Nancy Holder is an American published author of fictional novels. Her full name is Nancy Lindsay Jones Holder. She also uses the pen names of Laurel Chandler and Nancy L. Jones.
Nancy was born on August 29, 1953. She is the author of numerous novels as well as several tie-in books based on the popular television show Buffy the Vampire Slayer. She also has written fictional novels based on different shows, including the Buffy spin-off Angel and the Superman based television show Smallville.
Nancy has won the Bram Stoker Award four times for her achievement in the field of horror writing. She first won for Best Short Story in 1991 for her story “Lady Madonna”. She won the award in 1993 for her story “I Hear the Mermaids Singing” and won again in 1994 for her story “Cafe Endless: Spring Rain”. Her novel Dead in the Water in 1994 won her the Best Novel.
The author grew up in Los Altos, California as well as Japan. Her father joined the navy and that is why they went to Japan. He had been a teacher at Stanford. She took a break from school when she was sixteen years old so that she could be a ballet dancer in Cologne, Germany. The family moved to Frankfurt Am Main from Cologne. She came back to the United States and got back into school, graduating from the University of California at San Diego summa cum laude with a degree in communications. She sometimes teaches classes on writing and Buffy the Vampire Slayer at the University of California at San Diego. It was not that long after that that she began writing and her first sold story was a romance novel for young adults with the title Teach Me to Love.
She has helped with the design of Dungeon Master, a video game that was developed and sold by her husband’s company FTL Games.
She resides in the city of San Diego. She is married to her husband, Wayne. Together they share a daughter named Belle. Together with Belle, they have started writing and publishing short stories together.
Holder also gave the original story concept to Big Damn Hero by James Lovegrove, a Firefly novel that came out in 2018. Her writing has been on many best seller lists and on USA Today, LA Times, the New York Times, LOCUS, and more. She has not only received the Bram Stoker Award but she has received recognition from the American Reading Association, the American Library Association, the New York Public Library, and the Romantic Times. She has also written books set in the universes of Hellboy and Saving Grace. She has also sold about 200 short stories and essays on popular culture and writing.
Holder has an anthology named Outsiders that was co-edited with Nancy Kilpatrick. The story was nominated in 2005 for a Bram Stoker Award.
Holder teaches the Stonecast MFA in Creative Writing Program through the University of Southern Maine. She has taught at UCSD and has also been part of the Clarion Board of Directors. She loves spending time with her family, their two Corgis, and their two cats. She also loves taking Belle to Girl Scouts and training their dogs together.
Holder has written several series and stand-alone novels. Her series include Gambler’s Star, the Wicked series co-authored along with Debbie Viguié, the Gifted series, the Possessions series, the Saving Grace series, the Crusade series with Debbie Viguié (about vampires), the Wolfs Springs Chronicles with Debbie Viguié, and the Beauty & the Beast series.
