Nancy Thayer was interested in writing about life of an ordinary women. Her first novel, Stepping, was a stepping stone towards her success.when she was going through her diaries, she discovered her own life story which could be written as novel. When she was twenty she ran away from her home to marry the psychology professor, she remembers the exciting and romantic moments of her life and decides to write a novel based on the narrative. she began writing the novel “Stepping” in 1978 about a woman with a lover, professor husband, two children and two step daughters. The story includes the struggle of a woman in house without any entertaining media like t.v, radio or a record player, her husband always celebrated for being a scholar. she invented characters to bring drama in her book to hide the themes of domestic difficulties but people were more likely about the domestic difficulty as they were true incidents which almost all the women could relate themselves in their own funny ways. The main character of the book stepping was Zelda who was similar to Nancy but she made her better, funnier, nicer and character of the novel stayed with her husband forever, But in real life she was about to be divorced and petrified about money. In one of the notes in her dairy she mentioned about her marriage and money with full of despair but she was happy that it was quit kind, may be she was happy reason being she did not break down in front of her kids and burst into tears. It was not easy for her to omit things which were the crucial part of her life but she had to do it for the sake of her novel, she had to undergo and re model her history and invent new things to add spice in the character. Finally after all the struggles her first novel “stepping” was published in January 1980 and she celebrated this moment with her friends jill and marry. Stepping got great response and got great review in New York Times news paper.

Nancy was always passionate about writing the stories of real women’s lives, she wanted to portray the images of women’s struggle through mans domination. she borrowed bits and pieces of stories from her life and as well as from her children’s life too. By the time her first novel Stepping was being published she had completed half of her second novel. Three women’s at the waters edge, the second book of Nancy Thayer, it shows the stages of a women’s life at three different age interval which intersect over single period of time in the story. The story has three main characters one is Margaret, daisy, dale. Margaret was at her fifty, she was trying to escape from the responsibilities of taking care of other people, nancy felt she was more like Margaret in her real life, exhausted by the responsibility of her two children. Daisy was a character who would joy in her children even though she was at her mid thirty, being left by her husband for another women with two kids and one more in her belly. Dale, the third character of the novel was a teacher in a small town who was full of life, she had fallen in intensive love but she was terrified because her sister’s husband was leaving her and moving away in addition to that Dale’s mother leaving her father. Dale’s faith in love gradually started to fade away. This book was published in 1981, Nancy Thayer celebrated her success of her novels by drinking champagne with her friends and the pub party was organised by Doubleday for which she took Dina along with her. Nancy received lot of letters regarding the concern of daisy’s extreme consumption of alcohol. Nancy felt awful about that because although the she had not even tasted brandy, but claims to have drank a lot of champagne.

Along the road, her novel “Spirit Lost” had made a debut in 1997 staring James avery, Deacon Dawson, Yvonne and few others under the direction of Neema Barnett. The narrative of the movie is spirit of the women who used to be a lover of ship captain haunts the young couple and seduces by showing up in the mirror. When writing this novel Nancy was dealing with loneliness and stress because of new life and entirely new environment. Nancy was haunted and that emotion became the base of the novel. After Spirit Lost, she wrote eighteen more successful novels. She had written around twenty three books for her readers and she is the type of person who always stores the gifts and cards given by her readers.
