Inescapable (2012)
Inescapable is the first installment in Road to Kingdom series written by American bestselling author Nancy Mehl. In this novel, Lizzie Engel dad was a hard man, harsh and loving to her daughter. He even became more stringent to her when his daughter, Lizzie got pregnant out of wedlock. Everyone in the compact Mennonite community judged her, and in response, she did what she felt was right, abandon her home and start a new one in Kansas City.
Five years down the line in Kansas City, her life is falling apart with claims of thefts as well as a stalker threatening her with letters. With no alternative, Lizzie returns home with her daughter with great apprehension. Would she and her daughter be accepted back into the community? When she arrives, she finds everyone kind and willing to get reestablished except for her father. While at home, she feels safe from the stalker and familiarizes herself with her old buddy, Noah Housler. When the stalker finally finds her, she realizes that she has nowhere left to seek refuge except her real Father.
The author, Nancy Mehl wove God’s unfailing love into Lizzie story in a way that it eventually opened her heart to be more forgiving and less judgmental. However, she still wonders if she is putting the community at risk by her stay in the Kingdom.
Lizzie’s character is uniquely crafted in a way that you will connect with her and even relate her to someone in real life. Some the secondary characters are vividly drawn into the story. For instance, Cora is a woman of her own. She does not worry much of what the elders think of her car and restaurant. On the other hand, Charity, Lizzie’s daughter is precocious and bold in asking challenging questions.
What you will also love in this series debut is that there are lots of lessons one can learn, the author emphasizes more on a strong relationship with God and there also great quotes as well. Secondly, the narrative is full of suspense that will leave you craving for more.
The themes of mercy, love, and forgiveness are showcased via the relationship between Lizzie, her best friend, her mother, her father and some of her old friends. It is a good inspiration for anyone who’s been broken and seeking peace, love, forgiveness and reconciliation.
Gathering Shadows (2014)
Wynter Evans is at the peak of her career working for as television reporter in St. Louis. However, no matter the fortune her future holds, it does not take away the pain of the disappearance of her beloved brother nine years ago.
When she comes across a picture of a boy who resembles her lost brother, she sets on a journey to track him down. Apparently, at her workplace, she reports that she is undertaking a research and sets out with one of the station photographers to the place where the photo was taken, a place known as the town of Sanctuary.
As soon as she arrives in Sanctuary, she meets the town’s mayor, Reuben King and together they soon begin to unravel the secrets that could shred the town apart and ultimately change Wynter forever. As soon as the truth regarding her family starts to surface, it is evidently clear that there is a person who will stop at nothing to ensure that the answers to whatever questions she has in mind are hidden forever- even if it means sending Wynter six feet on the ground.
Gathering Shadows is a great suspense built on an interesting premise. Despite Wynter success in her career, she is determined in finding her lost brother, after finding a photograph of a person resembling him. Here the author vividly brings in a new theme of HOPE. Despite her brother gone missing for nine years, Wynter still believes that he is alive and even goes ahead to risk her career and most importantly her life.
Unbreakable (2012)
Hope Kauffman is a gentle woman helping her father run Kingdom Quilts. Additionally, she has agreed to the marriage her father arranged her with Ebbie Miller.
On the other hand, Jonathan Wiese is the head of the move to reform, and he is steering changes in the kingdom despite the attempts by Hope and some residents to maintain the status quo. The people of Mennonite town believe in nonviolence means of solving conflicts. However, when the Kingdom is threatened Jonathan advocates for the town to arm itself with Ebbie is one of those demanding that the town stick to its traditions of nonviolence.
Soon, Hope finds herself questioning whatever she has been taught and caught in between two opposing sides. With tensions mounting and lives at stake, Hope is afraid that the kingdom can never survive as one piece.
The second installment in Road to Kingdom series is a great story. The primary focus, in this case, is Hope; a woman engaged but develops feelings for another man. What is unique regarding this book is that it features dual plots that are fast-paced and vividly detailed. The spiritual aspect of the story is well utilized and strong.
If you love books that provide a good narrative but also serve as food for your spirits as well as strengthen faith in God, then it is high time you added Nancy Mehl books to your bookshelf.
