A Canadian horror writer, the author Nancy Kilpatrick is one that has been making her mark for a number of years now, having developed her craft and gift for building suspense and fear for quite some time, drawing her readers in, and creating a foreboding sense of terror that keeps readers on the edges of their seats. She does this in a manner that is completely idiosyncratic to her too, creating a style that is entirely her own, whilst also staying true to and respecting the roots of the genre. This is done with both wit and intelligence, whilst also not forgetting to scare the reader, something which she manages thanks to her unpredictable nature, leaving the reader only guessing as to what could possibly come next. Her characters are also extremely well written too, as they really bring the story to life, as she really understands the concept of relating her readers to the action in order to create chills. Creating a sense of empathy with her leading protagonists, she allows the reader to form a connection with her characters, something which is massively beneficial for her style of story-telling, as she leaves them feeling frightened.
Not only that, but she also manages to get her message across too, as she always has something to say, using brevity to get her ideas across in the most direct manner possible. She also uses elements of erotica in many of her stories and series too, something which really manages to take her work up to another level for her many readers worldwide. Drawing upon a variety of different ideas and concepts, she really allows her readers to feel a part of the action too, something which also helps to create a sense of dread in her audience. This goes some way towards explaining how she has come to be such a worldwide sensation, with both the critic and the general public alike singing her many praises. Winning many awards too, she has also gained the ‘Arthur Ellis Award’ for best short story, along with her being finalist for the ‘Bram Stoker Aurora Award’ on multiple occasions too. Going under the name of Amarantha Knight too, she has worked at building her brand on a global scale, with readers from all backgrounds discovering something within her work. With her many successful series and franchises too, this is something that’s expected to continue on into the foreseeable future for some time to come.
Early and Personal Life
Growing up in Canada, the future author to be Nancy Kilpatrick would focus upon her love and passion for writing from a very early age. This would progress throughout the years, as she would continue to nurture this love of her craft as time went on, leading to her becoming one of the biggest voices within the horror genre to date. Still writing and traveling the world on a regular basis, she enjoys visiting catacombs and tombs for new ideas and inspiration, as she writes from her home in Montreal with her calico cat Felix.
Writing Career
Bringing out her first full novel in 1994, she would make her debut with the title ‘Near Death’, which would also go on to be chronologically the second in the ‘Power of the Blood World’ series of novels. She would later go on to create the ‘Thrones of Blood’ series in 2017, with a whole range of books released prior to then as well, including a number of anthologies too. Prior to her first book, she would make a contribution to the anthology ‘The Year’s Best Horror Stories XX’ in 1992, something which would lead to her name becoming widely recognized. With a lot more planned in the years to come, she is continually maintaining her presence both online and off, as she doesn’t seem to be stopping any time soon.
Reborn
This would be the third title in the now much loved ‘Power of the Blood World’ series of novels, as it would carry on in much the same vein as the previous novels. Originally brought out in 1994, it would be released not long after the first, with it being published through the Mosaic Press publishing label to an already eagerly awaiting audience. With tales of terror and horror, this heads straight for the fear factor, as it conjures up an extremely terrifying vision of true horror for the reader.
Creating a fun and vivid portrait of vampires, this is one book and series that isn’t afraid to shy away from some of the darker aspects of the genre. The characters themselves are also extremely well drawn, something which presented something new for the genre as, up until then, they had typically been cardboard caricatures. Set in a dark unlit underworld too, it really manages to turn many of the conventions on their head, creating something entirely new and different in the process.
Looking at vampires in tombs, this heads into a dark and shadowy underworld, taking the reader on a journey into the darker recesses of the human psyche. Featuring stories of vampires that the audience find themselves relating to and even empathizing with, it takes a look at what lurks deep within the shadows. Avoiding the cliches of the genre, it creates a fully vivid portrait of these vampires lives, loves and losses, as it really brings them into the light. What will the reader find? Can they escape the terror that awaits them? Who will be reborn?
The Darker Passions: Frankenstein
Initially released through the ‘Crossroad Press and Macabre Ink Digital’ publishing outlet, this would mark the third title in ‘The Darker Passions’ series. Working as a stand-alone, it would follow on thematically from the others. Released on the 2nd of September, it was originally published in 2012.
Telling the traditional story of Doctor Frankenstein, this approaches the story from a more erotic angle, taking into account the rising passions of the scientist. Creating experiments that go against the very fabric of nature, he creates monstrosities that also look into the nature of both man and woman. This then incorporates a number of sexual aspects into it as well, as he finds out what lust and love are really all about. What will he discover? Can he keep his sanity intact? What will become of the darker passions and Frankenstein?
