Neil Richards is a published author.
Richards has had an accomplished career working in television and film as a writer and a producer. He has written a variety of scripts and earned a number of Bafta nominations. Richards has composed stories and scripts for video games that include Starship Titanic, which was written along with famed science fiction author Douglas Adams, and several more. He also stays busy by consulting with companies about digital storytelling.
Neil met Matt Costello in the nineties. Born in 1948, the science fiction writer and Richards eventually formed a writing partnership. Costello is based in New York City and together they have composed a number of hours of good television. Costello also writes scripts and designs games. His novel Beneath Still Waters was adapted into a 2005 movie.
When it comes to crime fiction, the two tried their hand at it in novel form with their Cherringham series. They agree that an Englishman and an American collaborating on stories about crime with heroes that are English as well as American seems an idea that was long overdue for them.
Neil Richards is the co-creator and the author of the Cherringham fictional series. It is written along with author Matthew Costello. The first novel in the series was released for readers to enjoy in 2013. The debut story was titled Murder on Thames. The sequel came out shortly after and is titled Mystery at the Manor. There are well over two dozen novels in the series, so check it out if you are looking for a series to read with plenty of stories to offer! The 33rd book in the series came out in 2019 and is titled Cliffhanger.
Murder on Thames is the first book in the Cherringham series. If you are looking for an intriguing murder mystery story to check out, then this is the novel for you!
The story starts out in Cherringham, which is known for being a peaceful and a quiet town located in the Cotswolds. It is a place that is known for its slow way of life, and even time itself seems to move in a slower way there. The people that live there do not experience crime frequently. Nothing happens that is outside of the ordinary, at least most of the time.
That all changes when a body is found one morning. It is a woman and she was found dead, still located in the local river. It is determined that the victim is Sammi Jackson. Why she was in the water and whether there was foul play involved is yet to be seen.
Meanwhile, a new face is coming into town. Sarah Edwards has moved here with her children and brought the three of them to Cherringham after her marriage totally and utterly fell apart. It seemed the right thing to do, but the last thing that you want to hear when you’re moving to a new place is that someone has just been found dead there under suspicious circumstances.
This was supposed to be a safe place to start a new life with her kids. Now Cherringham is seeming to be more sinister than she would have hoped for. Adding to her sense of distress is the fact that she knew the dead woman. Sammi had been one of Sarah’s friends before both of them decided to move on to live in London.
They haven’t been in close touch for some time now, but Sarah cannot help but think that this death could have involved someone else with a motive to kill. She also has a personal tie to the case, which doesn’t help her become less interested or invested. However, working doing web design and trying to get her kids fed and off to school does not leave time to work on solving cases independently.
She isn’t even sure what she would be able to accomplish, honestly, and her children and her busy schedule demand her time. Little does she know about Jack Brennan’s existence in town, but she’s about to find out!
Jack was a homicide detective with the NYPD but has since retired. He moved to Cherringham in the hopes that he would finally be able to have the type of quiet life he has been after all this time. Even though it is exactly the type of peace that he has been after, Jack realizes quickly that the slower way of living may not be for him after all.
When Sarah requests his help to look into the death of her friend, he has some doubts about it. However, retirement isn’t exactly the perfect fit that he thought it would be. He needs some action and so agrees to help her look into things. However, the case quickly appears to be more complex than they would have thought.
There are many things about the victim’s life that end up coming out as a result of their search. Her father’s problem with alcohol comes up, as well as an ex-boyfriend with a history of violence. It seems that there are plenty of secrets out there, and Jack and Sarah are determined to find out what really happened.
The two of them are going to use all that they have got to figure out this case. Will their efforts be enough, or is someone on their tail trying to make sure that no one finds out who did this? Pick up the first book in this series to find out!
Mystery at the Manor is the second book in the Cherringham series. If you love mysteries and murder combined into one compelling plot, pick up this engaging sequel!
Mogdon Manor is owned by the elderly Victor Hamblyn. When he dies in a fire, it looks like an accident to the untrained eye. However, there are at least two people that have their doubts.
Sarah is suspicious of the fire, as is Jack. The three children of the victim are all in middle age. The potential heirs all live in Cherringham as well. They’re also potential killers. Could one have them done it? Read this book to find out and check out the rest of the books in this awesome series from Costello and Richards!

I love both Cherringham and Mydworth! Please keep them coming!!!
Dear Neil & Matt as well as Neil Dudgeon,
Thanks for The Cherringham series. As a member of a family with many in the NYPD and a Forgien mystery fan the series been perfect relief for the stress over the past few years. Date I ask for more….please.
The Cheringham audiobooks are read by Neil Dudgeon and are very well done. Perfect thing to listen to when cleaning, sewing, cooking etc. Strong characters and a vivid picture of the community and surroundings. An American driving on the ‘wrong side of the road’ in a Spitfire conjures some lovely images.
