Author Mur Lafferty was born July 25, 1973 and is based in Durham, North Carolina. Besides writing, she also makes award winning podcasts, which she started doing in late 2004. Lafferty has been inducted into the Hall of Fame for podcasters, and her longest running show is called I Should Be Writing. She won a Parsec for Best Novella Podcast she did for her novella called “Wasteland”.
She began her writing career writing for different role playing game companies, like White Wolf. She would write about games for many publications. “Playing for Keeps”, her podcast novel, was published in the year 2008.
Besides writing the “Afterlife” series, she also writes “The Shambling Guides” series.
Lafferty has won many awards for her work in podcasts and writing fiction and nominated for many more besides that. She won Best New Writer from John W. Campbell Award. She has also won Manly Wade Wellman Award in 2014 and 2015 for parts one and two in the Shambling Guides books.
The “Shambling Guides” stories came about when she was writing a print on demand book RPG about New Orleans, just after Hurricane Katrina in 2005, and all the proceeds to benefit the Red Cross.
She loves running, playing “World of Warcraft” and “Dragon Age”, practicing kung fu, and spending time with her husband (who is a geek too) and their daughter.
When she was about twelve years old, she began writing. It started when she read the “Swords” series by Fred Saberhagen, which gave her the first itch she had to write fan fiction. It was around this time she began a story that featured unicorns of different colors and every single best friend she had at the time. It has since been lost all this time to the ages.
As a writer, Lafferty was first influenced by Robin McKinley and Anne McCaffrey. Later on, Connie Willis, Douglas Adams, and Neil Gaiman have been her big influences.
“Heaven” is the first novel in the “Afterlife” series which was released in the year 2006. Is it possible that Heaven may not be all it is made out to be? A pair of friends, named Daniel and Kate, die and find that Heaven leaves them wanting for something different. They go off, with their passport to go searching for different afterlifes, gods and heroes. On their adventures, Daniel and Kate see that this is a journey taken not on a whim, but might just be prophesied or planned out.
Fans of the novel enjoy the main thought of the book, which is: what if you finally got to Heaven and it was not at all as great as you hoped? Lafferty is able to make great use of such a superb premise in this. Some readers felt, after putting the books off for a long time, that they are glad they finally started getting into the books. They quickly got hooked to the story telling and characters.
“Hell” is the second novel in the “Afterlife” series which was released in the year 2007. Kate and Daniel have reunited with each other, but have to go back to their duties, as they go on adventures through the afterlife. They are the only ones who can rescue some poor stolen souls that suffer in Hell without cause. Kate has her corporeal body back, but still has her memories of being a pure soul energy, after the divine recently touched her.
Daniel possesses the magic of an ancient god and a death goddess’ sword, and a grudge he has against a deity that was able to trick him into losing all he had. They go looking for the lost souls, Daniel and Kate have to reconcile the fact with each other. The pair has to also see if the friendship they’ve got, as well as the cosmos, is able to handle all that they have gone through by this point.
Fans of the novel find that each time, the books take a different approach; this makes each adventure a fresh one. Some enjoyed the happy and bittersweet ending this one had, it even brought tears to the eyes of some. This was such an excellent novel and even better than the first one, but you still have to read book one in the series. Readers are excited to see where things go from here in future installments.
“Earth” is the third novel in the “Afterlife” series which was released in the year 2007. All the religions say that the new world begins after the old one has ended. So what happens now?
Kate and Daniel have just gotten a promotion, and they are tasked with the New Age of Earth. They are still new at their jobs, and have not gotten much training in it. The pair has many forces that work against them, and their friendship is on rocky ground as each attempt they make to work as one just makes things worse.
Fans of the novel like the parts where you get to see new and previously unexplored parts of Heaven, it is even a pretty big part of the story. The books get the reader thinking and it is still easy to follow along on how everything has gone for the characters. Some are glad all the books are out, as they do not have to wait until more stories come out from this series.
“Wasteland” is the fourth novel in the “Afterlife” series which was released in the year 2007. Daniel has just been exiled, and this new Earth is in some trouble at the moment. While trying to restore his friend Kate, there is a new world that is born from the Wasteland. The pair just have to figure out how to make their own way through this world. The issue that is the besieged Earth and Heaven never go far from their brains during the times they go exploring this weird and new world.
Some found Lafferty to be quite funny, and it is clear she is obsessed with the afterlife and all the mythos with it. She does a great job of creating some likable characters. This author has gotten stronger with each story, and readers cannot wait to see how things are all tied up in the final story. She has been able to take this story in some surprising and remarkable directions.
