His 2008 novel, The Journal of Curious Letters, was one of the Borders Original Voices picks. He has been awarded The Whitney Award for Best Youth Fiction, for The 13th Reality. He also has been honored with the ALA Best Fiction for Young Adults, for Maze Runner.

In this article, we will be looking at the books in the Mortality Doctrine series, which began in 2013.

What These Books Have In Common

Like many other serial books that have a common character across all the books published under a single name, Mortality Doctrine also has a single character by the name Michael, but the story lines are different and deal with different situations. The one common thread is that they all target an audience of young adults and adolescents.

The series has received rave reviews from critics and book experts. Reader response has also been warm for all the books of the series.

The books in this series have been set in a technology which is hyper-advanced, dealing with extremely intelligent and ruthless cyberterrorists. They explore gaming elements beyond most people’s wildest dreams and imagination.

Michael is an avid gamer. As is the case with many gamers, he spends most of his time in the virtual world, rather than in the actual world. He is totally immersed, mind and body, in his virtual world.

Michael’s prodigious hacking skills help him come up with stunning solutions to various tight situations. He believes in breaking the rules; however, the rules were created for a reason, because technology when used improperly can lead to disastrous consequences. There is one gamer who has been bending the rules with murderous results, to say the least.

Here is a look at some of the Mortality Doctrine books that have been extremely well-received by readers.

The Eye of Minds

This book was released in 2013 and is the first by James Dashner under the Mortality Doctrine series. Published by Delacorte Press, the book revolves around a completely futuristic world.

The Eye of Minds focuses on the role played by a young gamer, Michael, who must stop a rogue hacker. The hacker’s objective is to cause destruction on a massive scale.

Michael and two of his friends, Sarah and Bryson, are accomplished and talented hackers. Their main objective is to track down a notorious cyberterrorist named Kaine.

Kaine is notorious for trapping people inside VirtNet, which contains various games including Lifeblood, a re-creation of real life. After becoming trapped, gamers often commit suicide by “coding out their Cores,” the virtual objects that differentiate between their Auras, or their virtual bodies, and their real-life bodies.

As the fast-paced plot progresses, it becomes a fascinating journey that keeps the readers on tenterhooks. The book has received reasonably good reviews from many journals and publications. It has been described as an “adrenaline rush for readers.”

The Rule of Thoughts

This is the second book under the Mortality Doctrine series and is a sequel to the first book, The Eye of Minds. Though Michael has been able to successfully complete the Path, he barely survived, and what he found at the end was not what he had expected. What he discovers about the cyberterrorist, Kaine, is shocking and more complex than expected. He must overcome the sinister master plan of Kaine, and the plan is what Mortality Doctrine all about.

The Game of Lives
Released in 2015, this is the sequel to The Rule of Thoughts and the third and final installment in The Mortality Doctrine series.

Michael, Sarah, and Bryson are now tasked with saving every person who uses the Virtnet from having their bodies stolen by tangents. They are still battling Kaine, but have a new villain as well. The only person who will be able to deal with putting the monster back in the box is Michael. He will need his friends’ help for that. The only problem is he isn’t sure which ones he can fully trust.

Conclusion

James Dashner, with his swashbuckling Mortality Doctrine series, has been able to win over the hearts and minds of millions of readers, particularly teens and young adults. Additionally, there are a number of other books by Dashner which are equally good. The Maze Runner books, in particular, are worthy of mention, with their gripping plots and interesting characters.
